Elizabeth M. Spencer, 88, of Media, died Wednesday Sept. 25, at Taylor Hospice, in Ridley Park.  She was the wife of the late Richard N. Spencer Sr. who died in 2012 and with whom she shared 63 years of marriage.

Born in Darby, she was a daughter of the late Raymond S. Martin Sr., and the late Mabel Laura (Reyburn) Martin.  She was preceded in death by her sister Doris L. Heckert and her brothers Raymond S. Martin, Jr., DDS and Richard R. Martin, PhD.

Elizabeth was a 1943 graduate of Darby High School and a 1947 graduate of Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing.  Soon after nursing school she had the honor to be the personal scrub nurse for John Gibbon Jr., the inventor of the heart-lung machine.  With marriage and the desire to start a family Elizabeth put her nursing career on hold to become a homemaker. As her children matured and required less of her time, she accepted a position working as head nurse in the operating room of Sacred Heart Hospital in Chester.  Her nursing expertise and passion for the OR later led her to Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park. Here she served as operating room supervisor for many years. Elizabeth finished her career at Taylor Hospital as the supply, processing and distribution coordinator retiring in 1992.

She enjoyed reading, writing, crossword puzzles, card playing, ceramics, piano, and musicals but most of all she adored her family.

Loved ones surviving include one son, Richard N. Spencer Jr., (Donna) of Bear, Del.; one daughter, Kim K. Smith (Bruce) of Cochranville; two brothers, Kenneth R. Martin, (Barbara) and Hugh Lenox Martin (Meredith) both of Oxford; eight grandchildren, Beth Castaldi (Joe), Bruce Smith (Stacy), Kimberly Guindon (Jeffrey), Christine Smith (Alan Barton), Heather, Ashley, Richard III, and Raymond Spencer; and six great grandchildren, Jessica Smith, Courtney Castaldi, Ashlyn Smith, Spencer and Parker Guindon and Lily Ann Smith Barton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
