Wyeth and Watercolor lecture at the Brandywine River Museum
Tuesday, September 12, join us at 6 p.m. for a captivating presentation on Andrew Wyeth's masterful use of watercolor, including his early work and the influence of Winslow Homer.
The lecture will be presented by Kathleen Foster, The Robert L. McNeil, Jr., Senior Curator of American Art, and Director, Center for American Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This will be the one of the final lectures for our Andrew Wyeth: In Retrospect exhibition, which closes September 17.

How did Colonists prepare for the hard, winter months? During September’s Tavern Talks we'll be exploring the various ways Colonists planned for the winter, such as preserving foods, sewing and spinning, candle-making and more! Guest demonstrators for the evening include herb drying and preservation with Terra Luna Herbals, cheese preparation with Amazing Acres Goat Dairy, spinning wool with Greenbank Mills & Philips Farm, beekeeping with Brandywine Bee Company, and learning about the power of vinegar with Keepwell Vinegar.
Tavern Talks is a monthly experience (not a lecture!) aimed exclusively for adults 21 and older that focuses on unexplored aspects of early American history and culture. Guests will experience history with hands-on activities, food and drink tastings, demonstrations, and more. Tavern Talks takes place at the Chadds Ford Historical Society’s Barns Brinton House, an historic 1714 tavern, located next to the Chaddsford Winery at 630 Baltimore Pike. Admission is $20 for non-members and $15 for members. Tickets must be purchased in advance over the phone, in person or online as space is limited. All attendees must be 21 and older.

The Plantation Field International Horse Trials is a thrilling time for our area and horse enthusiasts from all across the region to have the top event horses and riders in the country come to Unionville to compete.
This festival features a full day of hands-on activities. Visitors will be able to work with professional archaeologists and assist with three different excavations; sift, clean and process artifacts; and see artifact displays from around Delaware County. Hundreds of Re-enactors to Demonstrate the Largest Land Battle of the Revolutionary War for a
FREE Event Takes Place September 16th & 17th, 2017.
2017 marks the 240th anniversary of the Battle of Brandywine, the largest land battle of the Revolutionary War. Hundreds of authentically-dressed re-enactors will again descend upon Birmingham Township, Chester County on Saturday, September 16th and Sunday, September 17th, 2017 to recreate this historic confrontation between British and American soldiers at Sandy Hollow** – the site where the actual September 11, 1777 battle took place. The event is FREE to the public; hours on Saturday are 10 AM to 4 PM, and on Sunday from 10 AM to 3:00 PM; free parking is available. The event is being presented and organized by Birmingham Township.
During the re-enactment, visitors will witness active cavalry, cannon fire, muskets, rifles, side arms, authentic encampments and military inspections. The battles, scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday will last about 45 minutes to an hour. Several historical figures including George Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette, and Alexander Hamilton will be attending

Tour the American and British camps;
Hear the fife and drum corps;
Sample period food;
Meet authors of period fiction and non-fiction; and
Play games, SHOP, and much more.

“We held our first re-enactment in the spring of 2014 and it was a resounding success so it was only natural to bring it back for the 240th anniversary,” said Linda Kaat, chairperson of Brandywine 2017. “Birmingham Township is once again thrilled to be able to offer a re-enactment on the actual site where the battle took place, something that is extremely rare. Visitors will be walking in the footsteps of thousands of brave revolutionary men who fought valiantly here, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice so that our country could be independent.”
An estimated 26,000 British and American soldiers met at Sandy Hollow on the afternoon of September 11, 1777. The night would end in an American retreat. Though this was a loss, this particular fight served to fortify the colonists’ resolve to ultimately defeat the Redcoats in another four years at Yorktown. In a nod to historical accuracy, the British will win again on Saturday. However, Sunday’s battle will end in a British rout, just for fun.

– Join Canine Partners for Life (CPL) for our annual Open House and Cow Bingo on Saturday, September 16 from 1 to 5 pm at a new location (Manor Presbyterian Church, 505 Street Road, Cochranville, PA). Round up the entire family for an afternoon of free fun to discover how service and companion dogs change the lives of individuals with disabilities.
“The Open House is my favorite CPL event,” said Darlene Sullivan, CPL Founder and Executive Director. “It is a great opportunity to share our mission with the community – those who love dogs, those who have an interest in the world of disabilities, and those who are just touched by the human/animal bond.”
Visitors will be given a passport to travel through all aspects of CPL’s mission. At the service dog demonstration area, you can watch the dogs demonstrate a variety of skills including tugging jackets off, retrieving dropped objects, carrying items, and paying a cashier. At the “Life with a Service Dog” booth you can meet CPL recipients and hear their inspiring stories firsthand.
As you make your way through the passport, don’t miss the popular “Puppy Kissing” booth for all the puppy snuggles and smooches you can handle! There are also opportunities to shop from local vendors, listen to live music, enjoy a BBQ lunch (while supplies last), play kids’ games, and more! Even though we will be off-site this year, you can take a quick shuttle up the road to tour our kennel and the construction of our new Marian S. Ware Program Services Center.
The day wouldn’t be complete without our ever-popular Cow Bingo! Cow Bingo is a game of chance that pits your luck against the cow “doo”ing her thing. If the cow heeds the call of nature on your square, you are the lucky winner of $5,000! Tickets are $10 each. Squares are randomly assigned and chances are 1 in 3,000. The cow will be released at 4:00pm. Tickets sold out last year so purchase your tickets before it’s too late! Tickets can be purchased online here or by calling 610-869-4902 ext.225. Winner does not need to be present to win.
