Madeleine Wing Adler Theatre, West Chester University
The Kennett Symphony of Chester County begins its 2013 – 2014 Conductor Search Season with Opening Night Spectacular, under the direction of Conductor Candidate Michael Hall, featuring pianist Igor Resnianski. Entering its 73rd season, a pre-concert chat with Conductor Candidate Hall will be presented at 7:00 pm followed by the concert at 8:00 pm. Both will be held at West Chester University’s Madeleine Wing Adler Theatre on Saturday, September 21, 2013.
Beginning the program is Kodály’s Intermezzo from Háry János Suite, followed by Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor featuring Igor Resnianski on piano. Finishing the program is Dvořák’s grand Symphony No. 9 in E minor From the New World.
The 19th century was an era of strong nationalist movements. Each composer in this concert was inspired by music from their native countries. Kodály’s suite was inspired by the folk music of Hungary, Grieg’s concerto is linked to his Norwegian roots, and Dvořák’s symphony reflects both the folk influences of his Czech culture and the sounds and characteristics of Native American melodies and plantation songs.
Hailed as having “talent to burn” by the Winnipeg Free Press, Michael Hall’s career includes guest appearances with some of the finest orchestras in North America, including the Houston Symphony, Toronto Symphony and Vancouver Symphony, among others. In Central America, Hall has worked with the Orquesta Sinfionica Nacional de Costa Rica. He has a special relationship with the Tucson Symphony, where he has been a frequent guest conductor over the past eight seasons. Hall recently concluded his 5th successful season as Music Director of the Southwest Florida Symphony. His drive for artistic excellence, innovative thematic programming, and collaborations with celebrated guest artists resulted in unprecedented artistic growth, audience praise, and enthusiastic reviews. Before being appointed Music Director of the Southwest Florida Symphony, Hall held the position of Associate Conductor with the Pacific Symphony in California where he developed innovative Family Concerts based on his own original scripts. Hall’s success in California led to his initial three year position being extended to an unprecedented six year tenure. Hall holds a Master’s degree in conducting from the University of Michigan, studying with renowned conducting pedagogue Gustav Meier, and a DipRAM from the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he worked with Sir Colin Davis. While studying in England, Hall also held the position of Assistant conductor of the Havant Symphony Orchestra in the UK. Hall was a finalist in the 2003 International Conducting Competition in Besançon France, and was awarded Third Prize in the 2004 Cadaques Orchestra International Conducting Competition in Spain.
A Steinway artist, Igor Resnianski is a prize winner of many international piano competitions including the First Prize of the New Orleans International Piano Competition, the Bronze Medal of the International World Piano Competition, Cincinnati, Ohio, the Bronze Medal of the Nena Wideman International Piano Competition, Shreveport, Louisiana, and the Second Prize of the All Russian Piano Competition Sodrujestvo. He has performed with numerous orchestras including Forth Worth Symphony, New Orleans Symphony and Acadiana Symphony.
