FREE Hadley Fund Programs Feature Magpie Music
Sword of the Spirit
Concert and One-Act Play
The Hadley Fund is pleased to present Magpie Music, Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner, performing a concert and one-act play, Sword of the Spirit.
The music from their concert on Saturday, January 16th at 7pm is inspired by the lives of abolitionists, Mary and John Brown.
The one-act play on Sunday, January 17th at 2pm is based upon the letters between Mary and John.
Both performances will take place at Kennett Friends Meeting, 125 West Sickle Street, in Kennett Square.
John Brown has spent the last forty days of his life in a jail cell. During this time he has received many visitors, given interviews and composed over one hundred letters to acquaintances, friends and members of his family, including his wife, Mary. At rise, Brown addresses the audience in the last “interview” he has agreed to give. He tells them his story, expounding on his life, his beliefs and what he considers his God-given mission to destroy the evil of slavery.
From another part of the stage Mary writes to him from Lucretia Mott’s home, where she has stopped on her journey to see him one last time. She also addresses the audience directly, telling the story of her life with John to “Mrs. Mott.” Sword of the Spirit is a singular opportunity for the audience to witness this story of the famed radical abolitionist, before he is taken to the gallows.
The artists will engage the audience in a discussion immediately following the play.

On Sunday January 31, a rare writing and art treat from 3-5 p.m. at Galer Estate Winery in Kennett Square. As a part of the January art theme for "The Art of Writing" along The Brandywine Artisan Wine Trail, the winery welcomes the editors of Schiffer Publishing House to discuss the what it takes to get a book published, and what they look for.
After a question and answer session, the event will move to the main tasting room where artist Robert Jackson will be there to sell and sign his two Schiffer art books, and sell some new original art works. That is very exciting! Robert has just completed a series of delightful and fun painted images on vintage postcards for sale on Sunday.
Photographer Antelo Devereux will also be on site with original photographs to sell, as well as sign and sell copies of "Chester County Perspectives" published by Schiffer. When I first was introduced to Mr. Devereux, I was told that he was the finest photographer in Chester County, and took the best pictures of this area that have ever been published. This will be a rare treat to mingle with two wonderful artists, buy great books and artwork too!

Hear what Allison has to say…..
When I wrote my first book I really had no intention of being an author or a speaker. It was written from the pages of my private journal entries. There was something powerful about that. Something so powerful about the release, the sharing, and the authenticity of admitting my life being exactly the way I wanted it unless I decided to create a new experience. I then would read those pages of my private stories describing what I went through, how I felt and how I viewed the world. Women would just cry and thank me for being transparent.
It was at that moment I knew this little girl from Jamaica, Queens had a story to tell. Everyone has a story, and while the story of being adopted, being abused, being abandoned, losing both parents as a teen, running away, having more addresses than I can count, drug dealers, abortions, bad checks, being a teen mom, being promiscuous, failed relationships and eventually given a 7 year prison sentence is quite compelling, the real gem in the journey was in creating a way out and sharing with others the way. It is the story of rising from being the least likely to succeed to becoming the CEO of my own company, getting to travel the globe and changing lives along the way; The Breaking Free.
Gallery Talk: Wyeth & Nureyev, a Grande Révérence -Wednesday, March 9, 2016, 2:00 pm, Free with Museum admission. Jamie Wyeth’s portraits of Rudolf Nureyev express the painter’s longstanding admiration and appreciation for the dancer and his work.
