William “Bill” J. Delany of Chadds Ford

William “Bill” J. Delany, 70, of Chadds Ford, died Wednesday, April 1. He was born in Philadelphia to William and Mary (nee Fleming) Delany.

Bill grew up in Southwest Philadelphia and graduated from West Catholic High School in 1962. He spent many years enjoying his membership and presidency of the Southwest St. Patrick’s Club. Bill was a longtime resident of Delaware County, and lived for several years in Vienna,Va.

Bill was very proud of his 35-year career at The Boeing Co. He began in an entry-level computer support position in 1964. He attended school at night while supporting a family of five and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from WidenerUniversityin 1979. Bill worked his way into management at Boeing and held a number of executive level positions, primarily supporting Boeing Helicopter Division’s production of the CH-47 Chinook Helicopter. Bill was also integrally involved in the development of the V-22 Osprey aircraft, serving from 1995 through 1997 as deputy program manager and then program manager. Bill’s career at Boeing culminated as president of Boeing Information Systems and vice president of The Boeing Co. When his organization was sold to Science Applications International Corp. in 1999, Bill joined SAIC in Tyson’s Corner, Va. as senior vice president, where he worked until his retirement in 2002. Bill was intensely loyal to, and extremely proud of, the many people with whom he worked.

Upon retirement, in Bill’s words, “every day was Saturday.” He spent those many Saturdays with his children and grandchildren, hanging out with his family and friends, petsitting his “grand-puppies” Atticus, Hammy, Rocky, Sandie, and Tucker, golfing, tending to his hilltop home (Rolling Rock Ridge), attending Eagles games, and tormenting the many of us who still had to work. Bill loved living in Chadds Ford, was president of the Chadds Ford Historical Society Board of Directors, and each year could be seen marshaling his grandchildren around the Chadds Ford Great Pumpkin Carve.

Bill considered himself enormously wealthy with the love of his large and extremely close extended family. He was dedicated to making them all feel special, never hesitated to share his love, and took every opportunity to express his pride at their many accomplishments.  He was truly a man who lived life, loved life, and had a profound impact on those he shared it with.

He is survived by his siblings Charles Delaney, Particia Albert and Elizabeth Kyle (Phillip Kyle); his children Linda Tonn (James Tonn), William J. Delany Jr., and Mary Bordic (Andrew Bordic); his six grandchildren, Samantha, Madeline and Courtney Tonn, and Jack, AJ and Seamus Bordic; his former spouse Dorothy Goddard Delany; and a very large extended family. Bill was predeceased by his father and mother, William and Mary Delany; his sibling John Delaney; and his in-laws Marge Delaney, James Albert, and Margaret Delaney.
