West Chester University Opera Theatre Stages

Beauty and the Beast on November 17 and 18

West Chester University’s Opera Theatre presents BEAUTY AND THE BEAST on Friday, November 17, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, November 18, at 3 p.m. in the Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall, Philips Memorial Building, 700 S. High Street, West Chester. General Admission tickets are $7 for adults at www.wcupatix.com/schoolofmusic. Tickets for faculty, staff, students, and children under 12 are FREE.

This operatic version of the familiar BEAUTY AND THE BEAST fairy tale features lush, romantic music by Vittorio Giannini.

Assistant Professor and Director of Opera Nicholas Provenzale says, “We are so excited to welcome audiences of all ages to see BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. It is the perfect introduction to opera for every age. It follows the familiar and popular classic fairytale, the music is beautiful and accessible, it is performed in English, and it is just under an hour long. We invite the entire community to join us for this magical, family-friendly opera.”

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST was performed at the Free Library of Philadelphia on Saturday, November 4, and will be performed at the Kennett Library on Saturday, November 11 at 2 p.m. These events are FREE and open to the public. The cast has also performed for Boys and Girls Clubs in the Philadelphia region with one remaining performance on November 20.

Provenzale adds, “I chose this shorter opera with a familiar story for our outreach tour, which is a terrific way to bring opera to new audiences while providing an opportunity for our students to hone their craft.”

WCU Opera’s production of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST includes a cast of 11 with accompaniment by one onstage pianist. The show is double cast. Vocal Performance major Zoe Bennett (Malvern, PA) performs in the title role as BEAUTY on November 18. Flute major Elizabeth Jones (Willow Grove, PA) plays the role on November 17, 2023.

Limited parking is available across and along the street just outside the Philips Memorial Building. Parking is also available in West Chester’s M Lot, just a short walk South. Purchasing tickets in advance is strongly encouraged.

Childcare: The Workforce Behind the Workforce
Dec 7 @ 08:00 – 09:30

Employers Invited to Free Workshop on “Childcare: The Workforce Behind the Workforce” by Chester County Economic Development Council

The Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC) is inviting employers to a free workshop and breakfast on options for addressing employee childcare.

Childcare staffing shortages and extensive waitlists continue to affect families and employers, resulting in employee absences, scheduling conflicts and frustration.

The panel discussion and roundtable called “Childcare: The Workforce Behind the Workforce” will be held on Thursday, December 7th at Delaware County Community College-Downingtown Campus with a free continental breakfast and networking starting at 7:30 a.m. The program is from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

The interactive presentation featuring a panel of industry experts will share their key experiences and insights for creating and delivering tangible action-focused childcare solutions that benefit both employees and employers. Register at https://ccedcpa.com/event/workforce-childcare/

In Pennsylvania, 68% of children age six and under are in need of childcare, and families typically spend 11-20% of their income on those costs. Thursday’s panel discussion will explore employer options for supporting employee childcare, followed by a roundtable on innovative childcare infrastructure solutions.

"Labor shortages and challenges were the centerpiece of CCEDC’s Workforce Summit held last spring, said Patti VanCleave, CCEDC Vice President of Workforce Development. “All of us at CCEDC view it as our mission to bring together employers to alleviate this workforce crisis together.”

New North American Tour of the Iconic Tony Award-winning musical to play The Playhouse on Rodney Square

January 5-7, 2023

Leapin’ Lizards!  The Grand is happy to welcome an all-new tour of the iconic Tony Award®-winning musical ANNIE, which will play The Playhouse on Rodney Square January 5-7, 2024. This tour is produced by Crossroads Live North America.

Tickets for the Wilmington engagement of ANNIE are on sale now at BroadwayInWilmington.org, by calling 302.888.0200, or by visiting The Playhouse Box Office at 1007 N. Market Street. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more (excluding Saturday matinee) and may be placed by calling 302.888.0200. ANNIE is part of the 2023-2024 Broadway in Wilmington season presented by Bank of America.

