The Hadley Memorial Fund is proud to present Scott Weidensaul on Friday, February 7, 8 p.m., at the Kennett High School. He will be lecturing on his book Living on the Wind: Across the Hemisphere with Migratory Birds. All Hadley programs are free and open to the public. For more information please contact: www.Hadleyfund.org, or 610-444-1855.
Born in 1959, he has lived almost all of his life among the long ridges and endless valleys of eastern Pennsylvania, in the heart of the central Appalachians, a landscape that has defined much of his work. His writing career began in 1978 with a weekly natural history column in the local newspaper, the Pottsville Republican in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, where he grew up. The column soon led a fulltime reporting job, which he held until 1988, when he left to become a freelance writer specializing in nature and wildlife. He continued to write about nature for newspapersincluding long-running columns for the Philadelphia Inquirer and Harrisburg Patriot-News.
He wrote Living on the Wind: Across the Hemisphere with Migratory Birds, a Pulitzer Prize finalist; The Ghost with Trembling Wings, about the search for species that may or may not be extinct (like the Ivory Billed Woodpecker); and Of a Feather: A Brief History of American Birding. For his book Living on the Wind: Across the Hemisphere With Migratory Birds, the author took to longtime systematic observation, which included the ornithological technique of banding, and observing the birds. The author also talked to various experts—as well as amateur birders and ornithologists who have made many of the important discoveries about bird biology.
In another of his works, Mountains of the Heart: A Natural History of the Appalachians, Weidensaul covers the geological changes that have happened to the Appalachians. He traces the mountains' geological origins from the Ice Ages through the diversity and richness of pre-Columbian and Colonial days on up to the modern era.
Weidensaul's writing has appeared in publications including Smithsonian, the New York Times, Nature Conservancy, National Wildlife and Audubon. In addition to writing about wildlife, Weidensaul is an active field researcher whose work focuses on bird migration. Besides banding hawks each fall (something he's done for nearly 25 years), he directs a major effort to study the movements of northern saw-whet owls, one of the smallest and least-understood raptors in North America. He is also part of a continental effort to understand the rapid evolution, by several species of western hummingbirds, of a new migratory route and wintering range in the East.
His newest book, The First Frontier: The Forgotten History of Struggle, Savagery and Endurance in Early America, will be published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

A Study in the Paradox of Greatness"
Wednesday, February 12, 6 p.m.
Abraham Lincoln's contemporaries knew little about this relatively inexperienced candidate when he ran for president—and they had good reason to doubt his abilities. But Lincoln became one of America's best known and most honored leaders. This presentation by Commonwealth Speaker Roger Lane will explore Lincoln's claim on posterity, which rests on his victory in the Civil War as well as on the unique combination of his personal qualities, his historical context and the American imagination. This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council supported in part by National Endowment for the Humanities. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council, a nonprofit organization, inspires individuals to enjoy and share a life of learning. The museum will remain open until 6 p.m., for viewing of N. C. Wyeth’s America in the Making, an exhibition which includes Wyeth’s illustration of Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address. Free for members and included in museum admission.
A social sciences research professor at Haverford College, Lane has been named one of the "Top Ten Profs" in the Philadelphia metropolitan area by Philadelphia Magazine. He has written several prize-winning books and frequently appeared in television documentaries dealing with crime, the history of Philadelphia and the urban African American experience.
