Registration is now open for La Comunidad Hispana’s (LCH) first annual 5K and 1-Mile Family Fun Walk in Anson B. Nixon Park on Sunday, September 25, 2016.
Registration starts at 8:00 a.m. The 5K, scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m., is a fast, fun course through and around beautiful Anson B. Nixon Park with chip timing. A 1-mile family fun walk will follow at 9:05 a.m., with fun activity stations along the trail. The event will finish up with a children’s 50-yard dash at 10:00 a.m., closing remarks, and prizes for the runners and the teams with the most team spirit, most amount raised for LCH, and most team members.
Entertainment is being planned throughout the morning with live music and appearances from team members from Philadelphia Union.
All proceeds will go to support La Comunidad Hispana (LCH), a nonprofit bilingual community health center that helps low-income families to stay healthy, build strong families, and lead productive, fulfilling lives. At 10am Hadley Presents a FREE concert by El Mariachi Flores as a finale to the event. The band performed for Pope Francis during his recent visit to Philadelphia.
In partnership with the Downingtown-Thorndale Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Borough of Downingtown, Victory Brewing Company presents the Downingtown Fall Fest, an annual street festival which ‘falls’ on the first official weekend of the autumn season. Each year, the free, family-friendly event beckons locals to spend their day enjoying live music, great local food, shopping and Victory beer, including the Oktoberfest amber lager, Festerbier. Downingtown Fall Fest will be held at Green Street and East Pennsylvania Avenue in downtown Downingtown. The Victory Beer Garden, along with the Brewpub on Wheels, will be located at Green Street next to the lake. Chester County Women (CCW), a 501c3 organization, invites area women interested in playing a fun 9-hole round of golf to its annual Women Only Golf Outing – WOGO! 2016 – being held at the West Chester Country Club in West Chester, Pennsylvania, on Monday, September 26.
This outing is CCW’s 10th Annual Tournament and is held as a women only event to underscore the importance of enabling women to network on the golf course as well as to raise scholarship money for a key global objective: education.
Cost is $90, which covers a golf clinic, greens fees, golf cart, and 10th hole hors d’oeuvres. A cash bar will be open during the 10th Hole Celebration, the networking/awards portion of the event, from 4:30- 6 pm. Check-in is Monday, September 26, between 1 and 1:45 PM, with a golf clinic offered at 1:15 pm until the shotgun start at 2:00 PM. Or you can practice putting and chipping until the shotgun start. Women golfers at every skill level are invited to the WOGO! 2016 event, which is centered around the lighthearted aspects of the game. Inexperienced golfers who might ordinarily be reluctant to play are encouraged to register. Event organizer Bronwyn Martin says, "This event isn't about the score – it's about the goal of raising money, having fun and meeting other women who believe in the power of a group to help others."
The West Chester Golf & Country is a multiple tee, nine (9) hole golf course that plays to an 18 hole par 70. It measures 5700 yards with a slope rating of 126. With tight fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and small greens, the course offers a challenge to player of all skill levels. The course features Bent grass fairways and greens. West Chester Golf & Country Club enjoys a rich history dating back to its founding in 1897, making this one of the most historic and well respected clubs in the region.

All of the WOGO! 2016 profits go to West Chester University (WCU) Foundation's MM Power Scholarship Fund, which was started in 2007 by Bronwyn Martin, a WCU MBA alumnus.
Martin believes strongly in the power of education and its importance worldwide, especially for women. “Over 70% of West Chester University students rely on financial aid or scholarships to assist in funding their education. In these turbulent economic times, scholarship dollars are more critical than ever. The WOGO event is a great way to network with women and financially support the next generation of professional women.”
Although it is a state-supported university, WCU relies on private financial gifts to enable offering the finest opportunities to its students. The MM Power Scholarship is awarded each semester to a woman majoring in the sciences or business at the university. Candidates must meet specific criteria, including a minimum GPA of 2.5 and demonstrated financial need. Besides helping to alleviate the expense of obtaining an education, the MM Power Scholarship reduce the stress of borrowing money to attend college.

Visit historic Newlin Grist Mill on Saturday, October 1, 2016 from 10 AM to 4 PM to experience the site’s annual Fall Harvest Festival. A local favorite, this event provides fun for the whole family!
This year’s festival will feature nearly two dozen different demonstrations of historic skills and trades, including blacksmithing, open-hearth cooking, Native American skills, and much more. Listen to music by the Colonial Revelers, learn colonial dancing, have your silhouette made, and try out traditional paper marbling. Many favorite activities from years past will be returning, including pumpkin painting and hayrides. New this year, the Fall Harvest Festival will also feature interactive performances by Tuckers’ Tale Puppet Theatre!
Visitors can shop in the festival’s Colonial Market for handmade soaps, 18th-century-style jewelry, colonial games, pumpkins and apples, and cornmeal ground in the site’s 1704 grist mill. Traditionally-made pretzels—baked in the onsite bake oven—and gourmet pastries can also be purchased in the market. The Concordville-Chadd’s Ford Rotary Club’s food truck will be offering food for sale throughout the day, as well. For adult guests, the festival will be hosting a Colonial Tavern from 1 PM to 3 PM, where the Twin Lakes Brewing Company will be on hand to give out samples of their beers.

