Join us for a Friday evening gathering (not a lecture!) exclusively for adults that focuses on unexplored aspects of early American history and culture. Guests will experience history with hands-on activities, food and drink tastings, demonstrations, and more. Tavern Nights takes place at the Chadds Ford Historical Society’s Barns-Brinton House, an historic 1714 tavern, located next to the Chaddsford Winery at 630 Baltimore Pike. Admission is $20 for non-members and $15 for members. Tickets must be purchased in advance over the phone, in person or online as space is limited. All attendees must be 21 and older.

Our March program highlights the unexplored history of home brewing in the Colonial era. Guests will have the opportunity to watch beer historian Rich Wagner create a "sixthel" and demonstrate aspects of Colonial brewing with his "barrel of fun". Play some Colonial drinking (libation) games, all while learning about women brewsters with beer historian John Medkeff in the spirit of Women's History Month. Crebilly Hearing
May 6 @ 13:00

The next court date for oral argument has been changed to Monday, May 6th at 1 p.m. in Pittsburgh.

The decision to move the court date from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh was appealed by Westtown Township solicitor, Patrick McKenna, and sadly denied, leaving no other alternative.  It seems Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh have a week long, rotating schedule for Commonwealth Court and Crebilly Farm just happened to get bumped to Pittsburgh.  Because all parties involved were not in agreement to move back to Philadelphia (i.e. Toll Brothers and the Robinson family), it will stay in Pittsburgh.

‘The Sound of Music’ Premiere
May 9 @ 19:30

THE NEW NATIONAL TOURING PRODUCTION OF THE SOUND OF MUSIC

Music by RICHARD RODGERS

Lyrics by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II

Book by HOWARD LINDSAY and RUSSEL CROUSE

Suggested by The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp

PREMIERES IN WILMINGTON MAY 9-12

AT THE PLAYHOUSE ON RODNEY SQUARE

A brand new production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, produced by NETworks Presentations, is making its Wilmington premiere May 9-12, 2019 at The Playhouse on Rodney Square as part of a North American tour. Tickets are on sale now at www.BroadwayInWilmington.org, or by calling 302.888.0200. For more information, please visit TheSoundOfMusicOnTour.com.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, suggested by The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp. The beloved musical story of Maria and the von Trapp Family will once again thrill audiences with its Tony®, Grammy® and Academy Award®–winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss” and the title song.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC enjoyed extraordinary success as a live television production when “The Sound of Music Live!” aired on NBC in December 2013 and was seen by over 44 million people. 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful movie musical in history.

In the words of Ted Chapin, President of Rodgers & Hammerstein, “I waited for a moment when we could rediscover THE SOUND OF MUSIC as it was originally created. Because of the enormous success of the film, few were aware that it started life as a hit Broadway show—and a very big hit at that! The artists behind this production embraced what the authors wrote, looked at it all through modern eyes and, in so doing, found depth and resonance that has been recognized by critics and audiences across the country. It's like visiting an old friend but finding yourself surprised as well. It's also a reminder of why this show is such an evergreen."

The touring cast features: Jill-Christine Wiley playing Maria Rainer, with Mike McLean as Captain Georg von Trapp, Lauren Kidwell as The Mother Abbess, Jake Mills as Max Detweiler, Kate Turner as Elsa Schraeder, Lauren O'Brien as Liesl and Hunter Brown as Rolf Gruber. The von Trapp children are played by Ethan Douglas Cutillo (Kurt), Riley O'Kane (Marta), Jenna Seasholtz (Louisa), Emily Strugatsky (Brigitta), Quinn Eden Titcomb (Gretl) and Edward Turner (Friedrich).

Completing the cast are Bryan Austermann, Henry Fin Berry, Tommy Betz, Morgan Blanchard, Nicholas Carroll, Elaine Cotter, Scott Fuss, Kelly Glyptis, Stephanie Gray, Leah Greene, Amelija Hill, Jordyn Norkey, James Taylor Odom, James Parks, Jillian Rossi, Christina Tompkins, Ariana Valdes and Teresa Whitt.

