Sage on UCF board, new budget

Former Unionville-Chadds Ford School Board Director Robert Sage is back on the board and for the same reason he was on before—an early resignation of a sitting director.

In 2014 he was elected by board members to replace Eileen Bushelow, who resigned before the expiration of her term. On Monday night, the current board elected him to replace Mabel Yu, who stepped down last week for family reasons.

Sage, who has a master’s degree in business and was a senior vice president for Met Life, was one of seven candidates interviewed in a special meeting before the regular session on Monday night. The vote was 5-3. Aneesha Dhargalkar received the three votes.

He was sworn in after the vote at the end of the regular meeting. He’ll serve as one of the Region B directors through December 2023, longer if he chooses to run, and is elected in November of next year. Region B comprises Birmingham, Newlin, and Pocopson townships.

Sandwiched between the interviews and the vote for Yu’s replacement, the board approved the final budget for the next school year. As previously reported, that budget calls for appropriations of $95,401,419. Local property taxes will be 30.73 mils for Chester County property owners and 15.98 mils for Chadds Ford Township property owners. Chadds Ford is the only Delaware County municipality in the district.

The difference in tax rates is based on how the two counties assess property values. A mil is a tax of $1 for every $1,000 of assessed value.

Other business

The board also voted to replace the main scoreboard at Unionville High School gymnasium at almost $40,000 and to spend $492,343 for a building-wide emergency generator, lighting, and power upgrades at Hillendale Elementary School.
