In late March, Congress passed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018, giving military veterans greater access to non-invasive, non-addictive pain relief through chiropractic care at more Veterans’ Affairs (VA) facilities throughout the country.
With the new measure in place, Chadds Ford-based chiropractor, Dr. Tom Bianco, is on a crusade to educate local veterans and their families about the benefits of chiropractic care, dispel concerns about treatment, and introduce them to the highly-specialized Gonstead technique.
“This legislation is a great start in continuing to care for those who served our nation,” said,” Dr Bianco. “Many of our veterans suffer from extreme back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions resulting from their service. However, there is reluctance in many to seek chiropractic treatment out of fear and misconceptions. Having used Gonstead for more than 25 years of practice, I have genuinely healed people who suffered debilitating pain and had no hope. I want to make a difference”
Now through August 31st, Dr, Thomas Bianco of Bianco Family Chiropractic is offering free individual evaluations, diagnostic X-rays, and personalized exercise regimens to get military heroes on their way to feeling good.
Currently, veterans have access to chiropractic services at more than 70 major VA treatment facilities in the United States, but nearly 100 VA sites offer little to no availability. This disparity comes at a time when the need for drug-free options for musculoskeletal conditions is urgent. VA data cites “diseases of the musculoskeletal system/connective system” such as back pain as the No. 1 ailment experienced by veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who access VA treatment. Moreover, surveys show that, like the civilian population, many veterans struggle with prescription painkiller (opioid) addiction.
“The Gonstead Technique is the gold standard of chiropractic care,” said Dr. Bianco. “It goes beyond what many chiropractors consider a spinal assessment. It is such a specialized approach that I am one of fourteen physicians in Pennsylvania with the credentials to practice it.”

Kathleen Vance will discuss her work, including her site-specific installation that recreates a segment of the Brandywine River on the core wall of the Museum’s atrium. Vance will share insights about projects that connect people to aspects of nature that are overlooked or underappreciated. Vance creates miniature landscapes inside vintage suitcases and trunks. The bucolic scenes harken to a place out of time and a romanticism of nature, with lush foliage and flowing streams. These relaxing scenarios consider personal land ownership, water rights and the need for stewardship and preservation of our green areas and water sources. These works bring nature back into everyday life and the hurried pace of each person's travels can be slowed to a moment of respite for contemplation and reflection.
The Museum will open at 5:30 p.m. with the program at 6 p.m. and a reception to follow.

Work with foraged twigs, bark, leaves, cones, and other botanicals to construct an enchanting abode for fairies, elves, and trolls. Get a closer look at trades of the eighteenth century in Newlin’s “History at Work” series. Members of Newlin Grist Mill’s staff, volunteers, and outside artisans will demonstrate their crafts and talk with visitors about how different trades and skills were integral to life in colonial Pennsylvania and to the operation of Newlin Grist Mill. These demonstrations take place on the last Saturday of the month between 10:00am and 3:00pm.

Escape Brandywine places participants into roles of spies on the eve of the Battle of Brandywine, and charges them with finding General Howe's battle plans that have been hidden inside the Chads House for safe keeping. Using real Revolutionary War spy techniques, codes and cyphers, players will have 60 minutes to solve puzzles that will allow them to locate the plans and escape the house to deliver the plans to George Washington!

