Kennett Symphony of Chester County Announces
2013 Annual Voice Competition

KENNETT SQUARE, PA –
Each spring the Kennett Symphony of Chester County hosts an annual vocal competition that allows talented young artists to display their gifts as part of the Symphony’s mission to provide opportunities for emerging musicians. Under the direction of Maestra Mary Woodmansee Green and organized by Mr. and Mrs. Paul J. Merluzzi, the 2013 Voice Competition will be held on Saturday March 23, 2013 beginning at 1:00pm in the auditorium of Kendal at Longwood, Kennett Square, PA. The competition is open to the public, free of charge, and offers a wonderful opportunity to hear and encourage these gifted young singers.
The competition is limited to sixteen singers, age 18-26 as of January 1, 2013. Competitors must perform three operatic, oratorio, or concert arias from the 18th to the 21st centuries, with at least one in English. Judges will award prizes to first, second, and third place winners ranging from one hundred to five hundred dollars, and the first place finalist will be invited to perform at a Kennett Symphony concert. In addition to providing a wide range of symphonic music at affordable prices with its
winter and summer series, the Kennett Symphony maintains a strong commitment to
education and outreach programs that include three Young Artist competitions, Children’s Concerts with Instrument Petting Zoo, and its affiliation with the Kennett Symphony Children’s Chorus. The Young Artist Competitions provide an invaluable performance experience for aspiring musicians who have achieved a high level of proficiency.

children’s chorus, Dr. Van Stiefel and the acclaimed baritone
soloist Randall Scarlata. Dr. Stiefel, professor of music at
West Chester University, was inspired to set three poems
about Andrew Wyeth’s paintings by David Livewell to music.

Brandywine View Antiques is celebrating five “unbelievable and wonderful” years serving Chadds Ford. The celebration runs from Saturday March 23 and Sunday 24, 10-5PM. Guests will be the first to see the exciting Spring Preview and the opening of two additional vintage rooms with refreshments being served.

"The Enduring Legacy of F.O.C. Darley"
Panel Discussion on March 5
Enjoy an entertaining and enlightening evening of conversation about F.O.C Darley, the most popular illustrator of the mid-19th century, who lived in Claymont, Delaware for nearly 30 years. The lively panel discussion will take place at the Brandywine River Museum on March 5 at 5:30 p.m.
Felix Octavius Carr Darley (1822-1888) was a self-taught artist who received international renown for his illustrations, immortalizing the fictional characters created by the most famous authors of his day, including Charles Dickens, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper.
"The demand for Darley's work was so high that new books were promoted as 'illustrated by Darley' to sell more copies," said Audrey Lewis, associate curator. "He also was important to the tradition of illustration as it developed in the Brandywine Valley through Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth."
The panel will feature Darley scholar Georgia Barnhill, curator of graphic arts emerita at the American Antiquarian Society, and Gail Stanislow, Delaware history scholar and Brandywine River Museum librarian. Topics will include Darley's many and varied commissions, his use of humor, and his local connection to the greater Brandywine Valley region.
Admission is $20 for adults and $16 for members. Tickets available at the door (no advanced sales). A reception follows with cash bar.
At 5 p.m., curator Audrey Lewis will lead a tour of The Magic Pencil of the Amazing F.O.C. Darley. The exhibition features works from the Brandywine River Museum's rich permanent collection, rarely seen prints on loan from the Darley Society and several important works on loan from private collectors. Bank notes and bonds illustrated by Darley, a sketch book from his European tour, as well as examples of his important historical drawings and more, are also on view.
The Brandywine River Museum is located on U.S. Route 1 in Chadds Ford, PA. The museum is open daily, except Christmas Day, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults; $8 for seniors, $6 for students and children ages 6 to 12; and free for members and children under six. Museum admission is free on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to noon through November 24 (except during the Antiques Show on Memorial Day weekend). Get ready for an evening of hot music and cool improvisation as Unionville High School hosts the 15th annual “Jazz Along the Brandywine” festival on Friday, April 5, 2013 beginning at 6 p.m. Top area bands will show off their chops in a variety of styles from soul to swing to samba.
“It's a fun evening for the audience,” says G. Scott Litzenberg, director of Unionville
High School’s jazz band. “Some amazingly talented kids will be performing. It’s always exciting to hear the improv solos they come up with.”
This year’s participants are Charles F. Patton Middle School and the following high
schools: Radnor, Lower Merion, Upper Darby, Methacton, Rustin, Ridley, Marple Newtown,
West Chester East, Souderton, and Springfield (MontCo). The evening concludes with an
exhibition performance by the Unionville High School Jazz Band, followed by an awards
ceremony.

Red Carpet Gala April 13 at the West Chester National Guard Armory
Dust off your dancing shoes, get out your party clothes and come join the troops in West Chester for a fun night of wining, dining, dancing and entertainment – while contributing to the mission of creating a permanent theater for film and live performance in the heart of West Chester. The Uptown! Entertainment Alliance’s second annual Red Carpet Gala will take place on April 13, 2013 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Pennsylvania National Guard Armory on North High Street in West Chester. This festive and historic evening of live music, dancing and an auction will also be the community's farewell to the National Guard troops who have called the Armory home for almost a century.
Guests at the Red Carpet Gala will dance the night away in the Armory’s impressive Drill Hall to the sounds of The First Ladies of Rock & Soul, a 14-piece group known for recreating the songs of the great girl groups of the 60s and 70s. Other highlights of the evening will be a short salute to recognize the contributions of the National Guard troops, a performance by Joel Roberts, winner of the 2013 Uptown! Songwriting Contest, and live and silent auctions where guests can bid on great items from diamond jewelry to unique dinners and exotic vacations.
Food for the Red Carpet Gala will be provided by John Serock Catering of West Chester, and guests will also be treated to beers from regional brewers and unique wines from Brandywine Valley vintners Penns Woods Winery and Galer Estate Vineyards & Winery. Tickets for the Gala are $100 until April 1; following April 1 the cost will be $125; tickets can be purchased online at www.uea.eventbrite.com.
Funds raised at the Red Carpet Gala will help finance Uptown! Entertainment’s 2013-2014 programming and contribute toward the group’s vision of creating a permanent theater in West Chester. The Armory Building itself is first on the Uptown! list of sites for the theater, and the Red Carpet Gala provides local residents and art lovers a chance to see it used as an entertainment venue.

F. Michael Angelo, the University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian for Thomas Jefferson University,will speak on 50 years of Medicine. This program is part of the 50 year celebration for the Hadley Memorial Fund. Mr. Angelo prepares exhibits about University history, coordinates donation and cataloging of alumni papers and departmental records, and prepares the content of the University Archives website. He received a BA at Michigan State University and an MA in history and archival management and historical editing from New York University. Before he came to Jefferson in 2001, he worked as the Library Director and Archivist at Philadelphia's Independence Seaport Museum and Library, and prior to that, was the Director of Archives and Special Collections on Women in Medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania (now part of Drexel University).
He is a member of the Delaware Valley Archivists Group, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference and the Society of American Archivists He has served on the local arrangement committees for both and has presented papers at various archives and history conferences. He also has published essays, articles and contributed to several encyclopedias.

There will be a food cart there and music. Everyone has a great time and let’s hope for good weather!
