Astral is a nonprofit intensive mentoring program that specializes in developing the early careers of extraordinary classical musicians. Astral concentrates on a small number of rising-star soloists and chamber ensembles with the potential to be change-makers and influencers.

The evening's program includes music composed by Joseph Jongen, Vincent Persichetti, Clancy Newman, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Maurice Ravel. Museum opens at 6 p.m. Performance begins at 7:30 p.m.

October 6 - Kennett symphony Open House and Kennett Square First Friday

Stop by to see the new headquarters of the Kennett Symphony at 206 East State Street when you are enjoying your stroll through the borough for First Friday.

As a community service, Longwood Fire Company is offering free CPR classes and children car seats inspections.

On October 9 Longwood EMS is partnering with Chester County Hospital Penn Medicine to offer hands-on CPR classes. The one-hour classes will be given at 4:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. at Longwood Fire Company, 1001 East Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square.

The class explains causes, prevention, and treatment for sudden cardiac arrest. The ambulance and hospital staff are certified instructors available to teach cardiac compressions. To reserve a spot, go to www.chestercountyhospital.org/wellness or email/call the station.

Longwood Fire Company has achieved Expert status in transporting pediatric patients by ambulance. In August Longwood EMS participated in the Pennsylvania Department of Health Emergency Medical Services for Children Pediatric Voluntary Recognition Program. Longwood was awarded Expert Level, the highest of the five categories. Additional equipment is carried above the state requirements to better serve our children.

Longwood EMS does customized programs, including offering First Aid talks and seminars. These can be customized to fit your groups interest and answer all your questions.

Longwood also offers free car seat inspections and installations. Appointments are required for the 30-minute inspection. The fire company has six certified technicians. Inspections are recommended for new parents and when children move to the next sized car seat. Also, car seats should be replaced when an accident takes place.

“The free services offered by the members of Longwood Fire Company assists members of our community in keeping safe,” said Chief A. J. McCarthy. “This is just a small part of the life-saving services offered by Longwood Fire Company.”

The public will have an opportunity to visit Longwood on October 15 during the company’s annual open house. The open house takes place during Fire Prevention Week which begins October 8.

Tavern Talks is a monthly experience (not a lecture!) aimed exclusively for adults 21 and older that focuses on unexplored aspects of early American history and culture. Guests will experience history with hands-on activities, food and drink tastings, demonstrations, and more.

Tavern Talks takes place at the Chadds Ford Historical Society’s Barns Brinton House, an historic 1714 tavern, located next to the Chaddsford Winery at 630 Baltimore Pike. The Chester County Fund for Women and Girls, a philanthropic and educational nonprofit in Chester County, will be hosting Community Fest 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 14 in Kerr Park, Downingtown. The festival will be held in conjunction with Downingtown Mayor Josh Maxwell’s 5K to End Gender-Based Violence.

The event will feature food trucks, live music, kids’ activities, arts and crafts vendors, and local non-profits eager to share information about how residents can get involved in the local community.

Hosted by Hope Presbyterian Church, Getting to the Heart of Childrearing is one evening seminar based on a talk Dr. Tripp offered to parents at Harvard Business School. Dr. Tripp is an educator, seminar presenter and former pastor who has taught childrearing in every state of the union and some 40 different countries. He is best known for his book and ministry, Shepherding a Child's Heart. This seminar is intended to help parents from all backgrounds shepherd their children's hearts more effectively. Most approaches to parenting focus on managing and controlling behavior. Dr. Tripp’s approach is focused on nurture – on helping the child to understand the motivational factors that push and pull within. This seminar is entertainingly presented, richly illustrated and filled with insights and ideas about how to engage children and deepen their understanding of themselves and others. It will help parents to get to the heart of behavior.

Free presentation about diabetes offered

Diabetes and Your Health will be presented at 5:30 p.m., October 18 at The Hickman in West Chester, Pa.

A free presentation about the prevention and management of diabetes will be held at 5:30 p.m., October 18, at The Hickman Friends Senior Community, 400 N. Walnut St., West Chester, Pa. Doors open, with light refreshments served, at 5 p.m. All are welcome.

More than 100 million Americans are living with diabetes or prediabetes, and Type 2 diabetes  accounts for up to 95 percent of those cases, according to the CDC. People with diabetes are at increased risk of serious health complications.

Understanding its causes and risk factors, and making important lifestyle changes can help make this disease more manageable. Those who have, or whose family member has been diagnosed with diabetes or prediabetes are urged to attend this informative presentation by Janelle Gaj, RD, LDN of Main Line Health at Riddle Hospital. She will answer questions and discuss how diabetics can improve their health and quality of life.

Guest Speaker Kevin Shivers of National Federation of Independent Business to provide PA Legislative Update

Kennett Square, PA . . . The Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Fall Luncheon on Thursday, October 19, beginning at 11 am at Mendenhall Inn in Mendenhall, PA. The keynote speaker is Kevin Shivers, Pennsylvania Executive State Director of the National Federation of Independent Business, who will present a Pennsylvania Legislative update.

As Executive State Director of the National Federation of Independent Business since 2011, Shivers has used his public service experience and political acumen to strengthen the NFIB’s reputation as one of PA’s most influential business organizations.  He has nearly 20 years of experience in the state’s legislative and political process, serving as the NFIB’s chief Pennsylvania lobbyist. Shivers and his team has worked with two Governors and the General Assembly to enact new laws beneficial to small employers. In addition, he directed the NFIB’s efforts to make health savings accounts a permanent and tax-free way for Pennsylvanians to save money to pay for medical expenses, ratified critical changes to Pennsylvania's unemployment and workers' compensation systems, and protected the rights of private property owners by enacting the nation's toughest eminent domain reforms and strengthening zoning notification requirements. Shivers also worked to make landmark changes to the state's procurement process ensuring that small-business owners have an opportunity to compete for government contracts.

With the start of flu season already underway, the Chester County Health Department is offering flu vaccinations at schools and community sites from September through November. Clinics are open to the entire community without an appointment.

An annual flu vaccine is recommended for everyone aged six months and older. “Because the weather is still warm, it is hard to believe that it is already the time of year to think about flu vaccinations,” said Jeanne Casner, Director of the Chester County Health Department. “Now is the best time to plan to protect yourself so you, your family and your neighbors remain healthy.”
