Walk through the Exalted Nature exhibition with Associate
Curator Amanda C. Burdan as she discusses Charles Burchfield’s
painted representations of non-visual aspects of the
landscape. Just as Burchfield “saw” the sounds of nature,
we can “listen” to his watercolors. Free for members and
included with Museum admission.
Sundays, October 19 and November 9 at 2 p.m.
Charles Burchfield immersed himself in classical music,
often listening in his studio and responding to personally
resonant pieces in his paintings. Expressing sound visually
was important to the artist; in 1915 he wrote, “It seems at
times I should be a composer of sounds, not only of rhythms
and colors. Walking under the trees, I felt as if the color made
sound.” Steinway Artist Catherine Marie Charlton will play
a selection of works by composers specifically mentioned
by Burchfield in his journals: Beethoven, Haydn, Brahms
and Sibelius. Free for members and included in Museum
admission.
There will be a Veterans’ Day memorial ceremony Sunday, Nov. 9 at the Concord Township American Hero Memorial on Smithbridge Road across from the Rachel Kohl Memorial. Beginning at 3 p.m. There will be a brief presentation with a changing of the flags. There will also be Paul Scarborough prints for sale.

Chadds Ford: Chadds Ford Gallery and To-Jo Mushrooms proudly presents a new works of art exhibit by W. O. (Bill) Ewing, opening Friday, November 21, 5:00pm to 8:00pm; the exhibit continues thru December 11. Located at 1609 Baltimore Pike, the gallery is open Tuesday thru Saturday 10:00 to 5:00, Sunday's 12:00 to 5:00 and accepts major credit cards. Bill Ewing, artist, specializing in portrait and fine art paintings returns to Chadds Ford Gallery in a one-man exhibit. When sharing Ewing's experience on canvas of a chosen subject, the viewer knows it is done directly from life. Academically with a BFA, University of Tennessee, a MFA, University of Idaho, a post-graduate study under Arthur De Costa, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, years of independent study here and abroad, DeCosta describes Bill as,"a very strongly talented, meticulous and adventuresome painter whose brilliance and bravura transcends any "school" concept. His approach to art permits a kind of fluency of handling and a translucency of color that his personal inner vision demands. He is one of the best technicians I've ever known who is going about his work with intelligence and tremendous dedication."
Ewing's support comes from many friends, artists, clients, including Andrew Wyeth. On a return drive from one of many Wyeth's visits to Bill's studio, commented to his friend Tom Drane of the self portrait on the the cover art for this exhibit, "Subjects Matter", "he enjoyed seeing the self portrait of Bill at his easel, calling him a "master" and suggesting that it should be shown." It has been written, "Ewing, who lives in Chester County, is clearly a supremely accomplished painter ... He has nothing to prove to his admirers. His timeless still life's - fruit and tableware arranged in various ways against beige studio backgrounds - are masterfully played variations on a theme. Ewing's oils are the surfaces - firm apple skin and cool, reflective silver almost beg to be touched." Recent portrait commissions include the founder of Herr Potato Chips, Jim Herr and his wife; James McErlane, partner at Lamb, McErlane Attorneys, West Chester and Bruce Wilson, former Sr. Vice President of Conrail Department of Law.
Bill Ewing's wife Mary, is also an accomplished artist .... a frame maker, whose artistry surrounds her husbands' artworks.
To-Jo Mushrooms, located in Avondale, PA, has been active in the local community for years, supporting various philanthropic organizations every year. Fine art is a special and important part of that support. To-Jo has been a longtime patron to local artists, as well as personal friend [s] with Bill Ewing. At this time we are proud to sponsor Bill's latest art exhibit, "Subjects Matter" at the Chadds Ford Gallery. By doing so, we help in the production of the exhibit, and increase brand awareness for the To-Jo company in the Philadelphia area", said company President Tony D'Amico
