Chadds Ford is getting a playground.

A public playground is one step closer to becoming a reality in Chadds Ford Township. Supervisors awarded a $187,913 contract to the playground company Kompan for equipment and installation during their March 3 meeting.

The vote for approval came after a 10-minute presentation by resident Michael Pessagno of the Open Space Committee. According to the presentation, the project's total cost is $276,600, but the township qualified for a matching DCNR Grant of $138,300.

The planned design is called the Kompan Moments Series, and the contract covers equipment, materials, and installation. Equipment includes a wheelchair piece and two main pieces separating youngsters by age group. There would be one section for kids 2-5 years of age and another for those 5-12 years.

Not included in the company's estimate are supporting engineering services, a gazebo or pavilion installation, or other secondary and miscellaneous items.

"It's not everything, but it's the majority," Pessagno said.

In response to a question from Supervisor Noelle Barbone, Pessagno said there would be no swings. Township Manager Maryann Furlong interjected that swings need a larger "fall area, and we really don't have enough area to do that."

Supervisors' Vice-Chair Samantha Reiner added that while the township did get a grant, it wasn't enough to cover everything it wanted to include. However, "It's a great thing, and I think as you see it used, and there's standing room only or waiting room only, we're going to get contributions, I'm sure, in the future."

The playground will be located away from Route 1 behind Turner's Mill, the township's municipal building. It will align with the township's character and be ADA compliant.

Pessagno said construction could start in August and added that there would be minimal maintenance and lifetime costs.
