At the beginning of the 21st century, many colleges and universities have a broad educational mission: to develop the whole student. At WCU, extracurricular involvement has evolved from literary societies, special interest clubs, and formal dances to a total “co-curricular” approach as the key tool in personal development. Examine the exhibit’s rich collection of artifacts that speak to our unique student culture with Di Giovine; student co-curator Chelsey Moore; Charlie Warner, retired student life director of 30 years; Cara Jenkins, current director of Fraternity and Sorority Life; and Barrett McGee, associate director of Student Activities.

To Award Posthumous Outstanding Citizen of the Year
Mar 19 all-day

Presentation of the Chamber’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award held a different level of meaning this year. While selecting the Outstanding Citizen, a certain weight of significance for three key members that had passed during the year, and one that had passed during the latter part of 2019, made it clear that the honor would be posthumously. The involvement of these longtime and active Chamber members with a multitude of affiliations, projects, and causes left a profound impact on the Southern Chester County community. With overwhelming approval from the families and Chamber’s Executive Committee, Gail Suzanne Chase, Michael R. Moyer, Dennis C. Melton & David Gregory Hughes were posthumously selected as 2022 Outstanding Citizens of the Year.  Their lives and dedication to the Chamber and their communities were honored at the 55th Annual Chairman’s Gala, at Longwood Gardens on Saturday, March 19, 2022.

Gail Suzanne Chase, was the long-time branch manager of WSFS Bank in Kennett Square, and a well-loved friend to all.  Her volunteer efforts took her from the Lion’s Club of Kennett Square to Anson B. Nixon Park as an advocate for the park and to the Brandywine Valley SPCA.  She was the kind of person that everyone had to know, and once you met her, your friendship was lifelong.

Michael R. Moyer, longtime State Farm Insurance Agent in Kennett Square, was a devoted family man.  He enjoyed spending time with his loved ones and giving back to his community. He was an active member of the Chamber and served on the Board of Directors, as well as serving with Longwood Rotary Club, frequently participating in charitable events; even while he was ill, he was giving back 110%.

Dennis C. Melton, was a well-known architect, musician, and community leader.  He was responsible for the design or restoration behind many iconic landmarks in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, including the Anson Nixon Park Performance Pavilion, Country Butcher, Philter Coffee, and restoration of the historic Chalfont House.  Dennis loved being an active member of the Kennett community. He served as chairman of the Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce in 2006 and was a member of the Community & Government Relations Committee and Route 1 Economic Development Initiative.  He served as president of the Kennett Flash from its founding through 2019.  He founded and chaired the Summer Park Concert Series at Anson Nixon Park for its 14-year run. He also was a founding member of the MLK Breakfast Committee, serving on the program committee and singing in the choir for more than 14 years.  He was the kind of person that made a difference for so many, without seeking recognition.  He was a quiet observer in the room, but his presence & message were always powerful and well respected.

David Gregory Hughes, franchise owner and operator of SERVPRO of Kennett Square/Oxford and Cecil County, Maryland. He was one of only four Storm Coordinators for SERVPRO. He and his company handled the entire Northeast from the Carolinas up through Maine and out to Michigan. David’s also served his community as a contributor to local volunteer firefighters and EMS units, area school districts, the Southern Chester County Chamber and the Western Chester County Chamber of Commerce.  He was the type of person to give and never expect anything in return.  He simply understood what was needed in a community.

The 55th Annual Gala was attended by 220+ guests who enjoyed music, dancing, dinner, and a silent auction. Proceeds from the auction benefitted the Chamber’s Education and Scholarship Fund, supporting deserving high school students from Avon Grove, Kennett, and Unionville High Schools, and the Chester County Technical College High School – Pennock’s Bridge Campus.

The Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award
Established in 1968, the Award signifies exemplary volunteer efforts, community service, vision, leadership and citizenship of individuals who positively influence the welfare of the Southern Chester County community. Since that time, our community has gathered together annually to honor the men and women, who have served the community in this manner and, in doing so, received this prestigious award for their efforts.

Lofty Sentiments of Duty: A History of Military Service at WCU (Registration link TBD)

Our institution was founded less than a decade after the Civil War on land occupied by Camp Wayne, a “Camp of Instruction” that trained nearly 1,500 Union Army volunteers. They reportedly exhibited “lofty sentiments of duty” and “a high spirit of courage and patriotism” that continue to define WCU’s students’ legacy of military service. History Department chair Robert J. Kodosky joins Di Giovine for a tour of the exhibition, focusing on our community’s engagement in the military and our initiatives to serve our veterans upon their return. Kodosky will bring these experiences to life by recounting the stories of those who came to exemplify the legacy of Camp Wayne at West Chester University, a “Campus of Instruction” strong in the tradition of military service.

In 2013, West Chester University released its Climate Action Plan (CAP) to address the global climate crisis, foster resiliency and social equity, and bring concepts of environmental, economic, and social sustainability into our academics and operations. The CAP built on decades of activism, has guided our work for eight years, and will keep us focused on improvements to our natural and learning environments long into the future. Learn about WCU’s sustainability efforts through a special tour of the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology’s exhibition, Earth Day at 50: Lessons for a Sustainable Future with Di Giovine, then join the Director of WCU’s Office of Sustainability, Bradley Flamm, for an exclusive tour of WCU’s geo-exchange pump house and a conversation about the commitments WCU has made to energy efficiency, carbon neutrality, zero waste practices, and preparing our students and employees to advocate for sustainability on campus and beyond.

