Longwood Gardens Announces Release of Du Pont Gardens of the Brandywine Valley
New book celebrates the du Pont family legacy of land stewardship and horticultural creativity. Book signing and lecture slated for October 1 at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library.
Kennett Square, PA - Longwood Gardens today announced the release of Du Pont Gardens of the Brandywine Valley, a stunning new book featuring photographs by Larry Lederman and text by Marta McDowell. The book explores the rich history and unique attributes of five former du Pont estates that have become cultural landmarks in the Brandywine Valley, including Hagley Museum and Library, Nemours Estate, Mt. Cuba Center, Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, and Longwood Gardens. The hardcover book retails for $60 and is available now onsite at Longwood’s Garden Shop and online at shop.longwoodgardens.org/
Published by Monacelli, Du Pont Gardens of the Brandywine Valley features 240 pages and 220 stunning photographs. The book opens with a preface by Lederman that details his personal experience with the gardens, an introductory essay by Charles A. Birnbaum, President and CEO of the Cultural Landscape Foundation, who writes about the du Pont landscape legacy, and a chapter dedicated to the du Pont heritage of horticulture and stewardship. McDowell, a garden writer who combines a deep knowledge of garden design and horticulture with a penchant for social history, contributed the book’s thoughtful text, relating the stories of these gardens, both their history and their commitment to the future through strategies for sustainable management and growth.

Since arriving in America in 1800, the descendants of the du Pont family have made their mark as innovative industrialists, generous philanthropists, pioneering preservationists, collectors of American decorative arts, and ecological stewards of natural environments. Longwood’s own legacy finds its beginning interwoven with the du Pont family’s passion for nature and preservation. In 1906, industrialist Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, PA, to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Through that act of preservation, Longwood Gardens was born. In Du Pont Gardens of the Brandywine Valley, readers can view the iconic landscapes of one of the world’s great horticultural displays and its 1,100 acres of dazzling gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, and grand conservatory.
Lederman’s vivid photographs exquisitely capture the beauty and spirit of each place, moving through the seasons and the day from dawn to dusk. With an individual chapter dedicated to each garden, readers will travel to the naturalized woodland at Winterthur, the Beaux-Arts elegance of Nemours, the striking ruins atop ruins of the Crowninshield Garden at Hagley, and the picturesque native plant gardens and scenic trails of Mt. Cuba Center.
About the Authors
Following a successful career in corporate law, Larry Lederman turned to photography as an avocation. From an initial focus on the forms and foliage of trees, Lederman now captures the beauty of gardens and landscapes through the seasons. He is the author of many books, including Magnificent Trees of the New York Botanical Garden, The Rockefeller Family Gardens: An American Legacy, and Garden Portraits: Experiencing Natural Beauty, all published by Monacelli, and the principal photographer for the 125th anniversary edition of The New York Botanical Garden (Abrams).
Marta McDowell is a garden historian and writer whose books include Emily Dickinson’s Gardening Life, Unearthing the Secret Garden, and Beatrix Potter’s Gardening Life. She teaches landscape history and horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden and is a featured speaker at garden clubs and horticultural organizations.
Charles A. Birnbaum, FASLA, FAAR, founder, president, and CEO of The Cultural Landscape Foundation, is the editor of Experiencing Olmsted, a survey of parks and public spaces.

