School board approves AP psychology class

It was a relatively brief and noncontroversial meeting for the Unionville-Chadds Ford School Board on March 18. However, board directors did approve adding an AP psychology course to the high school curriculum.

The 9-0 vote followed Director Holly Manzone’s comments that high school students have expressed interest in such a class, that it will be a new elective under social studies and that there is no prerequisite needed.

For 60 students to take part, she said, the cost would be $6,000 for books and an additional $1,800 for other costs.

Director Jeff Leiser said the new course would be a “great service” to students and that it was economical.

Fellow Director Kathy Do said the class opens up higher level education to more students.

High school Principal Paula Massanari sent an e-mail after the meeting expressing her enthusiasm for the course.

“This new elective course is available to any 10, 11th and 12th grade student who earns a B or above in his/her social studies course (academic level or above). One of the most exciting aspects of this new course is that it is designed to make an AP level course available to more UHS students since motivated students who are committed to hard work should be successful in AP Psychology…the topics that are discussed in a psychology course are both engaging and intended to build lifelong interpersonal skills.” the e-mail said.

• Do said her Policy Committee would hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. on April 15. Topics to be considered are bullying and harassment. That meeting takes place at Hillendale Elementary School, prior to the regular board meeting at 7:30 p.m.

• Chadds Ford Elementary School Principal Mark Ransford presented ribbons to members of NXT Generation, the team that represented the school during January’s First LEGO League competition. The board meeting was held at CFES.

• Unionville High School senior Megan Shea, of Birmingham Township, was named a first finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search. The district’s Web site links to the site Society for Science. That site references Shea’s development of a water filtration method that uses crushed seeds in a more economical manner than had been used before.
