This pane of 12 Forever stamps celebrates the centennial of the birth of Andrew Wyeth (July 12, 1917 – Jan. 16, 2009), one of the most prominent American artists of the 20th century. Working in a realistic style that defied artistic trends, Wyeth created haunting and enigmatic paintings based largely on people and places in his life, a body of work that continues to resist easy or comfortable interpretation.
This issuance includes stamps that each features a detail from a different Andrew Wyeth painting. The paintings are: “Wind from the Sea” (1947), “Big Room” (1988), “Christina’s World” (1948), “Alvaro and Christina” (1968), “Frostbitten” (1962), “Sailor’s Valentine” (1985), “Soaring” (1942–1950), “North Light” (1984), “Spring Fed” (1967), “The Carry” (2003), “Young Bull” (1960), and “My Studio” (1974). The selvage, or area outside of the stamp images, shows a photograph of Wyeth from the 1930s. Art director Derry Noyes of Washington, DC, designed the pane.

Art & Antiques removed from Big Bend, The Estate of George "Frolic" Weymouth
George “Frolic” Weymouth was a skilled artist, a dedicated philanthropist and conservationist, and a source of good humor to those who knew him. Weymouth passed away in 2016 and Pook & Pook, Inc. is pleased to present a special summer auction on the evening of Friday, July 14th featuring antiques and art removed from his farm, Big Bend, in Chadds Ford. The sale features one hundred and twenty-five items used to furnish and decorate the period home, and will follow a reception at Pook & Pook, Inc’s Downingtown gallery.
Weymouth was born in 1936 to George Weymouth and Dulcinea (née du Pont) Weymouth and spent the majority of his life living in the Brandywine Valley. He is best known for his vibrant personality, artwork, and conservation efforts, including founding the innovative Brandywine Conservancy and Brandywine River Museum of Art. His artwork, created over a six-decade career, included several celebrated portraits, landscapes, and flower studies, many of which reside in the collections of top American museums. Frolic studied the use of egg tempera with good friend and neighbor Andrew Wyeth and maintained a close connection with the Wyeth family, reportedly even hiding Wyeth’s infamous paintings of neighbor Helga Testorf for years before they became public. In the Brandywine Conservancy’s obituary for Weymouth, artist Jamie Wyeth remembers him as “a neighbor and family... He was an immensely talented artist and achieved so much with his work in Chadds Ford, both with land conservation and with the museum. He was truly a force of nature that instilled his passion for art and the environment into all of his many friends, and they opened their hearts and their wallets to his causes. He was the best fund-raiser I ever met.” Pook & Pook, Inc. is thrilled to celebrate Frolic’s legacy and his enduring contributions to the Brandywine Valley and beyond.
Preview for this special event will be held on Wednesday, July 12th and Thursday, July 13th from 10:00am-4:00pm and on auction day, Friday, July 14th, from 10:00am- 6:00pm. Pook & Pook, Inc. will also offer a complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres reception prior to the sale from 5:00pm-6:00pm. Please RSVP to [email protected] should you be interested in attending. Bidders are encouraged to contact Pook & Pook, Inc. at [email protected] or (610) 269-4040 with questions regarding condition reports or online, in-house, phone or absentee bidder registration. Catalogs can also be viewed online at www.pookandpook.com or Bidsquare.com. The auction begins at 6:00pm EST on Friday, July 14th.

The Winterthur Library’s collection of autochromes, the first industrially produced color photographs, provides horticulturists with a valuable glimpse into Mr. du Pont’s early design aesthetic. In particular, their portrayal between 1910 and 1921 of a lavish, formal flower garden at Winterthur is particularly priceless in that this garden no longer exists today. Join Assistant Curator of Education Erica Anderson for a sampling of historical images picturing this lost garden and then go on-site to investigate the garden’s original location and see remnants from its colorful past.
