Immerse yourself in Kuerner Farm, a source of inspiration for Andrew Wyeth for over 70 years, and a featured property on the National Register of Historic Places, with an art class led by Karl J. Kuerner. As the grandson of two of Andrew Wyeth’s best-known subjects and a student of Carolyn Wyeth, Karl’s personal experiences with the farm provide special insight into the property and its rich history. Participants will provide art materials of their own choosing, and should dress appropriately for working outdoors. Class size is limited to allow for individual instruction.

The Chadds Ford Historical Society hosts the 43rd Annual Great Pumpkin Carve on October 18-20, 2018. The Great Pumpkin Carve is the quintessential Brandywine Valley experience, and is a great way to get in the Halloween spirit.
The Great Pumpkin Carve was started by artists Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth and Jimmy Lynch in the 1970s to decorate the Chadds Ford Inn for Halloween. The event has grown each year, and is now an autumn tradition for thousands of people. This family-friendly festival features 70 local artists competing by carving huge pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns on Thursday night. The pumpkins, which may weigh as much as 400 pounds, will be lit and displayed at the end of the carving on Thursday, and illuminated again on Friday and Saturday nights. Pumpkins are judged and winners declared in several categories: Best Overall, Most Halloween, Best Carving, Most Original and Best Use of Pumpkin.
In addition to the amazing pumpkins, the Great Pumpkin Carve offers entertainment for adults and children alike including live music, raffle prizes, hayrides, pumpkin painting and other fun activities. This year we are enlarging the pumpkin patch to provide more room and easier viewing of the pumpkins, adding more admissions lines to reduce waiting time, bringing back and expanding the Haunted Trail and featuring local wine, beer and cider vendors in addition to great local food.
The Great Pumpkin Carve is held on the grounds of the Chadds Ford Historical Society, 1736 N. Creek Road, Chadds Ford, PA 19317. Admission is $15 for adults; $5 for children; free for children 6 and under. CFHS members are free with membership card. All ticketing is at the gate. Free parking is available at the event. Join us at the American Helicopter Museum on Friday October 19 for a day of hands-on learning designed for home schoolers. Between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM, the American Helicopter Museum & Education Center will offer a series of educational programs conducted by the National Archives and Records Administration, the Delaware Museum of Natural History, the National Iron & Steel Heritage Museum, the Chester County Historical Society, and the Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union. Organizations will offer 45 minute educational programming designed for children in grades k-6 and will host tables presenting information about their educational resources. In addition, Sister Bear from the Berenstein Bears will be in attendance!

Pop Up Art KSQ was founded in 2017 by Caroline Roosevelt, Caitlin Kelley and Aaron Morgan. “For Roosevelt, launching a pop-up art tour sprang out of her time living in Seattle's trendy Capitol Hill section, an enclave of indie-chic bars, eateries and clubs. Attend a Marching Band Competition for Fall Family Fun! Unionville High School Hosts “March on the Brandywine” Saturday, October 20, 2018, 6pm
A crisp fall evening is the perfect time to get out with the family to enjoy music, pageantry and fun! Unionville High School invites you to the “March on the Brandywine” marching band competition on Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 6pm to 10pm.
This event features the area’s best high school musicians and color guard squads in friendly competition – it’s like one exciting halftime show after another! Judges from the Cavalcade of Bands, Inc. will rate the precision, creativity, musicality and complexity of the performances. The ten participating high schools are: Lindenwold, Clayton, Chichester, Big Spring, Downingtown East, Coatesville, Upper Darby, Penn Wood, Marple Newtown and Kennett. When the competing bands are finished, the Unionville High School Marching Band will treat the audience to a performance of its 2018 show, “Wonderful World” and is thrilled to perform for the community audience.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, free for ages 5 and under. Food, including our famous hand-cut, fresh – never frozen! – band fries, will be available for purchase, along with programs and music-related items. Fun for all ages!

