State police from the Avondale barracks are investigating a motor vehicle crash involving a fire truck and two cars at Landhope Farms on Saturday, Feb. 24 just before 11 a.m. The fire truck from Po-Mar-Lin Fire Co. was traveling south on Unionville Road approaching E. Street Road, responding to a multi-car crash. Its lights and sirens were on. The second vehicle, unit 2, also southbound on Unionville, was in front of the fire vehicle and making a left-hand turn into the Landhope Farms parking lot when the Po-Mar-Lin vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and struck unit 2 on the driver’s side. Both vehicles traveled T-boned into the parking lot where unit 2 struck a light post, a utility pole, and a third unoccupied vehicle that was at a gas pump. Police reported no injuries.

Police said they charged a 61-year-old man with DUI following a one0car crash on Lenape Road in Pocopson Township on Feb. 20. The report said Shawn Jasper, of West Chester, was driving north on Lenape Road, but was driving too fast for conditions. The Saturn SW he was driving went off the road and ran into a tree.

Borough police said they arrested Jose Mendez-Lopez on suspicion of DUI following a Feb. 17 accident at the intersection of S. Union and W. South streets. The accident happened at 7:12 p.m. According to the report, police observed two vehicles with heavy damage, one crashed into the traffic light bollard. The responding officers were immediately met by the driver of "unit 2", who advised the operator of "unit 1" —Mendez-Lopez — had fled the scene on foot westbound on W. South Street and he believed him to be intoxicated. Police later observed Mendez-Lopez stumbling down the sidewalk with blood on his face and clothing. Police said he wasn’t injured but observed indicators suggesting intoxication and field sobriety tests showed impairment. He was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and refused a chemical test of his breath. Mendez-Lopez was processed and later released at his residence.

Driving 23 mph over the speed limit led to the arrest of Anthony Bird on Feb. 11, a police report said. According to that report, Bird is restricted to only driving vehicles equipped with interlock systems, but the interlock was not present in the car. Bird was taken into custody, transported to Pennsylvania State Police Avondale for processing, and later released pending issuance of a summons. Charges include speeding and illegally driving a vehicle without an interlock system.
