Sonia Murray Scott Ralston of Chadds Ford

Sonia Murray Scott Ralston, 92, of Chadds Ford, died at Crosslands in Kennett Square, on June 7.

Born and raised in England, she was the daughter of the late Ella Flinn and Murray Duncan Scott of England. For 52 years, she was the wife of the late Edward Reilly (Pat) Ralston, and is survived by their three sons, Peter Ralston of Rockport, Maine, Mark Ralston of Centre Hall, and David Ralston of Boise, Idaho. She also leaves five grandchildren, Scott, Greg, Meredith, Will and Chris; 10 nieces and nephews; and, in England, her brother, David Murray Scott of Chichester.

Sonia came to this country in 1947 after four years with Fighter Command of the Royal Air Force in World War II, followed by work with the Cultural Relations Department of the American Embassy in London.

A resident of the Chadds Ford/Kennett Square area since 1957, she was a member of Birmingham Friends Meeting, the Chadds Ford Historical Society, and the Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art. She also contributed a monthly column to the Kennett Paper for some six years, and was a supporter of The Peacekeepers at the Carter Center in Atlanta, Ga.

A free-lance writer throughout her life, she always sought to communicate to others her unshakable belief in the possibility of world peace. But it would, she agreed, demand of us all great courage. Often she wrote of being accompanied throughout the years by a continuous sense of gratitude for family, for friends, and for the world about her.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on July 12, at Birmingham Friends Meeting, 1245 South Birmingham Road, West Chester, PA 19382. Interment will be private. Arrangements by DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith & Boyd Funeral Home, Inc. 610-696-1181.
