A free lecture, part of KURC's series titled "Enslaved, Freedom Seeking, and Free: 19th-Century African American Life in the Mid-Atlantic Region"

Scholar Bruce Mowday will present a talk on Kennett Square Quaker families who were at the forefront of opposing slavery. His new book, J. Howard Wert’s Gettysburg, depicts the largest private collection of artifacts from Gettysburg. Wert guided runaway slaves to safety and was friends with noted antislavery congressman Thaddeus Stevens. A chapter of the book is devoted to Gettysburg abolitionists and includes a walking stick from the last trip on the Adams County Underground Railroad, an antislavery codebook, a first edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and items from author Harriet Beecher Stowe.  Book signing to follow talk.
