Ruth M. Brown of Kennett Square

Ruth
M. Brown, 86, a lifelong resident of Kennett Square, died Tuesday, May 11 at
Chester County Hospital in West Chester.

Born
in Kennett Square, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Ida Webster
Brown.

She
was a pillar of Bethel AME Church in Kennett Square, where she was a member
since 1937.

She
was honored as Citizen of the Year by the Southern Chester County Chamber of
Commerce in 1990. She dedicated her life to helping others and volunteered at
Coatesville Veterans Hospital for 50 years.

A
first-grade teacher, Miss Brown taught at Avon Grove Elementary School for 41
years, where she influenced many generations of students.

She
was preceded in death by three siblings; Vivian, her eldest sister, Walker
Brown, Sr. (Buster) and Elizabeth (Aunt Betty), who was also her best friend.

Ruth
is survived by niece Ida Elizabeth Williams (Betty Lou) and her husband George
of Elkridge, Md, nephew James Walker Brown Jr. and his wife Betty Lou of
Kennett, her devoted sister–in-law Margaret Brown of West Chester, a special
cousin, Theresa Hart, who used to visit from Philadelphia often during her
youth and has remained a lifelong friend, and by many nieces, nephews, and
friends.

Her
funeral service will be held at Bethel AME Church, 300 E. Linden Street,
Kennett Square on Saturday, May 15, at 10 a.m. Family and friends are invited
to visit with the family from 8:30 – 10 a.m. before the service. Interment will
be in Union Hill Cemetery, Kennett Square.

in Miss Brown’s memory may be made to Bethel AME Church at the aforementioned
address.