Join Newlin's staff naturalist for an afternoon of exciting environmental activities. Look for the pop-up naturalist tent in different parts of the park and discover the plants and animals that call Newlin home. LET FREEDOM RING—created in 1972—begins nationally with the tapping of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia at 2:00 PM Eastern Daylight time. Each year over 100,000 Americans participate in sites that include the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, and the Washington Memorial at Valley Forge.
The public is cordially invited to attend Unionville Presbyterian Church’s annual 4th of July bell-ringing ceremony. At 2:00 Eastern Daylight Time, beginning with bells in Philadelphia, bells across the Nation will peal, officially commemorating the birth of American Independence.
People of all faiths and ages are invited to attend the local celebration, held annually at Unionvillle Presbyterian Church. Everyone is requested to be seated inside the church by 1:25 pm as the program will begin at 1:30 sharp with bells being rung at 2:00 pm. Guests will remain seated for the pealing of the church bells. Following the main bell-ringing ceremony, children will be invited to ring the church’s historic, antique bell. Immediately following the bell-ringing, there will be an ice-cream social held on the Church lawn.
The Boy Scouts of America, Troop 22, will present the Colors and lead the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance. Choirmaster William Johnson will present patriotic music. There will be patriotic souvenirs for the children in attendance.
This year's keynote speaker is J. Robert MacPherson, Special Agent, U. S. Secret Service (retired). During his 22-year career Rob served five presidents - Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton. He was assigned to presidential protection at various times throughout his career and was specifically detailed to the White House for six years. He did field assignments in the Washington (D. C.), New York City, Philadelphia, and Wilmington (DE) offices. He was a member of a specialized weapons and tactics counter-terrorism unit for three years and was a program manager at the Service’s training center in Beltsville, Maryland, for six years. Post-Secret Service he worked for eight years as a senior criminal investigator/Assistant Special Agent In Charge at the U. S. Department of Justice, Office of the Inspector General. His topic will be “America’s Presidents: a Quick Tour Through History”.

The Delaware Symphony Orchestra at Longwood Gardens July 8
Featuring virtuoso violinist and Curtis Institute alum Jennifer Koh
The Delaware Symphony Orchestra returns to the Longwood stage Sunday, July 8 for an evening of Mendelssohn and Brahms featuring the dazzling violinist Jennifer Koh. Known for her intense and commanding performances, Koh joins the Delaware Symphony Orchestra on Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, one of the greatest violin concertos of all time and his last major orchestral work.
Born in Chicago of Korean parents, Ms. Koh began playing the violin by chance, choosing the instrument in a Suzuki-method program only because spaces for cello and piano had been filled. She made her debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at age 11. Ms. Koh is Musical America’s 2016 Instrumentalist of the Year, a winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition, and a recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant. She has a Bachelor of Art degree in English literature from Oberlin College and studied at the Curtis Institute, where she worked extensively with Jaime Laredo and Felix Galimir.

Enjoy the rich beauty of the Brandywine Creek in the summer from the museum’s expansive atrium windows. Artists working in all media are invited to explore the vista from inside the museum where they can sketch, paint or photograph, while staying cool. Participants may also enjoy sketching (with pencil) in the museum’s galleries. Participants are responsible for providing all art materials (including drop cloths).

We are so excited to welcome Heather Pierson to the Friends Folk Club on Friday, July 13th.
Heather Pierson is an award-winning pianist, multi-genre singer/songwriter, arranger, bandleader, and performer. She plays New Orleans-style jazz and blues, Americana and folk music with piano, tenor banjo, melodica, and acoustic guitar. This visit, Heather will also bring Davy Sturtevant on strings and cornet and Shawn Nadeau on upright bass, forming an acoustic trio that will fill the hall with the wonderful music that springs from Heather’s boundless creativity!
Heather first discovered her love of music as she listened to her dad play his clarinet to the recordings of Pete Fountain and Woody Herman. When she and her parents moved to Maine, at age five, her dad started to teach her to play the piano. “I’ll never forget it,” she recalls. “The very first time I played the piano – a real piano – I knew that this was exactly what I wanted to do, every moment that I had the chance to do it.” At this point in her career, Heather has released four recordings on her own and, in June of this year, her first full-length recording with Davy and Shawn: Singin’, a collection of ten originals and two classics. Defying description and yet fully embracing all musical styles, Heather is an artist who speaks the language of music in as many dialects as her abilities will allow. Her life’s work, she says, "is to share her love of music and of life with others – one song, one heart, one mind at a time." The last time Heather was in the area, she sold out the venue!
