Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce to Host Annual Inspirational Breakfast May 4 at Hartefeld National Golf Club
Keynote Speaker is Award-winning Paralympic Athlete Amanda McGrory
Kennett Square, PA - The Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Inspirational Breakfast Thursday, May 4, beginning at 7:30 am at Hartefeld National Golf Club. The keynote speaker is Amanda McGrory, award-winning wheelchair athlete who will present Go for the Gold: My Quest for Success, which shares her story and discovery of wheelchair athletics, and highlights from her award-winning athletic career that has taken her around the world.
The Inspirational Breakfast welcomes business and community leaders from across the region. The fee is $45 for Members and $55 for Non-Members. Visionary Tables are available for $375. To register, visit www.scccc.com.
The event includes a coffee reception at 7:30 am with Reception Sponsor, WSFS Bank, followed by a sit-down breakfast and program at 8:30 am. Special guests include Leon R. Spencer, the Chamber’s 2016 Outstanding Citizen of the Year, who will perform The National Anthem.
Southern Chester County native Amanda McGrory woke up one morning at the age of 5 and discovered she could no longer walk. After weeks of hospital visits and testing, doctors’ best diagnosis was Transverse Myelitis, with little hope of recovery. At age 7, McGrory attended a Variety Club of Philadelphia sleep away camp designed for kids with physical disabilities. That, combined with the later discovery of wheelchair sports, proved to be life-changing. McGrory graduated from Unionville High School with honors, and accepted an athletics scholarship to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a dual sport athlete to play wheelchair basketball and race as a member of track and road racing team. Since graduating with a BS in Psychology, she has traveled the world, and won seven Paralympic medals and more than 25 marathons. Currently, she is pursuing a master degree in Library and Information Science, with a focus on Archival Work from the University of Illinois. In addition, Amanda competed in the London Marathon on Sunday, April 23rd and she is in training for one final Paralympic Games in Tokyo 2020.

Grand Opening Oxford Arts Alliance
Art Annex and Open House
The Oxford Arts Alliance is expanding and is opening an Art Annex at 19 South Third Street in Oxford. This new location will house the popular Paint Your Own Pottery as well as future art classes.
The Grand Opening is scheduled for May 5, First Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. The ribbon cutting will be at 6 pm and throughout the evening, stop in for a drawing for Paint Your Own Pottery Party for 4 people and give aways.
The Art Annex will be open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The expanded summer hours Thursday, Friday and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. will begin June 15.
Additionally on May 6th - The Oxford Arts Alliance will host an open house from 10 am to 2 pm. Fundraiser to rebuild from storm damage to green house
On Saturday, March 25th volunteers to helped take down our damaged green house and prep for repairs. This is the first step to rebuild the green house and ordering parts.
Damages are roughly $8000 and we have crops to be planted in the next three weeks. We are the last working farm around at over 308 years old. Our farm market is what keeps the farm working but we need your support to rebuild.

Learn the latest secrets in dinosaur research at the Delaware Mineralogical Society's May 8 meeting, featuring Dr. Ken Lacovara of the Jean and Ric Edelman Fossil Park at Rowan University in Mantua Township, N.J. Dr. Lacovara will talk about Dreadnoughtus and other dinosaurs from Patagonia, and new developments at the fossil park. He spoke at the Museum last spring, and his return promises to bring fascinating new insights. Examples of his team's discoveries are currently on exhibit at DMNH.

The meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at Unionville High School, is one of many by Fair Districts PA, a statewide group dedicated to reforming the redistricting process. Gerrymandering is a term used to describe how voting districts are redrawn to benefit those in a particular political party.

