Imagine bypassing commuter traffic daily with the ease of a bird in flight, or “as the crow flies.” Think of time saved and no aggravation while en route to work or anywhere, even great distances.
All of this seems futuristic, but, West Chester’s American Helicopter Museum and Education Center (AHMEC) knows that the future is now as its Board of Directors bestows its ninth annual Achievement Award on Germany’s Lilium GmbH. The coveted trophy recognizes the Lilium Jet and its successful maiden flight in April 2017, and will be awarded at AHMEC’s Gala fundraiser on Saturday, April 21.

"We are pleased to present the 2018 AHMEC Achievement Award to Lilium for its successful flight testing of an all-electric jet capable of vertical take-off and landing and cruise speeds up to 300 km/hr,” said Marc Sheffler, AHMEC’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Thirty-six electric jet engines mounted to its wings via 12 moveable flaps power the lightweight, two-seater Lilium Jet, which requires only a small open space or landing pad atop a building to take off and land.
“The innovative design already demonstrated transition from hover to forward flight, as well as complex maneuvers,” continued Sheffler. “The technologies that this prototype aircraft is maturing have the potential to result in an aircraft that can fly from London to Paris in under an hour with low noise and zero emissions."
This year’s Gala’s theme is “Copters in the Caribbean” featuring entertainment from Captain Jack Sparrow ("Pirates of the Caribbean") impersonator, Steven Dapcevich. It begins at 5 p.m. with cocktails, followed by dinner from the Desmond Hotel, dancing, music and a raffle with items like restaurant gift certificates and a basket of various wines.
Contact AHMEC at 610-436-9600 or see the website at www.americanhelicopter.museum for more information.

An Evening of Promise will feature wine tasting and hors d’oeuvre pairings, silent auction items for all ages, including: a day of sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, spa and restaurant packages, sporting event tickets, summer camp experiences, one-of-a-kind treasures by local artists and much, much more. Tickets are $65 per person or two for $125, and sponsorship packages are still available.
“Family Promise is funded primarily by donations from local individuals, businesses and foundations,” said Family Promise executive director Susan Minarchi. “This is our main fundraiser of the year and we hope to raise $30,000 to help us provide families with crucial basic necessities for a fresh start.” “Many families arrive with nothing and need necessities from toothbrushes to towels, coats, and clothing for school, work and interviews,” she added.

Residents in the Glen Mills community and surrounding areas will have the opportunity to receive free dental services at Dental Care of Concordville on Thursday, April 26.
Dr. Fairy Baxi, Dr. Murphy Ziesel and team at Dental Care of Concordville will be improving the oral health of the community as part of Free Dentistry Day, a day dedicated to providing free dental care to the growing number of Americans without dental insurance. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 108 million Americans are living without dental insurance.
“We understand that many people in our community and across the nation haven’t been to the dentist for a long period of time. Some don’t understand the importance of dental health, but more often than not, they don’t have the financial means,” said Dr. Baxi. “This event is a great opportunity for us to share our time and resources with those less fortunate and give back to the community.”
There is increasing evidence that links oral health to overall health and well-being. The signs and symptoms of over 100 medical conditions, including diabetes, HIV/AIDS, Lou Gehrig’s disease and oral cancer may first be detected through traditional oral examinations.
“Dental health is a vital part of a person’s overall health,” said Dr. Ziesel. “Through this event, we hope to educate patients on the importance of dental health and encourage them to adopt an ongoing oral care regimen.”
During Free Dentistry Day, a choice of one free cleaning, filling or extraction will be provided per patient on Thursday, April 26, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at 1751 Wilmington Pike, Suite F-2 in Glen Mills. Patients will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, please call 484-800-8444 or visit www.FreeDentistryDay.org.
“It’s very gratifying to see the impact that events like Free Dentistry Day can have on the life of a person. At the same time we’re changing their life, they’re changing ours,” said Dr. Baxi.
About Dental Care of Concordville