Visit historic Newlin Grist Mill on Saturday, October 7, 2023 from 10am to 4pm to experience the site’s annual Fall Harvest Festival, back this year for the first time since 2019. A local favorite, this event provides fun for the whole family!
The festival will feature a variety of historic skills and trades demonstrations, as well as fun activities for kids of all ages. Visitors can learn colonial dancing with the Heritage Dancers, enjoy performances by Tuckers’ Tales Puppet Theatre, and play 18th-century games! Many favorite activities from years past will be returning, including pumpkin painting and hayrides. A Colonial Market will offer up handcrafted goods for sale, and a Tavern will feature beverages from Deer Creek Malthouse and Penns Woods Winery.
This year’s theme, “Food Traditions Past and Present,” will highlight foods and cooking from the 18th century, along with the trades that made it possible to put food on the table in early America. Food trucks will also be on site offering delicious 21st-century eats!
Admission to the Fall Harvest Festival is free for all ages. Parking is $5 per car. Shuttle buses between the parking area and the festival site will run every 15 minutes throughout the event. A Noisy Mind' is a solo show featuring new works by multidisciplinary artist ADHD (aka Colin Frangicetto aka Space Case). If there was one word to sum up the theme of this exhibition it would be overwhelm and that is surely very much by design. Through a variety of mediums and aesthetics the artist seeks to make the audience step inside of his post internet world which is made up of the broken synapses of neurodivergence, an ever present ringing of the ear and the haunted memories of a life spent on the road.
There is a quiet/loud dynamic at play here in the art much akin to the music he spent over half of his life creating. Chaotic and violent feeling de-collage pieces are balanced by soft overpainted personal photographs . Large, expressive figurative paintings on canvas with gestural marks and scrawl are offset by smaller minimal abstract works on paper. The works feel as if they are all either whispering or shouting : This is what it is like for me to exist right now. This is how I got here, this is where I am and I have no idea where I am going. By the way, how are you?
Among some of the more experimental works in the show is 'Constant Companion' which is simply an iPod mounted to a pure white painting on wood that plays the tone of the artist's tinnitus on an infinite loop in headphones for anyone to listen. Distortion pedals are likewise painted and mounted to panels like historical war relics along with decades of stolen hotel key cards collaged in overlapping grids. Oversized xeroxed photographs of Xanax & Adderall medication bottles are covered with thousands of meaningful markings; one for every day since they were prescribed. Ironically for an artist currently known prominently for still digital paintings, the only digital works in the show are small looping videos made of text and screen captures.
While the description of all of this can sound dark and perhaps anxiety inducing there is a consistent sense of levity and tender self awareness that seeks to draw you closer & hold your hand through the scary bits. Like a life-saving laughing fit at the peak of a bad acid trip, sometimes joking our way through our most difficult moments is the best way to survive them.

Established in 1999, First State Ballet Theatre (FSBT) is Delaware's leader in ballet performance, training, education and outreach. Returning to Kennett Square on Sunday, October 22nd, the award-winning Clover Market brings
together the best of handmade and vintage artistry, delicious local food, and live music. Janet
Gardner Long, founder of Clover Market, shares the origins of this fantastic event, a little bit
about herself, and how it has become a Kennett bi-annual mainstay.
An Accessible High Quality Popup Event
Clover Market sprouted its roots in the spring of 2010 as a passion “side project” for Janet
Gardner Long, who lived in Ardmore at the time. Long envisioned as an outdoor popup event
that would seamlessly combine antiques, handcrafted items, and artistry. “While there were
higher end art shows around and flea markets of course,” shared Long, “there wasn’t anything
at the time that had a combination of all of these types of items at a high quality level—but still
price accessible.” After a rigorous approval process, the market received the green light and
made its debut in Ardmore with 25 vendors. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and
Clover Market quickly expanded to include locations in Chestnut Hill, Bryn Mawr (which
replaced Ardmore when the customer parking lot was developed), Collingswood, and eventually
Kennett Square. Today, the market boasts 90-100 vendors at each location, alongside food
trucks, live music, and community partners, making it a vibrant, must-visit destination for all, and
has won many Best of Philly and Best of Main Line awards, most recently winning the accolade
of Best of Philly’s “Best Use of a Sunday Afternoon.”
Long is the driving force behind this “scrappy one-woman business,” and she brings an
entrepreneurial spirit to the venture. Her professional background encompasses a wide range of
skills, including advertising, marketing, design, and project management. Clover Market
provided her with an opportunity to blend these diverse talents and feed her love for learning
and connecting people—which is all palpably experienced to attendees and vendors alike.
The Kennett Square Connection
The journey of Clover Market to Kennett Square was orchestrated by Tara Dugan, founder of
worKS, who saw the potential in bringing the market to our charming borough. Tara had
previously been a vendor at Clover Market under a different name, Scout and Annie, and her
local roots gave her unique insights into Kennett Square’s community. After getting the green
light from Genesis, the property’s owner at the time, and Kennett Collaborative, the market
made its Kennett Square debut in late June 2017. These days, with worKS being only two
blocks from the current Clover Market site, many patrons choose to visit both locations to
complete the afternoon.
Now, Clover Market has become a fixture in the Kennett Square community, with two events
taking place each year. Long, now lives nearby, and is enjoying its open and welcoming charm
to the fullest. “I love that open land preservation is valued here as are the arts,” says Long. “It’s
really a special place.” She and her husband, now empty nesters, are taking full advantage of
their new home, exploring local hiking trails, trying out new restaurants, and participating in
community events that the town is so well-known for. Notably, Long mentioned how “many great
events there are locally and how much everyone comes out to support them!”
Upcoming Market Delights (including two mini-trucks)!
The October 22nd Clover Market promises to be an exciting event, with over 100 vendors
showcasing their wares from 10 am until 4 pm at 600 S. Broad Street. As you embark on your
holiday shopping and decorating journey, make sure not to miss two delightful mini-trucks from
Vellum St. Soap Company and May With Love Knits, together on-site for the first time. Check
out the full list of vendors here. Additionally, Braeloch Brewing and Grace Winery will be serving
beer and wine respectively, Calabrese Arts will provide face painting for the little ones, and the
talented local musicians Paul Wilkinson & Luke Ferracone will entertain the crowd from 12-3
pm. Our tip: get there early for the opening bell, a lovely Market tradition, and to snatch up those
unique finds first!
In conclusion, the Clover Market is not just a market; it’s a celebration of artisanal
craftsmanship, community, and the creative spirit. As the market continues to thrive, it remains a
testament to the power of entrepreneurial spirit, community support, and the enduring charm of
Kennett Square.
This Market will feature 100+ carefully curated vendors with a wide variety of handmade and vintage goods along with food trucks, live music, beer and wine, free kids' crafts, and many additional shopping and dining options in town.
The Market vendors will be set up in the entire parking lot at 600 S. Broad Street, right across from Kennett High School. The entire lot will be closed for the Market. The Market is just a very short walk drive from the downtown shopping and restaurant district and close to additional dining options and activities on Birch Street.

