First Sunday for Families: The Art of Stories @ Brandywine River Museum of Art

Celebrate the art of stories through art, music and dance on this First Sunday for Families at Brandywine River Museum of Art. Discover classic tales in N. C. Wyeth: New Perspectives and express your personal vision under the direction of teaching artists at the illustration station. Be inspired by award-winning artist and children’s book illustrator Raúl Colón and Imagine, his newest book about a young boy whose adventures in an art museum spill out into the streets of the city. Explore diaspora West African dance, drum, song and storytelling traditions from the Mali Empire and get moving on an interactive Passport Journey featuring Jeannine Osayande & Dunya Performing Arts Company. First Sundays for Families presents free, hands-on workshops designed to engage visitors of all ages in creative art activities and performances. No registration necessary.

This program is part of The Art of Stories presented by PNC Arts Alive—a multidisciplinary celebration of the narrative arts and the ways in which stories are crafted, saved and shared including discussions, performances and opportunities for artistic self-expression.

Don't miss this rare opportunity to work with Annie Guilfoyle, an award-winning garden designer from London, England. In this information-filled, two-day workshop, Annie introduces students to the design process and problem-solving techniques, leading to a basic conceptual layout for your garden. Through discussion, hands-on designing, and individual direction, learn how to assess your site, where to find inspiration, and how to turn your dreams into a workable garden plan. The program also includes an introduction to making wise plant selections, using the gardens at Mt. Cuba for inspiration. Leave with a plan in progress from which to continue your design concepts. This clinic is suited to homeowners who want to redesign their garden, people working in the garden industry, and landscape designers. Lunch is included in the registration fee. This is a two-day workshop.

Looking for something fun and educational to do with the kids while they're out of school for the summer? During this year's Terrific Tuesdays we begin with the pre-historic era, inspired by some fun fossils recently “discovered” on our patio, then zoom forward to 1600.  From that point, we advance 50 years each week, exploring some of the customs, discoveries, and otherwise momentous moments along the way.

Special guests will be on hand to highlight skills and trades from the past and present.

Each week will feature a different time period and a different special guest:

July 2: Pre-History

July 9: 1600-1650

July 16: 1650-1700

July 23: 1700-1750

July 30: 1750-1800

August 6: 1800-1850

August 13: 1850-1900

August 20: 1900-1950

August 27: 1950-2000

Members and children under 2 are free. Nonmembers are $5 per child; $5 per one adult accompanying a paying child; additional adults are $15.

Join Winterthur Flower Coordinator Heidi Militana for this series of hands-on workshops to learn the latest trends in locally sourced cut flowers, to use Winterthur as inspiration for your floral designs, and to learn design tips from the pros. Each session, participants will evaluate the cut-flower gardens, visit select places on the estate, and leave with either a  flower design or seeds/plugs. Entire series of 6 workshops: $300 per member; $350 per nonmember; or individual workshops: $60 per Member; $70 per nonmember. CHESS is a Tony Award nominated musical with music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of the pop group ABBA, lyrics by Tim Rice, and a book by Richard Nelson based on an idea by Rice. The story involves a politically driven, Cold War era chess tournament between two grandmasters from America and the USSR and their fight over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other. Just as relevant today as it was thirty years ago, CHESS blends the raw emotion of modern opera with the edginess of synth-pop and rock n’ roll.

Featuring a cast and production team from the Greater Philadelphia Area, this fully staged production will be accompanied by The Chesco Pops under the baton of Maestro Joseph Gehring. Bravo Theatre Company’s Artistic Director, Daniel K. Williams will stage direct. Joining him as music director is Diane Gray with additional music direction by Susan Guyer and choreography by Emily Fishman.

Chester County Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone and Terence Farrell announce the location of the next “Conversations with the Commissioners” evening, part of a series of informal open-forum gatherings held throughout Chester County during the year.  Moving from the usual “coffee and conversation” theme, the Commissioners are offering “ice cream and conversation” during August.

The next “Conversations with the Commissioners” evening is Monday, August 12, 2019 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Chester Springs Creamery, 521 E. Uwchlan Avenue, Chester Springs, PA.

“The Commissioners’ Conversation evenings follow previous county government information events including ‘On the Road’ Commissioners’ Meetings and the Chester County School of Government series,” said Becky Brain, County Communications Coordinator.  “The events give Chester County residents the opportunity to meet with all three County Commissioners to ask questions about county government programs and services that relate to everything from health, safety, open space and population growth to jobs, housing and the County’s many parks and trails.”

Field to Fork Dinner @ Hill Girt Farm

Enjoy a special farm-to-table dinner prepared by Chef Mike Kline of the Brandywine River Museum of Art’s Millstone Café using vegetables grown by SIW Vegetables. Hosted by H.G. Haskell, III, this dinner will take place in a historic barn on Hill Girt Farm, which is one of the first properties placed under conservation easement by the Brandywine Conservancy—permanently protecting the land from development. Directions to the location are included in the acknowledgment email of your purchase. Casual dress and comfortable footwear are suggested for this intimate evening. Participants are welcomed to bring their own alcoholic beverages to enjoy during their meal.

About the Chef: Chef Mike Kline is the Executive Chef of the Millstone Café at the Brandywine River Museum of Art. He specializes in creating delicious dishes with a focus on fresh, locally sourced and seasonally inspired ingredients. Growing up near a mushroom farm in Kennett Square, Chef Kline started his career at the DK Diner and Teca Restaurant in West Chester, working his way up in the ranks. This journey brought him to Kennett Square’s Sovana Bistro, and then later Blanch & Shock Catering. Prior to joining the Brandywine as Executive Chef, Kline worked for two years as the Millstone Café’s sous chef and Blanch & Shock catering chef.

Get access to Kuerner Farm, a National Historic Landmark, where artist Andrew Wyeth found intriguing subjects for hundreds of tempera paintings, watercolors and drawings for more than 70 years. Artists working in all media are invited to explore the property where they can sketch, paint or photograph. Gain insight into Wyeth’s creative process on an optional guided tour. Participants will meet at the Brandywine River Museum of Art parking lot at 4:15 p.m. before driving their own vehicles to the farm. Water and bathrooms are available at the site. Participants are responsible for providing all art materials.

YOUNG COMPOSERS WORKSHOP PERFORMANCE  AT BRANDYWINE RIVER MUSEUM OF ART

Led by local pianist and composer Jennifer Nicole Campbell, four student composers will be premiering their musical compositions inspired by specific visual works at the Museum. Throughout the summer, each student has worked to fuse together their once-abstract ideas into the reality of a new piece of music. Jennifer Nicole Campbell has performed at halls including Lincoln Center, the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, the Musikhauset Aarhus in Denmark, and the Explorer’s Club in New York. She graduated from the prestigious Peabody Conservatory of Music at Johns Hopkins University where she earned her Bachelor’s and Master Degrees in Piano Performance and Composition. An avid composer, Ms. Campbell’s music has been performed by numerous prominent artists, and she also composes numerous works for the Academy of International Ballet, with whom she has served as Composer In Residence since 2017. Come to the Brandywine River Museum of Art to unwind, mingle and make art! Designed for adults who want to awaken their inner artists, this program will include inspiration from the exhibition N. C. Wyeth: New Perspectives, and will feature a hands-on opportunity to paint with alcohol inks. Participants will be guided in applying inks to paper and ceramic tiles, and each person will take home a set of four ceramic tiles that may be used as coasters or for display. No experience necessary. Program fee includes art materials and light refreshments. BYOB!
