Doctor Lecture Answers the Question “Is it Arthritis?”

Do you suffer from joint pain or swelling?  Especially as one ages, the pain could possibly be arthritis, a condition caused by inflammation in the tissue lining our joints.  Join Jennersville Regional Hospital for a free seminar featuring family physician Michael Barkasy, M.D., as he discusses the basics of joint pain associated with arthritis, including how it is diagnosed and treated.  The lecture is set for Thursday, April 23, 6:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 815 E. Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square.  Registration is required as space is limited.
Family Physician Michael Barkasy, of Family Practice Associates of Southern Chester County, is board-certified and a member of Jennersville Regional Hospital Medical Staff.   He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and completed residency training for Family and Community Medicine at Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, DE.  Dr. Barkasy has been practicing in West Grove since 2002 and opened Family Practice Associates (FPA) in 2008 across the street from Jennersville Regional Hospital.  Last year, FPA opened a second location at 200 Old Forge Lane, Kennett Square, in the Beiler-Campbell Center at the intersection of U.S. Rt. 1 and Bayard Road.

In its 33^rd year, the Chester County Antiques Show is the Chester County Historical Society's (CCHS) largest community and fundraising event. It will be held from April 24-26 at the Phelps School with the theme: "From the Earth: Chester County’s Raw Materials Transformed." Pre-registration is now underway for The Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County, Inc.’s (CVC) 20^th Annual Chester County Race Against Violence, to be held Saturday, April 25. Registration and check-in will be held from 7:30 a.m. until 8:45 a.m. at the Chester County Justice Center, 201 W. Market St. in West Chester, on the day of the race. Starting times for the event are as follows: 9 a.m. for the 5K Run/Walk and 9:05 a.m. for the 1 Mile Walk. All proceeds from this annual fundraiser are slated for CVC’s supportive services to child and adult victims of all types of crime, as well as prevention/education programs on personal safety and risk reduction for all ages.

Chadds Ford Township and the Chadds Ford Civic Association will hold their annual recycle day and roadside cleanup for township residents, Saturday, April 25, at the township building. Activities will begin at 8 a.m. with roadside cleanup. Residents who volunteer will meet at the township building then disperse to pick-up trash off the sides of township streets. From 9 a.m. until noon, residents will be able to donate nonperishable foods, gently used clothing, furniture and home goods, as well as electronics for re-use. Additionally, residents will also be able to drop off for recycling the following items: electronics or “anything with a plug” with the exception of items containing hazardous materials such as Freon, confidential documents for shredding, and residential propane tanks and gas cans. Nike will be the official sponsor for the 12th annual Unionville Track and Field Invitational on Saturday, April 25. Gates will open at 8:30 am. Events begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude around 3 p.m. There is a $5 entrance fee, and seniors and students are free. Approximately 50 teams will be competing this year with top athletes who have competed on the national, state and district level. Food concessions and Nike t-shirts will be on sale.

Pennsbury Township's. 14^th annual Community Yard Sale, is Saturday. April 25, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the park behind the township building, 702 Baltimore Pike (U.S. Route 1) near the Chaddsford Winery. More than 60 households are expected. Tools, toys, household goods, antiques and more. Lots of bargains. The yard sale is held annually by Pennsbury Township as part of Spring Clean-Up Week. Rain date is May 2.

Get involved in one of the  largest tree-planting parties Natural Lands Trust has ever hosted. We’re aiming to plant more than 650 trees at our 1,263-acre ChesLen Preserve, in an all-volunteer effort generously supported by TreeVitalize. This large-scale tree planting is part of an important riparian buffer project in the southwest area of the preserve. Preserving riparian buffer (the land around waterways) is one of the best ways to protect and improve creek water quality. No experience is necessary; instruction, tools, and snacks will be provided. Horace Pippin: The Way I See It

April 25 through July 19

One of the leading figures of 20th-century art, Horace Pippin (1888-1946) is known for his insightful, expressive and bold paintings. The exhibition will examine the work of Pippin, a self-taught artist who remained independent-creating and upholding a unique aesthetic sensibility. Pippin vividly depicted a range of subject matter, from intimate family moments and floral still lifes to powerful scenes of war, history and religion. Horace Pippin: The Way I See It will include 65 paintings-close to half of the artist's oeuvre-assembled from museums and private collections across the United States. The Brandywine River Museum of Art will be the only venue for this exhibition, the first major exhibition of the artist's work in more than 20 years.