“Controlling Your Mindset And Dealing With Failure”: Washington Memorial Heritage Leadership’s April Forum To Explore The Importance Of One’s Outlook On Success @ Washinton Memorial Chapel
Apr 21 @ 18:00 – 20:00

The Seminar Will Discuss George Washington’s Intuitive Leadership Skills

According to a recent article in Entrepreneur, the single most important factor influencing a person's success – whether personal or professional – is mindset. And for those hoping to develop a winning leadership plan, a positive outlook is essential to meeting (and exceeding) all predetermined goals.

No one exhibited an acumen for intuitive leadership skills better than George Washington. That’s why The Washington Memorial Heritage and David Cross and Indispensable Leadership (LLC) will be hosting a discussion on this topic as part of their popular Leadership Series at the Washington Memorial Chapel (Rt. 23 Valley Forge Park, Valley Forge, PA) on Thursday, April 21 at 6 PM.

During “Controlling Your Mindset And Dealing With Failure,” Indispensable Leadership’s Historical Expeditionary David Cross will explore how one can change his or her life by learning from George Washington and how he went from being one of the worst leaders ever, during the Seven Years’ War, into our greatest.

The Washington Memorial Heritage Leadership Forum Series is a History/Leadership and Author Events Program that kicked off earlier this year at the Washington Memorial Chapel. Drawing upon America’s Revolutionary history, the program examines the challenges and decisions faced by the country’s Founders. Analyzing their experiences, the program provides lessons which help attendees in their business and personal life.

The price will be $20 per person per session; students with proof of student status will be admitted free.

CVC to Host Annual Candlelight Vigil to Remember Those Lost to Violent Crime

The Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County, Inc. (CVC) will hold its Annual Candlelight Vigil and Memorial Service to remember loved ones and fallen law enforcement lost to violent crime over the years in Chester County on April 28th at the Victims’ Memorial Site in Kardon Park at 6:00 p.m.

One of CVC’s core services is to assist those who have been victimized by crime through their process of healing through advocacy and counseling.  The Annual Candlelight Vigil and Memorial Service has been held since 1991 (with the exception of 2020).  In conjunction with the Candlelight Vigil, about 15 years ago, two then current CVC counselors, Tina O’Connor and Gina Basciani, began working with survivors to process their loss due to violent crime through a quilting project. Creating a square unique to their loved one, survivors have had an opportunity to work through grief in a way that honors and remembers the person they lost. Brooke Hedderick, CVC’s Vice President of Operations, who has been with CVC for over 25 years shared “the quilt allows them to share their love and memories in a supportive environment. We talk about the loved one that is lost and share in the conversations – for instance - like they were such a diva or he had the most beautiful eyes. As they mourn, they remember, and there is a lot of laughter and tears.”

Beginning with Sue Stallard as the first seamstress, individualized squares have been sewn together forming the quilt pictured. Sue transitioned from the seamstress of the quilt, to a volunteer, and then to a staff member of the CVC before she passed in 2017. The squares include clothing articles, photographs, words of remembrance, and many other beautiful, and moving tributes. CVC Art Therapist Kate Stank, took over helping with the quilting project in 2012. She shared of working with clients and colleagues throughout the years, “It was always a powerful experience to watch survivors work on the quilt. The quilt is a keeper of memory and story of those lost and for those who lost them. It allows us to know that person on a more personal level. A cloth patch, a snip of clothing, a piece of jewelry; all chosen by survivors so that we can enter into the life that was…while honoring the loss that is, and always will be. The quilt holds their story now and for the future.”

If you would like to participate in CVC’s Quilting Project to create a square for your loved one lost to violence please contact Kate Stank at [email protected].

For those wishing to attend the Candlelight Vigil, the service and vigil will take place outside at the Victims’ Memorial in Kardon Park, Downingtown. As the event is being held completely outside at the Memorial seating is very limited so if you would like to guarantee a seat for the service, please bring a chair or blanket. This event is weather permitting and any cancellations will be posted on the Facebook event page and CVC’s website.

Additional details and weather cancellation information can be found at www.CVCofCC.org/vigil

The Washington Memorial Heritage’s Leadership Series Focuses On Ben Franklin @ Washington Memorial Chapel
May 12 @ 18:00 – 20:00

May’s Class Will Discuss Benjamin Franklin’s Role As The First American To Gain

World-Wide Attention As A Brilliant Writer, Businessman, Politician, And Scientist

The Washington Memorial Heritage and David Cross and Indispensable Leadership (LLC) are teaming up, once again, for their popular Leadership Series at the Washington Memorial Chapel (Rt. 23 Valley Forge Park, Valley Forge, PA) on Thursday, May 12 at 6 PM.

During this month’s discussion, “Washington’s Contemporaries,” David Cross will explore the relationship between George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, while diving into the personal and career lessons Franklin has left us. He will reflect upon Franklin’s role as the first American to gain world-wide attention as a brilliant writer, businessman, politician, and scientist as well as the first to write what, we refer to today, as a “self- help” book. Franklin’s autobiography was written not to leave behind the stories of a great man so much as to show the entrepreneurial pathway by which others could also rise from poverty to reach the highest level of financial success and intellectual and moral strength.

A series that will educate, inspire, and empower, “Washington’s Contemporaries” is perfect for entrepreneurs, business professionals and those looking to enhance their lives and their careers.
