Kennett Symphony of Chester County announces competition winners

The
Kennett Symphony of Chester County’s Music Director, Mary Woodmansee Green announced the winners of the 2011 Kennett Symphony Junior Instrumental
Competition held on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, in the Kendal-at-Longwood
Auditorium. The annual competition, chaired by Carol Lind, is for gifted
musicians in grades 4-8. This year, 37 young musicians from Pennsylvania,
New Jersey and Delaware took part. The Kennett Mushroom Festival is a generous
sponsor of this event.

There
were two categories: Violin/Piano and Other Orchestra Instruments. In the
Violin/Piano category First Prize
was awarded to Tiffaney Hsia, violin. Other awards went to Second place winner Lawrence Lee, piano and Third
place winner Chloe Breynen, piano. Honorable Mention went to Jacquline
Wu, violin. In the Other Orchestra Instruments category the following prizes
were awarded: First Prize to David Kim, clarinet; Second Prize to Rachel Rice,
cello, Third Prize to ChanWok Hwan, cello and Honorable Mention to Simon
Housner, cello.

Tiffaney Hsiaof Princeton
Junction, New Jersey, is in 7th grade at Thomas Grover Middle School.
She has studied violin for 2 years, and is currently studying with Vladimir
Agilin. She performed the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in e minor
in the Competition.

Lawrence Leeof Glen
Mills, Pennsylvania, is in the 7th grade at Garnet Valley Middle
School. He has been studying piano for 8 years and is currently a private
student of David Brown. He performed the Waltz in e minor by Chopin.

Pianist
Chloe Braynen is also a seventh grader at Garnet Valley Middle
School. She has studied for 9
years and currently is a private piano student of Lotus Chen. Chloe
played Chopin’s Nocturne in C Sharp
minor.

Jacqueline Wu, from Chester Springs, PA, is a 5th
grader at Pickering Valley Elementary School. She has studied for 5 years and
is a violin student of Sylvia Ahramjian. She performed Jeno Hubay’s Scene de las Csarda, Op. 32, No. 4.

David Kim, from Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, attends Harrington
Middle School as an 8th grader. He has studied the clarinet for 4
years. His teacher is Gi Lee. David performed the Mozart Clarinet Concerto in A Major, k. 622.

Rachel Rice is a 7th grader at PS DuPont Middle
School in Wilmington, Delaware. She has studied the cello for 8 years. Her
teacher is Jennifer Stomberg. Rachel played Popper’s Gavotte, Op. 23, No.2.

Chan Wook Hwang, from Bryn Mawr, Pennslvania, is an 8th
grade student at Radnor Middle School. He studies with Jie Jin and has played
the cello for the past 4 years. Chan Wook played the Concerto No. One by J.C. Bach.

Simon Housner, of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, is home-schooled. He
has played the cello for 6 years and currently studies with Glenn Fischbach. He
played Faure’s Elegie.