BACKGROUND: The Cavalcade of Bands Association is a regional circuit which brings together student musicians from across the Mid Atlantic in Saturday competitions in the fall. Bands are divided into categories based on the size of the band and are judged in the following categories: Music, Visual, Overall Effect, Drum Major, Auxiliary (Color Guard) and Percussion. All bands are given a final score and awards are distributed at the end of all performances. At the end of the season a Championship competition is held in Hershey, PA.

Local architectural historian Jane Dorchester will lead us on a unique tour of significant historical sites that are right in your backyard, including two structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places! Beginning at the historic Chandler Mill bridge, we will follow the rugged trail along Bucktoe Creek to Bucktoe Cemetery, the final resting place of several Civil War Colored Troop veterans. We will then continue on to the ruins of the Wiggins House (c. 1840) and end with the Chandler Mill complex as we explore the area’s history of agriculture and industry.
Please note that we will be following intermediate, natural trails that include rugged stream crossings and uneven terrain.

The Hickman Friends Senior Community of West Chester is excited to host the first Dine Around West Chester event on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. For that one day, Barnabys West Chester, The Mediterranean Restaurant, Rams Head Bar & Grill, Side Bar & Restaurant, and Spence Cafe will donate 25% of their food sales to The Hickman.
“We just need people to not prepare lunch or dinner on October 23rd, but instead make plans with family, friends and colleagues to eat at one of the participating restaurants,” says Charles “Ebbie” Alfree III, Advancement Director of The Hickman. “This is going to be a fun event that will highlight the exceptional restaurants in the Borough of West Chester, while raising awareness and funds for The Hickman.”
Funds raised through Dine Around West Chester will support The Hickman’s Resident Assistance Fund. The Fund provides assistance to residents who have depleted their financial resources, allowing them to remain in their home with their friends and The Hickman’s caring staff. For 127 years, no resident has had to leave The Hickman due to a financial situation.
“Restaurant guests will feel good knowing they are helping the senior population in the borough as they enjoy a scrumptious meal,” comments Mr. Alfree. “In addition, guests will have the opportunity to win wonderful prizes that night, including gift cards to the participating restaurants and a basket of cheer. It will be free to enter the contests, but donations are appreciated.”
ARTZ Philadelphia joins with Brandywine to offer this popular program which welcomes a small group of visitors with dementia and their care partners to the Museum to view and discuss art in a supportive setting. ARTZ Philadelphia was founded on the belief that people living with dementia should be accorded the benefits of well-being and quality of life that others enjoy. The Museum is pleased to partner with ARTZ to provide these cultural and creative opportunities.

Brandywine Conservancy, Natural Lands, and Willistown Conservation Trust are partnering with Pennsylvania Equine Council to offer a one-day Trail Stewardship Workshop with two locations to choose from. This workshop will provide an opportunity for our community to learn sustainable trail layout, construction, maintenance, tool selection, and use. Immerse yourself in Kuerner Farm, a source of inspiration for Andrew Wyeth for over 70 years, and a featured property on the National Register of Historic Places, with an art class led by Karl J. Kuerner. As the grandson of two of Andrew Wyeth’s best-known subjects and a student of Carolyn Wyeth, Karl’s personal experiences with the farm provide special insight into the property and its rich history. Participants will provide art materials of their own choosing, and should dress appropriately for working outdoors. Class size is limited to allow for individual instruction.

Brandywine Conservancy, Natural Lands, and Willistown Conservation Trust are partnering with Pennsylvania Equine Council to offer a one-day Trail Stewardship Workshop with two locations to choose from. This workshop will provide an opportunity for our community to learn sustainable trail layout, construction, maintenance, tool selection, and use. Wind your way through the trails of the Historic Properties of the Brandywine and hear a tale from the past. Then, shake off the scaries with fall-inspired snack foods (and s’mores, of course!), cider, live music and games in the Museum Courtyard.

Get a closer look at trades of the eighteenth century in Newlin’s “History at Work” series. Members of Newlin Grist Mill’s staff, volunteers, and outside artisans will demonstrate their crafts and talk with visitors about how different trades and skills were integral to life in colonial Pennsylvania and to the operation of Newlin Grist Mill. These demonstrations take place on the last Saturday of the month between 10:00am and 3:00pm.
