Brandywine View Antiques

1st one will be April 8th. Starts at 9AM. We will also be hosting, "meet the vendor" Al, the tool guy. Believe it or not, he's in his 80's and has been with us close to 10 years now. He will be here from 11-2. That day as well will be Christine from House of Red doing a "make it and take it" for a small fee. She'll be here from 12-4.

The Chester County Historical Society (CCHS) is widely respected as one of the Commonwealth’s premier history museums and educational centers, playing an important role in history education, cultural diversity and economic impact for the Southeastern Pennsylvania region. In its 35th year, the Chester County Antiques Show is CCHS’s largest community and fundraising event.

Chaired by Francis "Fran" B. Jacobs II. and Chuck & June Piola, the show will be held from April 7-9, 2017 at the Phelps School. The Phelps School in Malvern is a unique facility which features accessibility, spaciousness, and natural light that will create the perfect setting for the vendors and all of their antique items.

The theme of this year’s event is Botany. The show attracts visitors and collectors every year to view its variety of items and furniture. We invite you to support the 35^th annual show by becoming a sponsor of this one-of-a-kind Chester County tradition.

Join us as we explore different aspects of Newlin Grist Mill's unique historical and environmental resources. Get an in-depth look at the site with programs that range from presentations by guest speakers to hands-on workshops. In this session, archaeologist Teagan Schweitzer will discuss how archaeological resources can be combined with documentary evidence to paint a picture of the food culture of the Delaware Valley from 1750 to 1850.

— On Sunday, April 9th Friends Association for Care & Protection of Children will be hosting an Open House at the Emergency Family Shelter from 4.00 pm – 5.30 pm.

Friends Association promotes the independence of families with children by providing shelter, programs and services that prevent and end homelessness in Chester County.  In 2016, Friends Association saved over 124 families and 247children from homelessness.

The Open House is a rare opportunity to see the Emergency Family Shelter, located in the borough of West Chester that helps many local families on their journey to stable housing. Forget the homeless shelters you've seen portrayed in movies and television. This is much different!

On Sunday, April 9th Friends Association for Care & Protection of Children will be hosting their annual “Life is a Cabaret: an Evening of Jazz and Broadway” concert to benefit the families and children at Friends Association located in Chester County at West Chester’s Sprout Music Collective from 5 – 7.30 pm.

Think of a cabaret as a great meal that’s extravagant, prepared with great care, nutritious and good for the soul. During such a meal, one expects balance and variety–savory and sweet, familiar and perhaps unfamiliar with a variety of textures and flavors. The corollary in cabaret is that you want both familiar and unfamiliar songs, both humorous and serious songs, as well as songs of different tempos and styles.

Performing cabaret classics will be: Catherine Friedman, Joshua Graves and Heidi Starr, vocals; John Braceland, guitar; Rob Sparre, keyboard; and Timothy Crawford, pianist.

Somerville Manning Gallery is currently featuring “American Masters Art of the 19th–20th Centuries” and “Protected Land: Celebrating the 50^th Anniversary of the Brandywine Conservancy and the land that they preserve” at their location in Wilmington Delaware. The exhibitions will be on view from April 11 to May 27, 2017. For almost thirty-five years, Somerville Manning Gallery has specialized in paintings by the Wyeth family. The exhibition, American Masters, continues to juxtapose the artworks of N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth with the artists of their respective eras.

The Chadds Ford Historical Society’s 2017 Spring Lecture Series commemorates the 240th anniversary of the Philadelphia Campaign of 1777. This year the series will be covering some fascinating topics that span the entire 1777 campaign:

Present But Not Accounted For: Women at the 1777-1778 Valley Forge Encampment, Dr. Nancy Loane

Over 400 women camped at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78. Dr. Loane's presentation will introduce you to the women who traveled with the Continental Army, those with Washington’s military family, and the wives of the officers, such as Martha Washington, Lucy Knox, and Catharine Greene. Through the women at camp, you’ll discover a Valley Forge encampment that you never knew existed.

Admission to the lectures is free for all CFHS members and $5 for non-members. All tickets are at the door; no advance ticketing is available. Public Archaeology Days invite volunteers to assist our professional archaeologists with site excavation, artifact screening and care. Public Archaeology Days currently center on the tailrace of the 1704 Grist Mill and the Archive, formerly a mid-eighteenth century general store.

