2013 Plantation Field international competition
features Olympic team members
from the United States and Europe
and adds activities for all family members
Downton Abbey is theme of September 20-22 happening in Unionville
UNIONVILLE _ Members of the United States Olympic Equestrian team, including Boyd Martin and Phillip Dutton of Chester County, will return to participate in the sixth annual three-day Plantation Field International Horse Trials and Country Fair. Two Olympic members from Sweden are also participating.
The three days of Eventing competition, known as the triathlon of the horse world, will take place at picturesque Plantation Field , just outside of Unionville. On Friday, September 20, the Dressage phase will be held and admission is free. The parking fee for the Saturday, September 21 show jumping day and Sunday, September 22 Cross Country Day will be $20. The fee includes admission to the grounds for everyone in the car and a program.
Plantation Field is located at 387 Green Valley Road, Unionville. Competition each day will take place from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. with main events beginning late morning each day. The shops and country fair operation begins at 9:00 a.m. Proceeds benefit the Cheshire Land Preservation Fund, The Barn at Spring Brook Farm, and the Chester County Food Bank.
Besides the Eventing competition and enjoying the spectacular view, spectators will be treated to a country fair. “This is a family-friendly event,” said Katie Walker of Plantation Field’s executive committee. “There will be activities for children, food and shops with equestrian themes. Plantation Field is the perfect venue to spend time with the family.”
Last year a tailgating competition was added and this year the theme will be Downton Abbey after the PBS show from England. “Downton Abbey is widely popular and everyone loves the period costumes and traditions depicted on the show. This is a perfect theme for Plantation Field,” Walker said. “Tailgating is a wonderful tradition. It’s part of the festive atmosphere. We are going to enlist a guest judge and prizes will be awarded. Space is limited, so those interested should contact us.”
Other events include a Chester County craftsmen exhibition, celebrity bareback jumping, and a wine bistro and beer garden all day Saturday and Sunday. Sunday is an exciting day with Cross Country riding, tailgating, and at the lunch break, an antique carriage parade followed by the celebrity bareback jumping contest , where riders jump over a 6 foot wall without a saddle. New this year on the grounds is a wine bistro and beer garden all day Saturday and Sunday.
Eventing is comprised of three varied and challenging phases of competition, including dressage, cross-country jumping and show jumping. Dressage consists of an exact sequence of movements ridden in an enclosed area. Judging is based on balance, rhythm, suppleness and obedience of the horse and harmony with the rider. Cross country includes jumping of fences over a three-mile course and requires both horse and rider to be in excellent physical condition. Show jumping tests the technical jumping skills of the horse and rider.
“Plantation Field is the perfect setting for the Eventing competition,” Walker said. “Chester County is a Mecca for all types of equestrian pursuits. Championship horses have been bred and trained in the county and some of the top riders in all disciplines of riding and jumping have called Chester County home.
Walker added, “We’re expecting large crowds this year. Last year we had more than 4,000 people for the three days of events.”

This is what renown food and wine critic Craig LaBan wrote about our Rosé 2012 in the Philadelphia Inquirer:
"My newest infatuation, though, is the dry rosé from Galer Estate, a fledgling winery from Brad and Lele Galer. Their vines abutting Longwood Gardens were just planted in 2005, and a street sign just went up last month. But winemaker Catrina North is already a name worth remembering. For this rosé, she's collected the vineyard's various red grapes - mostly cabernet franc, with merlot, spicy petit verdot, and cab sauvignon - and vinted them pale-pink and bone-dry. As minerally complex as a balanced blush from the south of France, this may be as close as we get to a taste of Provence on the Brandywine."

