• Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injury.

Many people do not know that FEAR of falling can actually become a self-fulfilling prophecy, putting us at an increased risk for falls.  The GOOD NEWS is that YOU can reduce your risk of falling and the Healthy Steps for Older Adults Program can help get you there.  Address your fears by educating and equipping yourself with the right tools, which can make a difference in your life and your risk for falling.

The County of Delaware Office of Services for the Aging (COSA) is working collaboratively with Crozer-Keystone Health System to Offer the Healthy Steps for Older Adults Program at Brinton Lake. This 2 session evidence-based program proven to help reduce the risk of falls among older adults will be held on Mondays, December 10^th and 17^th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Crozer-Keystone Health System’s Brinton Lake Facility, 300 Evergreen Drive, 1^st Floor Conference Room, Glen Mills, PA 19342.  Must register by contacting Joe Miller at 610-447-2060.

Strategic planning is a hallmark of the district's approach to effective governance, responsible stewardship, and excellence in education. The district develops long-range strategic plans in many areas including curriculum, technology, facilities/grounds, and our comprehensive plan.

Long-range planning allows the district to focus on the highest priorities in order to best meet the safety and instructional needs of our students. As you may know, the district has been working on a Long-Range Facilities Plan to address our immediate and long-range buildings and grounds needs. Details of this plan have been shared during recent board meetings and on the district website.

We now want to hear from you!

The district is hosting a Community Conversation to discuss the Long-Range Facilities Plan School on December 10, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. in the Unionville High School cafeteria. This event is open to all UCFSD parents, students, district staff, and community members.

During the meeting, the district will present an overview of the Long-Range Facilities Plan, after which attendees will break out into small groups to discuss different aspects of the plan. Finally, attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback to administrators.

We feel it is critical to obtain meaningful input from the UCFSD community before the plan is finalized. Only with your participation can we ensure that this plan truly reflects our community.

Affordably-Priced Housing is topic of Citizen Planners’ Breakfast to be held December 13 at Desmond

Chester County 2020 and Chester County Planning Commission sponsors event

            Our workforce has seen little to no growth in the buying power of wages, in decades. Meanwhile the cost of housing has increased dramatically. A serious question exists as to whether the next generation can afford to live in Chester County.

A two-hour Citizen Planners’ Breakfast is being sponsored by Chester County 2020 and the Chester County Planning Commission on Thursday, December 13 at the Desmond Hotel, 1 Liberty Boulevard, Malvern, beginning at 7:00 a.m.

Jason Duckworth, President of Arcadia Land Company, will lead a panel discussion on the issue. Panel members will include Brian O’Leary, Executive Director of the Chester County Planning Commission, Sara Peck, Principal of Progressive New Homes LLC, and Nate Echeverria, Economic Development Director of Historic Kennett Square.

“This is a very important topic for Chester County,” said John B. Hannum, Jr., Chairman of Chester County 2020. “Chester County is known as a great place to live, work and raise a family. We need to make sure the County has affordably-priced housing for those who make this county great.”

O’Leary will begin the session by giving a talk: Why Do We Care?

Chester County to host free Naloxone Giveaway Day for residents

On Thursday, December 13^th, Chester County’s Health Department and Department of Drug & Alcohol Services are hosting a free Naloxone Day, with doses of the medication being given away to anyone who cannot or does not wish to obtain it from a pharmacy.  The event is part of the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s “Stop Overdoses in PA: Get Help Now” campaign and the goal is to increase awareness of, and access to the lifesaving medication, especially for those who feel they can benefit from having a dose of naloxone on hand, who may have a substance use disorder, or those who may encounter someone in crisis.

On Thursday, December 13^th from 11:00am to 7:00pm two naloxone distribution sites will be set up in Chester County – one at the Chester County Government Services Center, 601 Westtown Road in West Chester and the other at the Chester County Public Safety Training Campus, 137 Modena Road in South Coatesville.  Recipients will not have to provide any personal information to receive the naloxone. Distribution is on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last and just one naloxone kit is available per person.

