As you get older, are you getting better?

As you get older, are you getting better? There are lots of ways to keep vital, attractive and healthy as you age, and the secret isn’t found in a cosmetic surgeon’s office!

Watching your weight is the single best thing you can do for your current and future health, self-esteem and appearance, research shows. And it’s never too soon to start laying that healthy groundwork.

Unfortunately, many people find that watching their weight becomes harder as they age. Women at midlife are especially vulnerable to putting on weight around their hips, stomachs and thighs—the unhealthiest spot to accumulate fat. Aging creates a “battle of the bulge” in several ways. First, beginning about age 20, metabolism tends to slow about 2 percent with each decade, reducing our caloric needs. Second, infirmities and ever-busier lives can limit opportunities for regular, vigorous exercise—a key ingredient of physical and emotional health! Lack of exercise tends to also accelerate changes in body composition that mean less muscle mass and more body fat. Less lean tissue means less efficient fat burning.

Being overweight can carry severe consequences for aging adults. Obesity is a major risk factor for early death. Weight around the abdomen poses a particularly strong risk of cardiovascular disease. And heart attacks are the nation’s leading cause of death—yes, even among women! Cardiovascular disease also creates a much higher risk of type 2 diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and other life-threatening conditions.

The good news: Anyone can reach and maintain a healthy weight at any age. And now is the time to start!

Start by talking with your doctor. Learn your risks and find out what kind of weight loss is right for you. By reaching and keeping a healthy weight, you can take charge of your health, prevent many age-related conditions, and maintain a youthful spirit and energy with every birthday candle you light!
