Leslie B. Holland of Avondale

Leslie B. Holland, 84, of Avondale, died July 16, at the Christiana
Care Hospital, Newark.

He was the beloved husband of Katherine (nee
Grantham) and wonderful father of Caroline H. Osofsky. He was born in the
American Hospital in Nuilly, a suburb of Paris and attended school in Villars
sur Ollon, Switzerland. In 1940 he boarded the last refugee ship, the U.S.S Washington,
out of Bordeau for Lisbon where other refugees fleeing Hitler's forces
were waiting. As it sailed to England for more refugees, the Washington
experienced a near miss as a German U-boat shot a torpedo across its bow and halted
their passage. The courageous captain negotiated their release. He attended
Germantown Friends School and later was trained with the Maritime School Ship
in Philadelphia. He was a World War II veteran having served with the
military police at Los Almos, New Mexico and served in Korea. He was
known for his alpine skiing ability and organized U.S., European and South American
ski trips for chartered groups.

He managed the Philadelphia Travel Agency from 1955 to 1958,
and than joined Raymond and Whitcomb Travel Agency. Later he partnered in a
courier business servicing European clients until he retired in 1989.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine (nee) Grantham,
Daughter, Caroline Holland Osofsky, son in law, Matthew Osofsky, grandchildren,