The John Morton Restoration Ceremony will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Burial Ground, Welsh Avenue and East 3rd Street in Chester, where the monument is located. Morton was a signer of the Declaration of Independence of Swedish/Finnish ancestry. Michael R. D’Andrea, governor of the Swedish Colonial Society, will welcome attendees, and Kim-Eric Williams, a historian for Swedish Colonial Society, will provide an overview. A host of dignitaries, reenacts, and descendants of John Morton are expected participate in the festivities.

At work in an art museum, a janitor accidentally leaves an apple behind on an empty pedestal. Patrons come along and mistake it for a piece of art. Crazy perceptions and hijinks ensue, culminating in acts of censorship and protest. Sponsored by the Hadley Fund, the Wilmington Drama League will present "The Apple," a children's theater pillow play – part of a series of shows by kids for kids. This series is geared toward children 10 and under (but is secretly enjoyed by their parents, too). This event will take place at Kennett Friends Meeting, 125 W. Sickle Street in Kennett Square on Sunday, Oct. 2 , at 2 p.m.
This Sunday, October 2 from 3-5pm, popular suspense novelist Matty Dalyrmple and award-winning author Bruce Mowday will talk at Galer Estate Winery, located at 700 Folly Hill Road in Kennett Square. The subject of their discussion on writing is "Keeping it Real: Research in Fiction and Non-Fiction." The talk is open to the public free of charge and writers, want-to-be-writers and book lovers alike are welcome to join in the conversation and ask the authors about the art of writing. Galer Estate Winery enjoys opening its doors to the arts, with pop-up art shows, author discussions and book signings, and a variety of music performers every weekend. If you have a book idea or just need some valuable input to continue with your current writing project, then this might be a great opportunity for you to hear from two successful authors first-hand.
"Keeping it Real: Research in Fiction and Non-Fiction" will discuss how writers use research in the creation of fiction and non-fiction works. Each author will talk for approximately 25 minutes and then there will be an open question and answer session with the audience.
Matty Dalyrmple will discuss authorial decisions regarding what constitutes valid deviation from objective fact in fictional works. She will use as the basis for the discussion her second Ann Kinnear novel, The Sense of Reckoning (which, like her first novel, The Sense of Death, includes many scenes set in Chester County and the Brandywine Valley). Matty is currently working on her third novel, "Rock, Paper, Scissors" due out in 2017.
Bruce E. Mowday has authored over 16 books on history, sports, business and true crime. He has appeared on numerous television shows and has hosted his own radio show. He was Chairman of the Chester County Historical Society and President of the Brandywine Battlefield Park Associates. Bruce will discuss how a writer of non-fiction vets sources, especially on the internet, and how to know when the research portion of a work is complete. He will use as a basis for the discussion his book September 11, 1777: Washington's Defeat at Brandywine Dooms Philadelphia.
Galer Estate Winery is on land where some of the first shots of the Battle of Brandywine were fired, and General Howe is said to have lodged in the house on the property and quartered the Hessian troops where the current Chardonnay vines are now making Gold medal wines. Lele Galer, co-owner of Galer Estate Winery, is very excited to have the authors at the winery and is particularly interested in the subject matter of their discussion. " I have started on a graphic novel and I really need to know how to use historical sources better. It can get very confusing with so much contradictory information in books and over the internet. I know that Matty and Bruce will offer some great tips and insight!" Lele adds.
The authors event is free, but you are encouraged to buy wine and the author's books will also be available for purchase. Galer Estate Winery has won over 100 medals and awards in the past five years, and offers a beautiful area for wine tasting, with a friendly and knowledgeable staff to help you choose your wines. Crozer-Keystone Health System Hosts Free Comprehensive Screening Events in Glen Mills and Springfield
Crozer-Keystone Health System will hold two free comprehensive screening events this fall at the Crozer-Keystone Regional Cancer Center at Brinton Lake (500 Evergreen Drive, Glen Mills) on Saturday, Oct. 8 and at Springfield Hospital (190 West Sproul Road, Springfield) in the main lobby on Saturday, Nov. 19.
