Family Promise of Southern Chester County, a nonprofit dedicated to helping families with children experiencing homelessness, is hosting an Open House on Thursday, March 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. at its new Resource Center located at 1156 West Baltimore Pike, in Kennett Square. At this exciting event, Family Promise will celebrate the generosity and support from over 600 volunteers, congregations, businesses and community service clubs.
Family Promise staff and board will conduct tours of the new Resource Center, answer questions, and share the organization’s vision for providing families experiencing homelessness with a path toward a financially stable future. “Every child deserves a home,” said Susan Minarchi, executive director of Family Promise of Southern Chester County. “I wake up every morning determined to fulfill that promise. It’s the driving force behind everything we do at Family Promise.”
The new Family Promise Resource Center, a 4,000 square-foot, three-story building, offers families the resources necessary for rebuilding their lives. During the day, families have full access to a kitchen for preparing meals, computers for securing employment and housing, washer and dryers, storage facilities, showers, and a cozy, safe nursery. Family Promise provides comprehensive case management, counseling, training, and financial literacy guidance at the Resource Center. Every evening for a week at a time, 27 local congregations offer meals, shelter and companionship for up to 14 family members, and host families for four separate weeks per year.
“Our new Resource Center is designed to provide families with all the comforts of home until they are back on their feet,” added Susan Minarchi. “Our volunteers and supporters are the reason Family Promise is able to alleviate family homelessness in Southern Chester County.”
About Family Promise: Family Promise of Southern Chester County is committed to helping children and their families experiencing homelessness in the Avondale, Kennett Consolidated, Oxford, and Unionville-Chadds Ford school districts. Its goal is to help families achieve lasting self-sufficiency and stability by providing comprehensive case management services, as well as shelter and meals through a network of congregations and volunteers until they find sustainable housing. Family Promise of Southern Chester County is part of a national, non-profit initiative founded in 1986 with over 200 affiliates across the US changing the lives of families. MLK CommUNITY Food Drive March 20th – March 31st
Donations Are Critical
The MLK CommUNITY of the Greater Kennett Area kicks off their Food Drive starting March 20th and it runs until March 31st. Historically, the food drive was organized on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Day of Sharing, however, this year it will be conducted later. “We are excited to continue the vision to create a beloved community in the Greater Southern Chester County area that provides opportunities for the eradication of poverty and the food drive is one initiative our Board has been coordinating,” says Carol Black, Board President. “It is wonderful to honor Dr. King’s legacy throughout the year, not just on one day but also during the time to commemorate the March from Selma”, says Black. The food drive benefits the Kennett Area Community Service (KACS’s Food Cupboard) as well as The Bridge Food and Clothing Ministry in West Grove.
“Today more than ever is it incredibly important for our community to support a food drive”, says Melanie Weiler, KACS Executive Director. “Our supply is low, we anticipate cuts in funding, and we need to prepare. We can’t thank our community enough”, says Weiler.
Food items that are in the most demand include but not limited to: canned vegetables and low sugar fruit, tomato sauce, fresh produce, rice, pasta, oatmeal, dried beans, tuna, and peanut butter. “We encourage food drives to be conducted by churches, neighborhoods, businesses, service clubs, schools, scouts, sports teams, etc. during this week”, says Ginny Levy, Chair of the MLK Food Drive Committee. “Have fun, make it competitive, get creative, anything you can do to spark the interest and get collecting”, say Levy.
Once items are collected, you can conveniently drop off your donations directly to the KACS Food Cupboard any day between Monday – Friday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Special volunteers will be at KACS on Friday, March 31st from 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm and then on Saturday, April 1st from 8:00 am – Noon. Please visit KACS website for location information at: www.kacsonline.net
Additional information such as materials you can use for your drives including flyers, posters, tips on conducting a food drive in your community as well as information about the organization and volunteer opportunities, may be found on the MLK CommUNITY of Greater Kennett Square’s website: www.mlkcommunity.org or email them at [email protected]. And, follow them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Mlkcommunity.