West Chester University is hosting a free one-day STEM Workshop. Super Science Saturday is for girls in grades 6 - 12 to spend the day with women scientists doing hands-on experiments and talking about careers.

As our Centennial year continues, we would like to invite the entire UCFSD community to our Open House at Unionville Elementary School (1775 W. Doe Run Road, Kennett Square, PA) on Saturday, November 4, from 9am to 12pm. When our district opened in 1923, the school served all students K-12. The event will provide an opportunity for our community to see the school building where it all started back in 1923! Attendees will be able to tour the school and explore the rich history within its walls. Notably, the original auditorium and gymnasium will give guests a glimpse into the district’s past. Items from early days of the district will be on display for visitors to learn from and enjoy. This includes, but is not limited to art, blueprints, old uniforms, photos, programs, and yearbooks. Additionally, an exhibit with information about the formation of the district from the one-room school houses will tell the story of how our district was created. Attendees also will have the chance to enjoy light refreshments and hear remarks from local historians and district leaders. Junior League’s Whale of a Sale Promises Amazing Deals
Calling all treasure hunters, upcycling aficionados, fashionistas, and bargain-hunting parents looking for a great deal! Whale of a Sale – Delaware’s Largest Garage Sale – returns on Saturday, November 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Concord Mall (old Hollister and Zumiez storefronts). The much-anticipated sale has been a time-honored fundraiser for the Junior League of Wilmington (JLW) since 1980.
The 2023 Whale of a Sale will feature an expanded boutique area, with an array of high-quality and designer items including brand-new clothing, accessories, formalwear, and bridal gowns contributed by local businesses. Fabulous finds can also be found in the holiday department, children’s clothing and toys, equipment & sporting goods, housewares, art, and more! There will also be a small furniture section that includes gently used items such as coffee and end tables, office chairs and more.
Generations of Whale of a Sale shoppers eagerly anticipate the Sale, and thousands are expected to attend this year. Proceeds benefit the JLW’s mission of developing the leadership potential of its Members and the League’s current community focus, Stand Up. Period. This initiative focuses on menstrual equity in Delaware and aims to ensure affordable access to period supplies.
