It was an afternoon of fun and games at Charles F. Patton Middle School as the school’s PTO held the annual Spring Carnival on May 4.

The event has been a regular affair for more than 30 years, according to Principal Bruce Vosburgh. Vosburgh has been at Patton since 1976 and recalls being in a dunk tank during the carnival his first few years.

Ann Bell, of the PTO, said the carnival is the biggest fund-raiser the Patton PTO has during the course of the year. In 2011, the carnival saw a net profit of more than $11,000 and Bell said she hopes this year would do at least as well.

“All of the profits that we make from the carnival go to purchase new technology, special projects and teacher grants for the following year,” Bell said.

She added that the event is for the entire community, with kids and parents attending from all of the schools in the Unionville-Chadds Ford district. There were promotions done at all the elementary schools.

“We had contests with the fifth-graders at the elementary schools to bring them over so they know what’s coming [when they get to middle school],” Bell added. “It’s a great day to have some good old fashioned fun.”

There were 13 different vendors on hand with standard carnival games, crafts and food. Some of booths were from outside vendors, but others were in-house, PTO-run booths, Bell said.

There was also an area for younger kids, 8 years and below.

“We’re trying to make it fun for the kids for the day,” Bell said.
