UCF approved $755K for facilities

In a relatively short meeting, Unionville-Chadds Ford School Board directors voted to approve costs associated with several projects at the high school and Pocopson Elementary School.

The board approved a cost proposal of $515,410 to replace two chillers at UHS from Johnson Controls. According to Director Rashi Akki, the plan was originally proposed to be voted upon in 2025, but doing so this year gives the board extra lead time.

“We want to make sure we order them now so we can get them within 12 months so we can get them on time,” she said. Akki added that the cost is a little higher than originally budgeted but doing so now would “make out chillers quite efficient and will reduce costs going forward.”

The other project voted on for Unionville High was for the replacement of a grinder pump servicing UHS as well as Patton Middle School. The cost for that is slightly more than $17,000.

The board also voted to spend $86,293 to restore and recoat the high school’s tennis courts.

Directors also approved a cost proposal of $17,820 for painting and some new carpeting at Pocopson Elementary School, and $118,495 to decommission and demolish the wastewater treatment plant at Pocopson.

Akki said the PES is already connected to a public wastewater system and has been for a year. The 12-month delay in decommissioning the onsite system was at the request of the Department of Environmental Protection.

The votes were unanimous during the board’s April 15 meeting.

Beam signing for Hank’s Place

The reconstruction of Hank's Place is on track for a reopening late this summer.

Reconstruction continues for Hank’s Place and a beam signing is planned for the Route 1 and Creek Road site this Thursday, April 18. The beam signing allows those interested to sign the final beam before it’s lifted into place atop what will be the new Hank’s Place.

The foundation has been poured and the pylons are in place, allowing the new building to be up out of the flood plain per FEMA requirements. The Sept. 1, 2021, flood from Hurricane Ida left the old building unusable. According to Katie Young, who owns the restaurant with her husband Anthony Young, the restaurant could be open for business late this summer. Reconstruction began in December of 2023.

“We are truly grateful to the community for their steadfast support and wanted to give people the opportunity to leave a mark in the history of the establishment,” said Katie Young in a press release.

The new structure will be 3,009 square feet with an outdoor deck and, according to architect Tom Dever, there will be more of an open feel, and a porch with an open fireplace on the creek side will “provide a new opportunity for alfresco dining.”

The beam signing is planned from 3-6 p.m. this Thursday.