“This show, with its iconic title character, continues to delight generations of theatre-lovers old and new by joyfully singing directly into the face of great adversity with perseverance, guts and guile,” said director Jenn Thompson. “For decades, ANNIE has continued to shine brightly, not only as an appeal to our better angels, but also as an example of the thrill of hope, hard-won: promising a better ‘Tomorrow’ not only for Annie herself, but for all who need her message now more than ever.”

ANNIE is directed by Jenn Thompson, who at the age of 10 stepped into the role of “Pepper” in the Original Broadway production, choreographed by Patricia Wilcox (Motown, A Night with Janis Joplin), music supervision by Matthew Smedal, with orchestrations by Dan DeLangeTalitha Fehr is the Music Coordinator and Jennifer Christina is the Music Director.

The design team includes scenic design by Wilson Chin (Pass Over), costume design by Alejo Vietti (Jersey Boys), based on lighting design by Philip Rosenberg, sound design by Ken Travis (Disney’s Aladdin), hair & wig design by Ashley Rae Callahan and casting by Paul Hardt of Hardt Casting, LLC.

The lovable mutt “Sandy” is once again trained by Tony Award® Honoree William Berloni (ANNIEA Christmas StoryLegally Blonde).

In the title role of Annie is Rainier “Rainey” Treviño, an 11 year old from Chesapeake, Virginia making her national tour debut.  Returning principal cast includes Stefanie Londino as “Miss Hannigan,” Christopher Swan as “Oliver Warbucks,” Julia Nicole Hunter as “Grace,” and Mark Woodard as “FDR.” Also starring in the tour are Jeffrey T. Kelly as “Rooster” and Samantha Stevens as “Lily.  Georgie, rescued by William Berloni, stars as “Sandy.”

The Orphans are Savannah Austin, Arianna Guller, Avery Hope, Addie Jaymes, Kylie Noelle Patterson and Jade Smith.

The featured ensemble includes Savannah Fisher, Jerquintez A. Gipson, Caroline Glazier, Chance K. Ingalls, Kaleb Jenkins, Jaelle Laguerre, Tony Mowatt, Nick Traficante, Kaylie Mae Wallace, Callie Alexa, Brooke Olivia Gatto, and Trent Tyson.

Holding onto hope when times are tough can take an awful lot of determination, and sometimes, an awful lot of determination comes in a surprisingly small package. Little Orphan Annie has reminded generations of theatergoers that sunshine is always right around the corner, and now the best-loved musical of all time is set to return in this new production – just as you remember it and just when we need it most.  This celebration of family, optimism and the American spirit remains the ultimate cure for all the hard knocks life throws your way.

Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as, “one of the best family musicals ever penned!”, ANNIE features a book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin. All three authors received 1977 Tony Awards® for their work.

By permission of Tribune Content Agency, LLC, ANNIE is based on Harold Gray's popular comic strip “Little Orphan Annie” which premiered in the 1920s in the New York Daily News and became one of the most widely read strips in the 30s and 40s.  Lyricist Martin Charnin bought a coffee table book called “The Life and Hard Times of Little Orphan Annie” as a Christmas gift for a friend in 1970. The clerk at the bookstore was too busy to wrap the book, so Charnin took the book home to wrap it.  Instead, he read it and fell in love with the strip and set out to secure the rights. The friend never got the book.

The original production of ANNIE had its world premiere on Aug 10, 1976 at the Goodspeed Opera House (Michael J. Price, Executive Director) and opened on Broadway on April 21, 1977 at the Alvin Theatre (Neil Simon theatre).  It went on to win the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, seven Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, the Grammy for Best Cast Show Album and seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book (Thomas Meehan) and Best Score (Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin).  It closed on Broadway after playing 2,377 performances.  ANNIE was revived on Broadway in 1997 and again in 2014.
