Lend a hand. Plant a tree. Spring has sprung, so the staff at Natural Lands Trust are revving up for two tree planting parties at their Stroud and ChesLen Preserves.
The planting efforts are part of ongoing projects to convert stream-bank areas at the preserves to forest. Streams are healthiest when they are shaded, which is why Natural Lands Trust has planted thousands of trees along waterways that cut through their many nature preserves. Additionally, the trees planted at these two volunteer events will grow up to help prevent erosion and flooding, and they’ll offer great food and shelter for birds and other wildlife while they do all that

Chester County Orphans’ Court seeks guardian program volunteers
Training for volunteers to take place on Thursday, April 6th in West Chester
The Chester County Orphans’ Court is seeking volunteers to serve as its “eyes and ears” by visiting individuals who require guardianship.
The visits by volunteers assist the court in maintaining contact with the any person deemed by the court to be incapacitated. The amount of volunteer time required is flexible, and training for the guardian program includes topics such as individual’s rights, Alzheimer’s disease, and information on public agencies that provide the guardianship services.
“The court appoints a guardian for an individual who is determined to be ‘incapacitated’ within the meaning of the law,” said Judge Katherine Platt, Orphans Court Judge. “The standard for that determination is whether the individual’s ability to receive and evaluate information and communicate decisions is impaired to such a significant extent that he or she is unable to manage his or her financial resources, or meet essential requirements for physical health and safety.”
Anyone interested in becoming part of the Orphans’ Court guardian program is invited to take part in a free training session that will be held on Thursday, April 6, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Chester County Justice Center, 201 W. Market Street, West Chester. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The Battle of Paoli, also called “The Paoli Massacre,” unfolded at midnight on September 20 to 21, 1777. After General George Washington’s defeat at Brandywine on September 11th, his forces retreated toward Philadelphia to regroup, and he ordered General Anthony Wayne to harass the British. But the attempt failed, and the result was the 9th deadliest battle in the American Revolutionary War. Jim Christ is the vice-president of the Paoli Battlefield Preservation Fund.

Over 400 women camped at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78. Dr. Loane's presentation will introduce you to the women who traveled with the Continental Army, those with Washington’s military family, and the wives of the officers, such as Martha Washington, Lucy Knox, and Catharine Greene. Through the women at camp, you’ll discover a Valley Forge encampment that you never knew existed.

Healthy Kids Running Series Spring 2017 registration is now open. Healthy Kids Running Series is designed provide kids with a positive, educational, and fun experience in the world of running. To combat the increasing rates of child obesity in America, this running program that would motivates kids to be healthy and active and provides a fun environment to improve their self-esteem. Races are held on Fridays beginning April 7th, 2017 and continuing for the following Fridays 4/21, 4/28, 5/5, 5/12. Each race begins at 5:30 PM and ends at 6:30 PM. The races are held at the Smithbridge Park beside the Concord Township Rachel Kohl Library, and Garnet Valley Middle School. Registration is $35 per child for a full series, or $10 per individual race.

On Sunday, April 9th Friends Association for Care & Protection of Children will be hosting their annual “Life is a Cabaret: an Evening of Jazz and Broadway” concert to benefit the families and children at Friends Association located in Chester County at West Chester’s Sprout Music Collective from 5 – 7.30 pm.
Think of a cabaret as a great meal that’s extravagant, prepared with great care, nutritious and good for the soul.
