Join local historian Roger Arthur as he revisits the capture of Fort Fisher - Jan. 15, 1865 - which effectively closed the last Confederate seaport on the Atlantic Coast. Fisher, an earthen fort situated near the mouth of the Cape Fear River, protected access to Wilmington, NC. Several times the Union had tried to capture the fort but with little success. In January 1865, with General Alfred Terry commanding the army and Admiral David D. Porter commanding the navy squadron, the Union bombarded the Cape Fear Peninsula with over 40,000 rounds of ordinance, invaded above the fort and marched toward it under fierce resistance from the rebels. Chester County's own 97th PA regiment participated in the assault.
History on Tap is a free program that brings history alive in the casual atmosphere of local bars and restaurants. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

Come learn about the life of Dr. King and the history of Chadds Ford. Free activities include a video of King's speeches, refreshments, and kid's crafts.
Tour the Chads House with live beehive bread making: $5 for adults, 12 and under free.The last family to live in the c. 1725 house was the African-American family of Maryann Strand. Guides will lead tours of the small stone mansion that survived almost 300 years and tell about its fascinating history.
A comprehensive health screening event will be held at Media Medical Plaza on Saturday, Jan. 24. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and will feature a continental breakfast. Screenings will include bone density, blood pressure, sleep disorder, glucose/cholesterol, prostate screening and PSA,

The Chester County Fund for Women and Girls is launching a Young Professionals Group on Wednesday, Jan. 28. The kick-off social will be held at 1025 Andrew Drive, Suite 200, in West Chester, from 5 to 7 p.m. Come have fun while networking, learning about philanthropy and community women’s issues, and discussing goals for the group. The opening reception for the "24/7 Project" will be held on Jan. 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the New Gallery at West Chester University. Ceramic artist Rhoda Kahler and photographer Darcie Goldberg collaborated on a 24-hour artistic exploration of Boston, Atlantic City, Washington DC, Baltimore, New York City, Philadelphia and Providence, an odyssey that included their ceramics and photography materials so they could record their impressions. Considered to be among the finest of the Gilbert & Sullivan light-operas, 'Yeomen of the Guard' is a production of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Chester County. It breaks some of the conventions of comic opera without losing the ability to please the audience. This winter the Philadelphia Museum of Art will present Drawn with Spirit: Pennsylvania German Fraktur from the Joan and Victor Johnson Collection, an exhibition featuring bold, bright, and captivating drawings and manuscripts that celebrated important life events among the first European immigrants to settle in Southeastern Pennsylvania in the 18th century. The
exhibition represents the most comprehensive study of the last fifty years to be devoted to fraktur, one of the most iconic forms of American folk art. It celebrates the promised gift to the Museum of more than 230 works from this important collection, and will be accompanied by a landmark publication. The Johnson Collection of rare and exquisite works on paper will more than double the Museum’s distinguished holdings of fraktur, making it among the finest collections of its kind in the United States.
Once a month, Unionville-Chadds Ford Superintendent John C. Sanville hosts an informal session that includes information about the district’s programs, school board actions, curriculum, staff changes and other topics. The first Wednesday of the month, we will have our 18th century dance class. The class is open to all, novice to experienced. There is no fee and you are welcome with or without a partner. The classes run from 7:15 PM to approximately 9:00 PM and we adjourn for a short break and light refreshments midway through the evening. The dress is casual, modern clothing; period garb is definitely not required or encouraged at these lessons.
The classes are held each month at the "Barn" of the Chadds Ford Historical Society. The Barn is located approximately one half mile north of Route 1 at 1736 Creek Road (old Route 100) in Chadds Ford, PA. If you are driving north on Creek Road from Route 1, the Barn is on your left hand side directly across from the John Chad house. You should pass the Barn building, make a left into the parking lot, drive around the back of the building and enter through the large gray double doors between the round stone pillars. Come up the stairs to the main floor and turn right into the large meeting room where we practice.
The class has been taught each month for many years by Laura Bailey to the delight of her many students. Laura makes the trip from Lancaster each month to teach in Chadds Ford. She also teaches similar classes in Carlisle, PA and in New Castle, DE.
Recently the group has been meeting at a local restaurant for an "after dance" drink, dessert or dinner. If your schedule permits, please plan to join us after the dance for a pleasant social hour to unwind at mid-week.

In conjunction with Jamie Wyeth's major retrospective, visit two of the Brandywine River Museum's National Historic Landmark sites that have particular significance to his development as an artist. The N.C. Wyeth Studio, built by Jamie Wyeth's grandfather, is the place where the young artist studied painting with his aunt, Carolyn Wyeth. The Andrew Wyeth Studio is a restored schoolhouse that was the home of Andrew and Betsy Wyeth and their two sons, Nicholas and Jamie. Later, when the entire structure became Andrew Wyeth's studio, the building was the location of Jamie Wyeth's first studio. It is here that the artist painted important works including "Draft Age" and "Portrait of John F. Kennedy." Guided tours leave from the museum on Fridays and Saturdays from Feb. 6 to March 14 at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., weather permitting. Limited tickets for this special experience are available at the museum on the day of the tour and cost $10 in addition to Museum admission ($5 for members).
