Does the recent growth in trails and walkability have you wondering how to better incorporate some of these elements into your own community? Jeff Olson, an architect and planner, will join us for a lecture on October 29th that will draw on his twenty years of experience with greenways, open space, active living, and alternative
transportation projects. He will incorporate elements from his 2012 book “The Third Mode: Towards A Green Society,” which explores the role of human-powered transportation as a “third mode” of transportation, just as important as highways and mass transit. He has had a diverse career with experience in the public, private, and
non-profit sectors. Jeff is a principal at Alta Planning + Design, whose mission is to create active communities where bicycling and walking are safe, healthy, fun, and normal daily activities.

An Evening with Artist James Welling
and Contemporary Art Curator and Artist Alex Klein
Enjoy a rare opportunity to see an intimate discussion between contemporary artist James Welling and curator Alex Klein exploring Welling’s photographic and creative process during an “In Dialogue” program at the Brandywine River Museum of Art on Thursday, October 29 at 6 p.m. The museum’s current exhibition, Things Beyond Resemblance: James Welling Photographs* features images taken by Welling of places where artist Andrew Wyeth lived and worked in Chadds Ford and in Maine.
In Dialogue is limited to an audience of 30 and will take place in the gallery, among Welling’s works.
James Welling has been questioning the norms of representation since the 1970s. His work centers on an exploration of photography, shuffling the elemental components of the medium to produce a distinctly uncompromising body of work. Welling is also intensely interested in cultural and personal ideas of memory in his work. In opening up the medium of photography for experimentation, James Welling's practice has influenced an entire generation of artists and photographers. Welling’s work has been exhibited widely in the United States and internationally.
Alex Klein, a former student of Welling’s, is The Dorothy and Stephen R. Weber Program Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania. Her exhibitions have included Barbara Kasten: Stages (2015), the first major survey of the artist’s work; and Julia Feyrer and Tamara Henderson: Consider the Belveder (2015).
The 50 photographs in the exhibition explore the influence of one artist upon another across time and media. Welling began the Wyeth series as an examination of Andrew Wyeth’s formative influence on Welling’s career, from his earliest watercolors in the 1960s through his recent photographs. “I realized I had never stopped thinking about Wyeth,” said Welling, “he had become a part of how I see.”
Admission costs $20 (member, $15). Things Beyond Resemblance: James Welling Photographs is on view through November 15.
The Brandywine River Museum of Art features an outstanding collection of American art housed in a 19th-century mill building with a dramatic steel and glass addition overlooking the banks of the Brandywine. "Your Yard, Their Home: Bee and Bird Houses" will be presented by Michele Gandy and Lou Schurter on Sunday, Nov. 1. With the help of ArcGIS technology and Mt. Cuba Center’s ongoing research into habitat restoration, find out which native bees and birds your landscape best supports. Discover how artificial nest boxes provide crucial habitats for these key members of our local ecosystems, then construct one and learn how to properly site and care for it at home. You’ll soon see that your yard becomes their new home.
Enjoy the holidays with a festive, long-lasting magnolia wreath, perfect for indoor or outdoor display, created in this class with Eileen Boyle and Duncan Himmelman. Start by making a circle of native magnolia leaves, embellish it with cones and colorful berries, and finish it with a decorative ribbon. Create an elegant accent piece for your home this season using sustainably harvested native plants. Bring hand pruners and gloves.
"Planting in a Post-Wild World: Designing Plant Communities for Resilient Landscapes" with Thomas Rainer and Claudia West will be the topic of program at Mt. Cuba Center on Wednesday, Nov. 4. We live in an increasingly globalized world where few wild places remain and nature has been relegated to isolated remnants of woodlands and wetlands. Now, more than ever, designers have the opportunity and responsibility to bring wildness and ecological value back into the landscape. This challenge requires a new form of planting design that works with natural principles and marries horticulture with ecology. The instructors, co-authors of Planting in a Post-Wild World, will bring a fresh approach to design, incorporating plant community-based strategies and the use of native plants to achieve the aesthetic and ecological goals of future landscapes.
Wednesday, November 4, 6-8 p.m.American artist and environmentalist Greg Mort will provide a lively lecture highlighting the history and influence of imagery and the role artists play as “Stewards of the Earth.”
