Roadwork scheduled for week of Nov. 30

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has announced the following road projects, which are weather-dependent and could affect residents in the greater Chadds Ford area during the week of Nov. 30 through Dec. 7. PennDOT recommends that motorists allow extra time if they are traveling through one of the construction zones.

The right lane of northbound Route 202 will be closed between Boot Road and Route 30 in West Whiteland Township on Monday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a routine bridge inspection.

Motorists on Route 1 in both directions in Chadds Ford Township may experience slowdowns during a bridge deck cleaning operation between Avondale and Creek Roads. The work will be done from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, and Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Springdell Road in East Fallowfield and West Marlborough Townships will require lane closures between Doe Run Station and Rokeby Roads. The work will be done from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, and Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Route 30 in both directions in West Whiteland, West Caln and East Caln will be subject to lane closures between Routes 100 and 340 for sweeping. The work is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, through Thursday, Dec. 4.

Traffic signal installation in Kennett Square Borough will require lane closures on Union Street at South Street and on West State Street at South Mill Road. Crews are scheduled to work from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday, Dec. 1, through Friday, Dec. 5.

Cable guide rail installation on Route 1 in both directions in Kennett and New Garden Townships between Newark Road and East Baltimore Pike will continue to necessitate shoulder closures. Crews are scheduled to work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, Dec. 19.

Overnight lane restrictions will continue on Route 202 North in West Goshen Township at the Paoli Pike interchange from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Dec. 29, for ongoing work to repair the structurally deficient Fern Hill Road Bridge over Route 202, which was struck and damaged by an oversized truck last November. Fern Hill Road in West Goshen Township will be closed and detoured between Old Fern Hill Road and Five Points Road through Dec. 20 for bridge rehabilitation. Detours are posted.

The roundabout project continues on Wawaset Road in Pocopson Township. Wawaset is scheduled to be closed until Dec. 31 between Lenape-Unionville and Corinne Roads; detours are posted. Detours are also posted on Rt. 52, which will also be closed through Dec. 31 between Pocopson and Locust Grove Roads in Pocopson Township for roundabout reconstruction.

Burnt Mill Road in Kennett Township is closed and detoured between Norway and Spring Mill Roads indefinitely while crews prepare for repairs to a bridge that collapsed on April 24.

Island installation will cause lane restrictions on Kaolin Road at Ewart and Limestone Roads in New Garden Township. The work will be done from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday, Dec. 12.

Utility installation will cause lane closures on Marshall Street between High Street and Montgomery Avenue in West Chester Borough through Dec. 6; a detour is posted. The work will be done from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 202 in both directions in Tredyffrin and East Whiteland Township between the Chesterbrook and Route 401 interchanges will require lane closures for ongoing work on the widening project. The work will be done from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Monday, Dec. 1, through Friday, Dec. 5.

Weekday closures on Paoli Pike — between Warren Avenue and Devon Road — and Devon Road — between Paoli Pike and Grubb Road — will continue in Willistown Township for water main replacements. The closures will be in effect Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Jan. 31. Detours will be in effect.

How Charles Dickens altered Christmas

If you want to learn about how the 1843 publication of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol forever changed the celebration of Christmas, the Hadley Memorial Fund is promising to provide that information and more on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 3 p.m.

Dr. Elliott Engel
Professor Elliott Engel will discuss Charles Dickens and Christmas on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 3 p.m. in Kennett Square.

Using biography, anecdotes, analysis, and large doses of humor, Professor Elliot Engel, an award-winning teacher and author, will chronicle the popularity of this famous Christmas story and the marketing genius of its remarkable author. The proceeds of a subsequent book-signing will benefit the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, which Dickens helped found in 1852.

The presentation, entitled “Charles Dickens and Christmas with Elliot Engel,” will be held at the Kennett Friends Meeting, 125 Sickle St., Kennett Square, 19348. It is one of the annual programs made possible by the legacy of a benevolent area family. Tickets are free but must be requested.

Engel, who lives in lives Raleigh, N.C., has taught at the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, Duke University, and UCLA. Since 1980, he has been president of the Dickens Fellowship of North Carolina, the largest branch of this worldwide network of clubs. His mini-lecture series on Charles Dickens ran on PBS television stations around the country. He was inducted into the Royal Society of Arts in England for his 30 years of academic work and service in promoting Charles Dickens.

The Hadley Memorial Fund was established by Charles C. Hadley in his 1916 will, and then augmented by his sister, Irene Hadley Baird, to honor their parents, Theodore D. and Elizabeth A. Hadley. In addition to providing free admission, the programs aim to further the civic betterment, social welfare and education of the people of Kennett Square and the surrounding area.

Under the terms of Hadley’s will, the Kennett Friends Meeting and the Philadelphia Ethical Society select the offerings, which have run the gamut from entertainment to politics. For the first program in 1962, Hal Holbrook presented “A Night with Mark Twain” at Kennett High School.

Hadley has also hosted performers such as Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn and speakers that have included the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Linus Pauling. Musical offerings have ranged from Marian Anderson to Andres Segovia, and among the politicians and authors who have taken the stage are Edmund Muskie, Shirley Chisholm, Norman Cousins, Art Buchwald and Ogden Nash.

More recently, Hadley seasons have included lectures by Jerrold Post on terrorism, Linda Ales on photography, Donald L. Bartlett and James B. Steele on health policies, Douglas Tallamy on gardens and insects, and Paul Waldau on law and animals. Musical programs have included Hanchien Lee, Melomanie, and A Capella Pops, and performances have showcased Mum Puppettheatre, the DK BMX Bike Stunt Show, and storyteller Willy Claflin.
