Popcorn & Pictures: The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

Thursday, December 17 | 4:30 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. | Film begins at 5:30 p.m.

Popcorn & Pictures is a new family film series that connects popular movies with the Museum's collection and special exhibitions. This December, the Museum will show the classic Jim Henson film The Muppets Christmas Carol. The evening includes a take-home art activity and free popcorn. Additional food and beverages are available for purchase in the Thronson Café. Recommended for ages 8+. Free for Members, $3 Non-Members. 85 minutes.

To celebrate the release of the new Star Wars movie, Kennett Public Library is hosting Force Fridays on Dec. 4, 11 and 18 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Children ages 5 and older are invited to participate in special Star Wars-related activities. On Dec. 4, the library will have arts and crafts stations to make Star Wars swag. Knowledgeable about Star Wars, you are? Prove it, you will, at the Trivia Challenge on Dec. 11. And on Dec. 18 the library will host a Lego Party. Star Wars plus Legos …. need we say more? All Force Friday events are free, however pre-registration is recommended. The "Artisan Gift Shop" at The Oxford Art Alliance has restocked their gallery of local artisanal wares, including wood carved utensils and benches, hand-made soaps, cards, knitted and woven scarves and much more. Their annual Artisan Shop has been so successful that they had to bring in more items, so if you have already checked it out, perhaps you should swing by again for last minute holiday purchases.

Celebrate the holiday season at the Kennett Public Library’s Solstice Art and Craft Fair on Saturday, Dec. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The library will transform into a cheerful holiday market with local artisans and craftspeople selling their treasures, a cookie exchange, and arts and crafts projects for all ages. The library will also be displaying art from the Kids Across the World program sponsored by Disney and the American Library Association, and there will be a 3-D printer demonstration. Bog Turtle Brewery will release its first offering at the SawMill Grill, 306 Market St., in Oxford on Monday, Dec. 21, at 5 p.m. The brew, called Devil’s Nine Ball, is a hoppy, citrusy American pale that has been years in the making, according to press release from Oxford Mainstreet.

Even without leaves, many trees and shrubs are still recognizable at this time of year. Learn the distinguishing characteristics for identifying more than 20 native species in the dormant season. Study branching patterns, growth habits, bark, and persistent fruits; closely examine bud and branch details; and learn to use identification tools called dichotomous keys. Dress for winter conditions because the class will be held outdoors and in the lab.

Eileen Boyle is the Director of Education and Research at Mt. Cuba Center. She loves teaching, especially about plants and their relationships with birds and butterflies. Previously she was the Director of Horticulture at the Philadelphia Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden.

Duncan Himmelman is the Education Manager at Mt. Cuba Center. He has an undergraduate degree in botany and advanced degrees in ornamental horticulture; has taught at colleges in Canada and the US; and has practiced horticulture for more than 30 years.

FREE Hadley Fund Programs Feature Magpie Music
Sword of the Spirit
Concert and One-Act Play

The Hadley Fund is pleased to present Magpie Music, Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner, performing a concert and one-act play, Sword of the Spirit.

The music from their concert on Saturday, January 16th at 7pm is inspired by the lives of abolitionists, Mary and John Brown.

The one-act play on Sunday, January 17th at 2pm is based upon the letters between Mary and John.

Both performances will take place at Kennett Friends Meeting, 125 West Sickle Street, in Kennett Square.

John Brown has spent the last forty days of his life in a jail cell. During this time he has received many visitors, given interviews and composed over one hundred letters to acquaintances, friends and members of his family, including his wife, Mary. At rise, Brown addresses the audience in the last “interview” he has agreed to give. He tells them his story, expounding on his life, his beliefs and what he considers his God-given mission to destroy the evil of slavery.

From another part of the stage Mary writes to him from Lucretia Mott’s home, where she has stopped on her journey to see him one last time. She also addresses the audience directly, telling the story of her life with John to “Mrs. Mott.” Sword of the Spirit is a singular opportunity for the audience to witness this story of the famed radical abolitionist, before he is taken to the gallows.

The artists will engage the audience in a discussion immediately following the play.

The MLK CommUNITY of Greater Kennett announces plans for the 15^th Annual MLK Jr. CommUNITY Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 18, 2016. The breakfast is an opportunity to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s legacy of service and be inspired to live out his dream in our own lives and community and throughout the world. This year’s program includes inspirational readings, music led by Leon Spencer and the CommUNITY Choir, a display of relevant books, and keynote speaker, Elder Jerry F. Poe, on the theme “We Hold These Truths”. Additional components of the day in honor of Dr. King include a collection for the local food cupboards and the Day of Sharing community service projects.