Relive Les annés folles (The crazy years) with the “Hot Club” Gypsy Jazz stylings of Hot Bijouxx Thursday April 20th at 8pm at The Kennett Flash in Kennett Square, PA. This talented quartet blends standards of the Jazz Age and Great American Songbook with modern hits to deliver an exciting and unforgettable performance. Gypsy Jazz, samba, French chansons, Great War era blues, and European waltzes take listeners on a musical, time traveling world tour. The quartet is comprised of arresting singer Najwa Parkins, accordion virtuoso Dallas Vietty, Ryan McNeely who channels Django Reinhardt on his archtop guitar, and talented percussionist Kevin Ripley who rounds out the vintage sound.

The Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia based band is a mainstay at many area Jazz venues and festivals. KSQ Jazz and The Kennett Flash are excited to present an evening with Hot Bijouxx as they perform their renowned repertoire as well as premiere new material. Their album, I’ve Found a New Baby was released in April 2013 and garnered them a 2014 Best New Album Nominee at the Lehigh Valley Music Awards.

The 2017 Earth Day Music Event supports two local treasures, Anson B. Nixon Park and The Garage. This year the event is scheduled for Saturday, April 22, 2017 and will be held at the Garage Community and Youth Center, 115 South Union Street in Kennett Square, PA.

The event begins at 4 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m.  The event will provide 6 hours of local music by the following seven bands. Local musicians Jonathan Gibson and Jim McKenzie, Bella Von of Wilmington, DE, Biff McNeil and Paul Wilkinson, The Rose Project, The Rock- O-Jets, Wild Virtu, and Pristine Raeign will all be playing.

The event is a benefit and there is a $15 cover per person and donations accepted to benefit The Kennett Area Park Authority and Anson B Nixon Park. Guests that are over the age of 21 are asked to make an additional donation of $10 or more so they can enjoy beer provided by our beverage sponsor Victory Brewing Company. An ID is required.

“This event began as a music concert for local bands and to celebrate Earth Day it became a way to support our local Anson B. Nixon Park and The Garage Community and Youth Center. This year we have a lot of local talent from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania and Wilmington, Delaware and this event showcases some of our hometown music – We are calling the event a Spring Mix!” according to event organizer Kris Smith.

The Earth Day Music Event is an opportunity for you to help our local Anson B. Nixon Park. Operated by the Kennett Area Park Authority (KAPA), Anson B. Nixon Park is a local treasure offering beautiful trails, picnic areas, tennis, gardening, summer concerts, and more.

A donation will be made to the Anson B. Nixon Park for the development of a Kennett Community Garden and Children’s Garden area that will involve people of diverse backgrounds, cultures and generations. The goal is to create easily access for the community, the gardeners produce nutritious organic food, develop friendships, create opportunities for recreation and exercise, and generate community pride.

A donation will also be made to the Garage Community and Youth Center who is hosting the event at the Kennett location. The organization empowers youth to pursue their potential academically, socially, and spiritually.

After 10 successful years serving students in the Kennett community, The Garage opened a second center in West Grove. Between the two centers, more than 400 students pass through our doors each week for tutoring, mentoring, community service opportunities, computer lab use, youth groups, and enrichment activities.

The American Helicopter Museum and Education Center (AHMEC) will bestow its prestigious Achievement Award during its annual gala fundraiser on Saturday evening, April 22. The museum, located at 1220 American Boulevard, West Chester, will present the prize to German-based evolo GmbH for the successful manned flight of its Volocopter VC200.

Alex Zosel, evolo GmbH’s managing director, made history by piloting the lightweight fiber composite multicopter over a field in Southern Germany last March. The Volocopter, an aerial vehicle designed for urban mobility, was extremely easy to fly due to its innovative flight control.

“The Volocopter employs technology with its 18 rotors powered by electric motors,” explained Bob Beggs, Co-Founder and Chair Emeritus of AHMEC. “It is truly a transformational vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft. The design is simple, safe and green, which offers great potential for future air mobility

“(AHMEC’s) Achievement Award is recognizing the first successful manned flight of the Volocopter on March 30, 2016, but celebrates its unique and innovative design.”

Additionally, this year’s Roaring 20s-themed gala will honor Chief Warrant Officer Larry J. Murphy (Ret), who piloted a CH-47 in the infamous mountainside rooftop landing in Afghanistan, for his 38 years of military service, mostly in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. It will also acknowledge his current employment with Air Methods Corporation as the Aviation Manager and Helicopter Emergency Medical Services pilot for the Lehigh Valley Health Network MedEvac in Allentown, PA.