3rd Annual Unionville Crew's Spring Fundraiser

Proceeds from the first two fundraisers have allowed us to purchase our first two boats and several sets of oars which have been painted with our Unionville colors. Second Annual Kennett Rotary PetFest is coming Saturday May 13 Noon-4 p.m. at Anson Nixon Park in Kennett Square. The event is free admission and is rain or shine. Dogs on leashes are welcome along with cats in appropriate carriers.
PetFest this year will feature Lefty’s Fuzzy Butts Doggie 1k Walk, sponsored by Terry Lynn’s Pet Sitters. Lefty’s Walk starts at 2pm and costs $20 with registration at Eventbrite. Medals, T-Shirts and swag bags will bear available for fits 50 entrants.
Lefty’s Walk is a fun stroll through the woods of the park for dogs and their human companions. Water Bowls will be placed along the route. Last year over 100 dogs walked in a light drizzle. Proceeds for Lefty’s Walk will go to La Mancha Animal Rescue.
We will also feature Bob’s Critters Exotic Animal Show. Bobs has been showing animals for over 30 years. The shows will run continuos fro 1pm to 3pm. Attendees will be able to handle a variety of snakes lizards and a tarantula.
Bob’s Critters manager Mike Buleza says ”I will bring a variety of snakes, a bearded dragon, a blue tongue skink, a variety of geckos, turtles, a toad, a tarantula and hissing cockroaches. All of my animals are safe to touch and hold. I am an elementary school teacher who enjoys sharing my animals with others. I will set up a table with my critters on display and invite the children to touch and hold them if they choose to. Children of all ages really enjoy interacting with my critters. I have shared my fascinating animals at many community programs. I guarantee the children and adults will enjoy their experience.”
Pet Psychic Laurie Blomer will be on hand to help people communicate with their living or deceased pet. Laurie says "As an animal communicator, or “pet psychic,” Laurie can help you communicate with your pets — both living and deceased — to better understand their thoughts, behaviors, and needs.She also teaches workshops to help people learn how to communicate with animals. Laurie will be giving pet readings at this year's PetFest. Come find out what your pets are thinking!

Unionville Presbyterian Church Concert to Aid Homeless Families
Family Promise of Southern Chester County Selected as Beneficiary
Residents, visitors, family and friends are invited to enjoy the harmonious sounds of the Unionville Presbyterian Church Choir, directed by William E. Johnson, at a special benefit concert to support Family Promise of Southern Chester County on Saturday, May 13, beginning at 6 p.m. The concert is free, open to the public and will be held at Unionville Presbyterian Church located at 815 Wollaston Road, in Kennett Square. A dessert reception will follow the concert.
Family Promise of Southern Chester County, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families with children experiencing homelessness, was selected as the recipient of all donations raised during this special choral concert featuring traditional and contemporary music.
Unionville Presbyterian Church, a founding member of Family Promise of Southern Chester County, is part of a community network of 27 congregations that provide overnight accommodations, meals and companionship to families in the Family Promise program.
“We’re a small church with a big heart,” explained Reverend Annalie Korengel, pastor of Unionville Presbyterian Church. “Family Promise is a small organization making a huge impact in the community. We are honored to partner with Family Promise because every child deserves a home.”
Susan Minarchi, executive director of Family Promise of Southern Chester County commented, “Unionville Presbyterian Church was a driving force behind creating the vision for Family Promise and turning that vision into a reality. This seasonal, sit-down pairing will feature four gourmet mini cupcakes from The Sweetest Rose, paired alongside your favorite, flavorful Chaddsford wines.
Tickets are $20/person and various seating times are available:
- Friday, May 12 at 1:30pm, 3pm, 4:30pm, and 6pm
- Saturdays, May 6 + 13 at 12pm, 1:30pm, 3pm, 4:30pm, and 6pm
- Sundays, May 7 + 14 at 12pm, 1:30pm, 3pm, and 4:30pm
Free CPR classes are being offered

Two classes will be given on Monday, May 15, 2017
Longwood Fire Company is offering two free CPR classes on Monday, May 15, 2017, at the station.
The EMS staff will be conducting the hands only CPR classes at 4:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. The station is located at 1001 East Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square. The classes are open to the public and are free. Registering for the class is recommended but not necessary. To register, call Lori Kaluzny, Longwood Business Manager, at 610 388-6880.
