A Cantata for Christmas

presented by

St. Michael Lutheran Church Choirs,
Friends and Guest Musicians

Christmas Greetings to you and your family! I am guessing this note finds you burning the candle at both ends as we wind down to Christmas. Shopping, baking, packing, wrapping, kids activities ... what a great, yet busy time of the year for us all.
Along with Christmas greetings I wanted to remind you of the special service we have planned for Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. A beautiful service of celebration featuring all of our St. Michael Choirs as they present, "The Song Heard Round the World", a special cantata of Christmas carols and folk tunes from cultures around the world. The cantata will be accompanied by a small instrumental ensemble. What a glorious opportunity for us to gather as a church family to prepare our hearts and minds for the Savior's birth. I hope you will plan to be in church this Sunday!A special Holiday Fellowship Hour will follow with coffee and snacks in the Fellowship Hall. We invite you to bring a holiday snack to share if you are so inclined. Please drop it off in the kitchen upon your arrival in the morning.

60th Anniversary of DMNH
Dec 30 all-day

It's been an exciting year for the Delaware Museum of Natural History.

Thanks to our visitors, volunteers, donors and Members for all of your support in 2017.

Today is a very special day for DMNH. It was exactly 60 years ago on December 30, 1957 that the Museum was incorporated, with a vision of "encouragement and cultivation of the sciences, particularly natural sciences and natural history."  Nearly 15 years later, in May 1972, our building opened to the public. Click the image below for a short slideshow about our history.

Much has changed since then. From a modest beginning in 1957, with a handful of specimens, the Museum is now home to a world-renowned scientific collection. From an annual attendance of 10,000 in 1972, we've hosted nearly 73,000 people this year. And demand for our educational programming has also grown, with a 50 percent increase in school tours this year alone. We couldn't do this without your support.

As the year ends, please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Delaware Museum of Natural History. We're looking forward to an exciting 2018, and are grateful for your support. Thank you!

The Charlie Hunter Trio at Kennett Flash
Dec 30 @ 20:00

The Charlie Hunter Trio featuring Silvana Estrada comes to The Kennett Flash on Saturday December 30th

With a career spanning 25 years and almost 20 albums, Charlie Hunter consistently ups his game as an innovative writer and bandleader. He has worked with the likes of Norah Jones, Mos Def, John Mayer, D’Angelo and countless others. He is widely considered the authority on the seven and eight - string guitar, and continues to stun audiences with his ability to simultaneously bust out tasty bass parts, melodic leads and swinging rhythms.  And on Saturday December 30th he brings the latest incarnation of his Trio to The Kennett Flash in Kennett Square, PA.  The show will be highlighted by the inclusion of Silvana Estrada, the 21 year old, Veracruz, Mexico native who will be on her first ever US tour.

Silvana Estrada, a native of Mexico’s southeast, had just started her studies of Jazz at the University of Veracruz and quickly became known throughout the Jazz Studies Centre as a unique triple threat talent: an instrumentalist, playing the Cuatro Venezolano, vocalist and songwriter whose original compositions are a mixture of Latin American sounds and a vocal interpretation that comes from the “son jarocho” tradition of Veracruz.

On a whim after rehearsing one day, Silvana and the band took a road trip to hear one of their heroes; Charlie Hunter was in Mexico City delivering a Master Class at the University. Inspired (and pushed by Alex the drummer) the band waited to meet Charlie whereupon Silvana sang for him on the spot. Charlie was so impressed that he ended up staying in Mexico, calling his sound engineer buddy Chris Finney from New Orleans and together they went to Silvana’s magical hometown in the Southeastern hills of Mexico to record her debut album - Lo Sagrado (The Sacred) that will be released on Charlie’s non - profit 30 Amp Circuit later this month.

After an enormous amount of paperwork and an enormous amount of money, Charlie and his teammates were able to get Silvana a one year work visa to take advantage of her music and newfound friends.

Touring in US starts this December and will continue through 2018.
