“Abraham Lincoln: A Study in the Paradox of Greatness”
Feb 12 @ 18:00 – 19:00

N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945) Abraham Lincoln (1938/1939), Oil on panel, 26 ¾ x 24 7/8 inches. Brunnier Art Museum, University Museum of Iowa State University,  Ames, Iowa

"Abraham Lincoln:

A Study in the Paradox of Greatness"

Wednesday, February 12, 6 p.m.
Abraham Lincoln's contemporaries knew little about this relatively inexperienced candidate when he ran for president—and they had good reason to doubt his abilities. But Lincoln became one of America's best known and most honored leaders. This presentation by Commonwealth Speaker Roger Lane will explore Lincoln's claim on posterity, which rests on his victory in the Civil War as well as on the unique combination of his personal qualities, his historical context and the American imagination. This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council supported in part by National Endowment for the Humanities. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council, a nonprofit organization, inspires individuals to enjoy and share a life of learning.  The museum will remain open until 6 p.m., for viewing of N. C. Wyeth’s America in the Making, an exhibition which includes Wyeth’s illustration of Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address. Free for members and included in museum admission.

A social sciences research professor at Haverford College, Lane has been named one of the "Top Ten Profs" in the Philadelphia metropolitan area by Philadelphia Magazine. He has written several prize-winning books and frequently appeared in television documentaries dealing with crime, the history of Philadelphia and the urban African American experience.

STOMP at DUPONT THEATRE
Feb 21 @ 20:00 – 21:00

Wilmington, DE – January 10, 2014 –Back by popular demand, STOMP, the international percussion sensation, is coming to Wilmington, Delaware at the DuPont Theatre for four (4) performances only from February 21-23, 2014.  From its beginnings as a street performance in the UK, STOMP has grown into an international sensation over the past 20 years, having performed in more than 50 countries and in front of more than 24 million people.

Created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, STOMP continues its phenomenal run with four global productions: the ongoing sell-out production at New York's Orpheum Theatre, a permanent London company, and North American and European tours. Throughout its life, the show has continued to change by creating new material; this year, it will incorporate two new pieces.  It is safe to say you will never again look at supermarket carts or plumbing fixtures the same way… or paint cans, or kitchen sinks or…

STOMP, an overwhelming success marked by rave reviews, numerous awards, and sell-out engagements, is the winner of an Olivier Award for Best Choreography (London's Tony Award), a New York Obie Award, a Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatre Experience, and a Special Citation from Best Plays.

In addition to the stage shows, STOMP has been an overwhelming success marked by rave reviews, numerous awards, an Academy Award nomination, four Emmy nominations and one Emmy Award for their acclaimed HBO special Stomp Out Loud, noteworthy TV appearances including The London 2012 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony, The Academy Awards (produced by Quincy Jones), Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, and a series of award-winning international commercials.

The performers “make a rhythm out of anything we can get our hands on that makes a sound,” says co-founder/director Luke Cresswell.  A unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy, STOMP has created its own inimitable, contemporary form of rhythmic expression: both household and industrial objects find new life as musical instruments in the hands of an idiosyncratic band of body percussionists.  It is a journey through sound, a celebration of the everyday and a comic interplay of characters wordlessly communicating through dance and drum.

Synchronized stiff-bristle brooms become a sweeping orchestra, eight Zippo lighters flip open and closed to create a fiery fugue; wooden poles thump and clack in a rhythmic explosion.  STOMP uses everything but conventional percussion instruments - dustbins, tea chests, radiator hoses, boots, hub caps - to fill the stage with a compelling and unique act that is often imitated but never duplicated.

Critics and audiences have raved: “STOMP is as crisp and exuberant as if it had opened yesterday,” says The New York Times. The San Francisco Chronicle declares “STOMP has a beat that just won’t quit!” The Los Angeles Times exclaims: “Electrifying! Triumphs in the infinite variety of the human experience.” “A phenomenal show! Bashing, crashing, smashing, swishing, banging and kicking – a joyous invention!” says the Chicago Tribune.

Performances are Friday and Saturday evening performances start at 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 2 pm.  Ticket prices start at $35.  To purchase tickets or for more information about group rates, call the DuPont Theatre Box Office at 302-656-4401 or 800-338-0881 or on the internet, DuPont Theatre site: www.duponttheatre.com.

A $48 prix fixe menu will be available before all performances and the Lobby Lounge will be open throughout the weekend.   For information on dining before or after performances at the DuPont Theatre, please call the Hotel du Pont at 302-594-3154 or 800-338-3404.  Open Table dining reservations can be made direct from the DuPont Theatre dining page or the Hotel du Pont Green Room dining page.

For press information, interview requests and photography, contact Carolyn Grubb at 302-594-3162 or visit the press room at the DuPont Theatre website at duponttheatre.com.

Located at the DuPont Building in Wilmington, DE, the DuPont theatre is a 1,252-seat theatre that has been presenting professional Broadway productions since 1913.  It also boasts a variety of entertainers, businesses, charitable groups and private parties.  DuPont is a science company.  Founded in 1802, DuPont puts science to work by solving problems and creating solutions that make people’s lives better, safer and easier.  Operating in more than 90 countries and regions, DuPont offers a wide range of innovative products and services for markets including agriculture and food; building and construction; communications and transportation.