2013 AUBURN HEIGHTS INVITATIONAL
HISTORIC AUTOMOBILE DISPLAY
Celebrating "An Era of Elegance"
Saturday, September 28, 12:30 to 4:30
Yorklyn, Delaware We all have aspirations. They may change over time, but there are things that we hope to accomplish and experiences we dream of having. The Auburn Heights Invitational offers a chance for today's generations to step back in time and indulge a few of those aspirations, exploring what life was like during the first half of the 20th century, when the world was alive with new technologies, experiences, and opportunities. Whether you contemplate what it would be like to don a linen duster and goggles as you take a ride in a 1930 Cord L-29 Cabriolet or take the wheel of a 1907 American Underslung Roadster or simply enjoy fine food and wine in the elegant shadow of the 1897 mansion's two towers, there is something for everyone at the Auburn Heights Invitational.
The Auburn Heights Invitational Historic Auto Display debuted in 2012 with an exceptional array of historic vehicles. This year's display presents "An Era of Elegance," reminiscent of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Featuring a spotlight on the Packard Motor Car Company, manufacturer of early American luxury cars, visitors will be dazzled by such automobiles as the 1910 Packard Model 30 Close-Coupled Tourer and 1930 Packard Model 740 Custom Roadster, along with a 1907 Mercedes Landaulet and a 1927 Pierce-Arrow Model 80. More than a celebration of automotive ingenuity and design, the Invitational's array of activities include something for everyone. In addition to such staples as tours of the Auburn Heights Mansion and rides on the Auburn Valley Railroad, attendees will enjoy these highlights on September 28:
- Delicious Food & Drink: Community involvement is vital to the Invitational's success, and visitors can sample delicious fare provided by the Country Butcher Fine Foods Market of Kennett Square and decadent ice cream from Woodside Farm Creamery, along with wine and beer tastings.
- Special Presentations and Exhibits: Few today appreciate the enormous impact that early autos had on Americans' daily lives, including not only the clothing that we wear but the advertisements that surround us. Dr. Blaire Gagnon of the University of Rhode Island will share research by her graduate students, inspired by the Marshall Steam Museum, in her presentation "Fashion, Cars, and Advertisements." Visitors will also enjoy a sneak peak at rare items from Hagley Museum and Library's Z. Taylor Vinson Transportation Collection, not yet available to the public.
- Silent Auction & Raffle to Benefit the Joseph Boxler Education Fund: This year, the Silent Auction and Raffle, featuring behind-the-scenes tours and truly unique items and opportunities, benefit the Joseph Boxler Education Fund, established in 2007 to honor the memory of youth volunteer Joseph Boxler and his love for Auburn Heights. The fund, which supports children's programming at Auburn Heights, remains dedicated to inspiring creativity and ingenuity among new generations.
When asked what makes the event so special, Marshall Steam Museum Executive Director Susan Randolph explained, "This event is so much more than a car show. It offers people a chance to disconnect from their busy lifestyles and immerse themselves in a bygone era. We get to be Daisy Buchanan or Jay Gatsby for the day and enjoy a beautiful afternoon at a magnificent country estate."
ADMISSION
Tickets are $18 in advance or $22 at the gate and include admission to the historic auto display, tours of the 1897 mansion, entry to the Marshall Steam Museum, rides on the Auburn Valley railroad, all special presentations and exhibits, along with a lively silent auction & raffle. See the Special Event Page of the Marshall Steam Museum website for additional details about the event and to purchase tickets online.

I would like to spread the word about my client, Jim Moore. He and I will be speaking at the Unionville Community Fair this weekend, Saturday at 1:00 pm and Sunday at 2:00 pm. We will be in the Wellness tent and will stay after the presentation to answer questions. A brief overview: I'll talk about my car accident and Traumatic Brain Injury diagnosis, I'll talk about how Jim and I met, then Jim will share about having a stroke three years ago at age 56, having diabetes for years, and trying to recover from all of this.
Having a stroke takes away confidence so he's been in "hiding" for three years. Part of what I am working on with him is getting him out of the house to share his story. We've already done a live radio interview, WCHE, which is on my website. Having him speak at the Fair shocked his wife - she didn't think he'd do it. Now, let's see if he'll speak to WIB.
Jim and I have said.....our goal is to touch one person, have just one person change their life so they don't have to go through what he is going through.

It's that time of year again! Throughout the month of October, we will be harvesting our red grapes. This is a fun opportunity for our Galer Estate family and friends to join in on the fun of winemaking!
Decisions about picking grapes are very important and often made on very short notice, so we are giving our favorite people a heads up now with a few instructions. At the time when the decision is made the grapes will be picked, we will be sending out an email with a link to a Signup Genius. When you receive that email, simply sign yourself up in a time slot that works for you and we will see you then! Look for more volunteer emails throughout the month. There are many more to come!
Please click the link to signup for Sunday October 6th http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040E4BADA628AB9-volunteers
We have divided the days into two hour time slots. Please feel free to sign up for more than one slot.
Remember: this is a messy job! Wear work clothes and close-toed shoes. More details can be found on the Signup Genius information page.
Thank you for your continued support and helping make our dreams a reality.
Cheers to you all and Happy Harvest!