The creative team for this new production includes direction by Matt Lenz, based on the national tour’s original direction by three-time Tony Award® winner Jack O’Brien (Hairspray, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Coast of Utopia). Original choreography by Danny Mefford (Dear Evan Hansen, Fun Home, The Bridges of Madison County, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) has been recreated by Jonathan Warren, with music supervision by Andy Einhorn (Hello, Dolly!, Bullets Over Broadway, Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, The Light in the Piazza). The design and production team is comprised of Tony Award® nominee Douglas W. Schmidt, set design (The Front Page, 42nd Street, Into the Woods); Tony Award® winner Jane Greenwood, costume design (The Little Foxes, 2014 Special Tony Award® for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre), six-time Tony Award® winner Natasha Katz, lighting design (Long Day’s Journey Into Night, An American in Paris, Once, Aida, The Coast of Utopia, The Glass Menagerie) and Shannon Slaton, sound design (Present Laughter, The Humans). Casting is by Stewart/Whitley.

‘Gateways to Nature’ Opens
May 11 all-day

Gateways to Nature opens to visitors on Saturday, May 11, 2019.

With the environment making national and international news these days, this summer, one of
Delaware County’s hidden gems plans to change the ways we think about nature in art.

Beginning May 11, Tyler Arboretum asks visitors to look at nature in new ways in its outdoor
summer sculpture exhibit, Gateways to Nature.

“With this exhibit we’re inviting visitors to join us on a sculptural journey around the Arboretum”,
says Tyler’s Communications Manager, Gary Bloomer. “But unlike previous exhibits, this time we’re
asking visitors to suspend their beliefs as to what art is and where art is usually found and displayed.”

Specifically, Gateways to Nature asks visitors to consider the question:

  • When we look at nature through the frame of art, how does our experience of nature change?

As part of Tyler’s 75th anniversary year, and featuring the work of regional artists and makers, many of whom have exhibited works internationally, Gateways to Nature showcases Tyler Arboretum’s landscapes with a range of original works set throughout the Arboretum.

In Gateways to Nature, Tyler asks visitors to see, feel, and experience the landscapes of Tyler in new ways; tempting people to walk through the Wind Tunnel and hear the movement of the wind, or inviting them to experience the historic buildings through the perspective of a kaleidoscope, while elsewhere on the grounds, coaxing visitors to get up close and personal with steel-crafted, larger-than-life animals that prowl the Pinetum.

Presenting an exciting range of frames, vistas, portals, and thresholds through which to step, to look, or through which to refocus attention on nature, the contributing artists to Gateways to Nature offer alternative experiences of art in the natural environment. The sculptures challenge expectations as to what gateways are and can be, while asking visitors to the 650 acre campus to stop, to think, and to consider:

  • Do gateways have to be physical gates?
  • How does the view through each sculpture change as the viewer moves?
  • How does the presence of steel, glass, and brick shift our perceptions as to what things belong where?
  • How do hand-made items in nature change our experience of the great outdoors?
  • How does sculpture impact the environment?

Working in a range of materials, from wood, metal, and masonry, the 13 artists and makers included in
Gateways to Nature are:

J.D. Scott, of Williamsburg, Virginia, maker of Wind Tunnel
John Parker, Philadelphia, PA, maker of Bengal Tiger, Imperial Elk, and Flora Duet
Karen Delaney, West Chester, PA, maker of Grand Arch
Lele Galer, of Kennett Square, PA, maker of Kaleidoscope, and Heart Lock Gateway
Lisa Fedon, of Chadds Ford, PA, maker of Safe Haven
Matthew Harris, of Perryville, MD, maker of At the Garden’s Door
Parris Bradley, of Villanova, PA, maker of Scrub-a-Dub-Dub
Roman Tybinko, of Philadelphia, PA, maker of Iconostasis
Roy Wilson and Ann Hopkins Wilson, of Plymouth Meeting, PA, makers of Prayer Wheels
Susan Benarcik, of Greater Philadelphia, maker of Conditioned to See
Vanny Channal, of Philadelphia, maker of Buck of Steel, Steel Mantis, and American Steel Eagle
Williamson College of the Trades, Media, PA, makers of Brick Gateway

For the duration of the exhibit, Tyler’s docent volunteers will lead tours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
For visitors who prefer to explore alone, self-guided signage and maps will be available.

In Gateways to Nature, Tyler Arboretum invites visitors to pack a picnic and to pick a favorite piece of sculpture to spend time with while exploring nature through one of these different gateways.

The exhibit opens to visitors on May 11 and runs until September 2.

Select images and brief biographies of the artists taking part in Gateways to Nature can be found on Tyler’s website:
