West Chester University’s Wells School of Music faculty, staff, students, and alumni will come together to pay tribute to one of its most illustrious alumni: arranger, composer, educator, and publisher Robert Harry “Bob” Curnow ’63. A week-long celebration in honor of Curnow will culminate in a FREE public concert of the Criterions Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Curnow, on Friday, November 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Madeleine Wing Adler Theatre, 817 S. High St., West Chester. Tickets must be reserved at http://www.wcupatix.com/schoolofmusic.
The tribute recognizes Bob and Darlene Curnow’s ‘64 recent gift to the Wells School of Music that includes more than 1,000 charts and pieces of music, representing a gift that is valuable historically, educationally, and monetarily.
Curnow, who currently resides in the state of Washington, is the founder of the very successful Sierra Music Publications. He played, arranged, and produced for the likes of the Stan Kenton Orchestra and others in the 1960’s and 70’s. Curnow had just one request when asked how he wanted to be recognized for his gift.
“I was the student conductor of the Criterions Jazz Ensemble - “Crites” for short - when I attended West Chester University from 1959 – 63,” says Curnow. “When Dean Chris Hanning asked how I would like to be recognized for my gift I knew my answer. I wanted to come ‘home’ to conduct the Crites.”
The concert will feature music from Curnow’s Sierra Music Publications library. Alumnus Matt Gallagher, principal trumpet player for The Philly Pops; acclaimed percussionist John Riley; and faculty member, alumnus, and trumpeter, John Swana are concert guest artists. During the week, Curnow will rehearse with students and moderate a Masterclass.
Curnow’s gifted collection includes 38 boxes full of books on music and arranging from Curnow’s personal collections, more than 1,000 pieces of music that includes scores and parts, reel-to-reel tapes of recordings from past Criterions concerts, 78 RPM records, and personal papers from Sierra Music. When he made the gift, Curnow instructed that the collection be used at the discretion of the University with a message that read, “I entrust these things to West Chester University as an expression of my sincere thanks for teaching me and showing me the way forward.”
Director of Jazz Studies Jonathan Ragonese says, “We are deeply grateful and honored that Curnow chose the Wells School of Music to house this valuable collection. The repertoire he is donating represents some of the best big band charts ever written, and now our students and ensembles have open access to them. Our audiences also benefit from Curnow’s gift, and now have the opportunity to hear first-hand a sampling of these masterpieces.”

Post Concert Q&A
West Coast composer Christine Donkin’s music has been described as “astonishingly beautiful”. Her Four Poems captures the essence of poetry that describes the changing of the seasons and the moods that they invoke. Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony is warm and dramatic and contains only 2 movements of a typical 4 movement symphony. It was discovered 37 years after his death, languishing in a desk drawer, before it was first performed. In Brahms’ Serenade No. 2, the violins of the orchestra are completely omitted, which is highly unusual, but gives the piece a darker hued quality. Brahms was 43 years old before he wrote his first Symphony and in order to prepare, he composed this smaller, shorter Serenade, a masterpiece in its own right.

The annual art show and sale to be held November 11 from 6-9 p.m. and November 12 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Unionville High School, showcases local working artists, Unionville High School (UHS) Alumni, and current UHS student artists. In addition to beautiful artwork, there is live music to entertain and delicious desserts to enjoy. Funds raised will benefit the UHS PTO, contributing to Educational Enrichment Projects to enhance the overall educational experience for all UHS students. In addition, funds will help make local community outreach efforts possible.
The Unionville High School Art Gala strives to include a variety of artists - both new and more established individuals. Approximately 70 participating artists express their talents though diverse mediums including oil and watercolor paintings, photography, glass, metal, pastels, mixed media, jewelry, ceramics, mosaics, and wood.
This year’s Featured Artist is Temre Stanchfield. Temre draws inspiration for her work from the natural world, painting flower, plant and landscape imagery as a means of highlighting the perennial life cycle. She explains that painting is a conversation about renewal in her studio, and she uses abstract elements to explore this conversation. Temre’s current work focuses on the local landscape of the Brandywine Valley region, combining texture with oil on birch panels or canvas, as well as studies on paper.
Temre studied classical figure painting at the University of Puget Sound in Washington State, in Florence, Italy, and at the University of Arizona. She is a frequent exhibitor in art shows, galleries and festivals throughout southern Pennsylvania and Delaware, including, most recently, the distinguished Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show in Philadelphia. Temre paints in her studio in southern Chester County.
The Art Gala also includes a Student Art section which highlights the impressive artistic talents nurtured by the outstanding UHS Art Department. In addition to approximately 175 student artists, students who demonstrate particularly refined and distinct talents are selected as Featured Student Artists each year. This year’s Featured Student Artists will be announced at the end of October.
A Silent Auction will be offered to the public, featuring beautiful artwork donated by the talented artists in the show as well as select regional activities and outings. The Silent Auction will be online at https://www.32auctions.com/unionvilleartgala2022 throughout the weekend of November 11-13. Donations to the silent auction along with business sponsorships are key components to the success of the Gala. Please see our website at https://www.unionvilleartgala.com for details on how to donate a silent auction item and/or to become a sponsor.
Friday evening includes live music from UHS students and local musicians, with assorted desserts and beverages offered for sale. Thirty percent of proceeds from art sales and 100% of proceeds from the silent auction benefit the UHS PTO. Admission is free.