Naloxone, also known by the brand names Narcan® or Evzio, is a medication which reverses opioid (prescription painkillers, fentanyl, and heroin) overdoses and gives the person a chance at recovery. When given during an opioid overdose, naloxone blocks the effects of opioids on the brain and restores breathing within minutes.

“Last year Chester County lost 144 lives to accidental drug overdose, a majority of which involved opioids,” said Vince Brown, Director of the Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services. “We are working together, and must continue to work together to provide comprehensive solutions to the opioid epidemic, and access to naloxone is a key part of that.  The medication saves lives.

“Once stabilized following an overdose, someone who is suffering from an Opioid Use Disorder has a chance to obtain treatment and recovery.  We know treatment works and recovery is possible,” added Brown.

Jeanne Casner, Director of the Chester County Health Department commented, “We want to get this lifesaving medication into the hands of many people in the community, which will ultimately save lives – but we recognize that some residents may not be able to make it out to one of the free Narcan distribution locations.

“The fact is, the public can obtain naloxone over the counter at most pharmacies due to a standing order, which is a prescription written for the general public by the Pennsylvania Physician General. Naloxone is covered by most insurance companies at little to no co-pay.

Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan added, “Every week, Chester County police officers save lives by administering naloxone to people who are overdosing.  This naloxone giveaway day invites ordinary citizens to join us in fighting the opioid epidemic by arming themselves to protect friends and loved ones who might overdose.  Every life matters.”

Chester County remains committed to tackling the opioid and heroin epidemic through intensive prevention, education, treatment and law enforcement measures, and has an established Overdose Prevention Task Force. All Aboard! Join in an exclusive, behind-the-scenes visit with the Brandywine River Museum of Art Railroad. Discover how the extensive layout, one of the world’s largest, is created and the complicated multitasking it takes to keep everything running. This before-hours event includes a private tour of the trains in action with Brandywine Railroad engineers including special activities for the youngest train fans and a continental breakfast (including assorted pastries, yogurt, granola, fruit, coffee, milk and juices) in the museum’s café. The Kennett Symphony of Chester County hosts an annual vocal competition that allows young artists to compete for an opportunity to perform with the Kennett Symphony – Chester County’s only fully professional symphony orchestra.  The 2018 Voice Competition will be held on Saturday December 15, 2018 beginning at 12:00pm in the auditorium of Kendal at Longwood, Kennett Square, PA. The competition is open to the public, free of charge, and offers an opportunity to hear the stars of tomorrow perform.

The competition is limited to twenty singers, age 18-26 as of January 1, 2018. Competitors must perform three operatic, oratorio, or concert arias from the 18th to the 21st centuries, with at least one in English. Judges will award prizes to first, second, and third place winners ranging from one hundred to one thousand dollars, and the first-place winner will be invited to perform at a Kennett Symphony concert.

Award-winning pianist and composer Jennifer Nicole Campbell will perform a variety of classical and holiday songs in museum atrium for visitors. Ms. Campbell has performed at halls including Lincoln Center, the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, the Musikhauset Aarhus in Denmark, and the Explorer’s Club in New York. She graduated from the prestigious Peabody Conservatory of Music at Johns Hopkins University where she earned her Bachelor’s and Master Degrees in Piano Performance and Composition. An avid composer, Ms. Campbell’s music has been performed by numerous prominent artists, and she also composes numerous works for the Academy of International Ballet, with whom she has served as Composer In Residence since 2017.

Young children and their parents are invited to kick off our NYE celebration at 6:30 pm. "Raising" our lighted Mushroom will take place at 8:45 pm.  Why not bring a senior along who would not usually celebrate NYE?

The Garage Community & Youth Center at 115 S Union Street will be our venue for an indoor event.  Doors open at 6:30 pm.  It might just be the place to get warm. The Funsters  will be back on stage to liven up the crowd from 9 pm 'til 12:30 am on S Union Street just outside The Garage.
