On January 27, the Brandywine River Museum of Art will unveil the first comprehensive exhibition of George A. "Frolic" Weymouth's artistic career, examining his contribution to American painting. Weymouth (1936-2016) was perhaps best known for his philanthropic endeavors, in particular as one of the founders and long-time chairman of the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art. He was also a remarkable artist. On view through June 3, 2018, The Way Back: The Paintings of George A. Weymouth will feature sixty-five of Weymouth's best works chosen by guest curator Joseph J. Rishel. The exhibition will include a number of pencil and watercolor studies Weymouth did in preparation for his tempera paintings. These rarely seen works will provide a rich understanding of Weymouth's keen eye and his artistic process. We hope you'll join us for opening weekend of this extraordinary exhibition. |

The campaign to help the Johnson Family raise money continues this Sunday with a dinner at Sovana Bistro.
As previously reported, Joanna Johnson — a teacher at Unionville High School — has two sons, Elliott and Henry, with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. To chauffer the boys, the family is in need of a new van to accommodate two wheelchairs. A GoFundMe campaign was launched in December to raise $80,000. More than $54,000 has been raised so far, but more is needed.
Sovana Bistro has agreed to donate a percentage of the tab for meals, beverages, and takeout orders on Sunday, Jan. 28, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. to the Johnson family so that they can purchase the van.
The school district sent out an email saying, “We need to pack Sovana Bistro, one of Unionville's most popular dining destinations, so, join us in celebrating the Unionville community and the Johnson family. Make your reservations, stop by or pick up a takeout order; mention the Johnson Project when making the reservation or when placing your order.”
Sovana Bistro is located at 696 Unionville Road in Kennett Square. The phone number is 610-444-5600.
The Gables Restaurant is holding a blood drive in honor of Timothy "Timmy" Gaige. Timothy passed away last year from complications of B cell lymphoma. He is survived by his wife MaryBeth Saunders Gaige and three beautiful children.
His treatment included many blood products, most of which came from anonymous donors. His family is so thrilled that was an option, one which would not have been possible without donations at drives like this.
Ann Kolenick asks for your help as to prepare for the upcoming blood drive scheduled for January 30th, 2018 from 2 to 7 p.m. There are still plenty of open appointment times. Click here to schedule a time.
Kolenick suggest you invite your spouse or significant other. Share the love as you share the lifesaving gift of blood together. Also invite a friend. Donating blood is always more fun with a friend, so bring one along or in place of your donation.

New York City All Female Blue Rock Band JANE LEE HOOKER returns to The Kennett Flash
Jane Lee Hooker (JLH) have just released their second studio album Spiritus and return to The Kennett Flash for their first show at the venue in two years on Wednesday January 31st. The group last played at The Flash in January 2016 and also played the Summer Concert Series at Anson B. Nixon Park in Kennett Square that summer. Local up and coming Blues Rockers Blues Reincarnation Project open the show.
JLH features former members of some great underground rock bands of the 90s and early 2000s - their members have spent time in Nashville Pussy, The Wives and Bad Wizard - as well as lead singer Dana "Danger" Athens who also spent time fronting the all female Led Zeppelin tribute Lez Zeppelin. All have left projects behind to put their full efforts into JLH who have since been signed to Germany Blues Label Ruf Records. Their first album No B! was released in 2016 and 2018 sees the follow up album Spiritus. In the past two years they have played everywhere from NYC's Irving Plaza to the Mountain Jam Festival to LA's Viper Room to the Big Blues Bender in Las Vegas. A recent European tour saw them performing to packed houses in Germany, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Denmark, and the Czech Republic, and they even performed live on Germany's legendary TV show Rockpalast (if you don't know this show you should, legendary performances by The Who, a young U2 and so many more are out there for viewing).
Opening act Blues Reincarnation Project is fronted by Ghana, West African born Jeffrey Attakorah. The band has been tearing up stages all over Delaware and has made a great impression on the Kennett Flash audience already with multiple performances at The Flash.

Scottish Burns Supper and Whisky Tasting

Each year, Scots from all over the world gather in the dark days of winter for a traditional evening meal and a joyous celebration to commemorate the birthday of one of their favorite sons, Robert Burns. Born on January 25, 1759, on a tenant farm, Burns captured the imagination and spirit of the Scottish people with his prose and poetry. He was lionized during his lifetime all over his native land. A few years after his untimely death at 37, his friends began to gather on his birthday for a meal and to toast to his “immortal memory.” The tradition has continued for over 200 years and spread to every country where Scots have settled.
The Brandywine Burns Supper consists of a hearty meal of traditional Scottish fare prepared by chef MacGregor Mann, including haggis and a tasting selection of a Belhaven ale and three single malt whiskies. A bagpiper will perform stirring Scottish music to accompany the haggis as it is brought to the table, and special guest Alasdair Nicol—PBS Antiques Road Show presenter and Freeman's Auction chairman—will deliver the “Address to a Haggis.” During the meal, Brandywine Board Member Jack Hines will guide us in single malt whisky tastings carefully paired with each delicious course.
The Museum galleries will be open for an hour before dinner for guests to enjoy the collections and view three N. C. Wyeth paintings used to illustrate The Scottish Chiefs, the classic novel recounting the life of Scottish patriarch William Wallace—who was made famous by the Hollywood blockbuster “Braveheart”—and Scotland’s fight for Independence.

We also want to recognize our Volunteer Librarian Melanie Baer who has been involved with CCAA for over 15 years when her son took art classes here, and she recently joined our Board of Directors. Her extraordinary efforts over the past two years have transformed our library space into a true library!

Paint Out Chadds Ford: A Plein Air Event
Saturday, February 3, 2018 - Reception & Wet Paint Sale from 6 to 8pm
The Chadds Ford Historical Society is hosting its 10th annual Plein Air art event, Paint Out Chadds Ford. From February 1 to 3, 2018, artists from the Mid-Atlantic region will be painting outside around the Chadds Ford area as well as at the Barns Brinton House, John Chads House and along Brandywine Creek.
The Society will host a special art exhibition at the CFHS Barn Visitors Center that will be open on Saturday evening, February 3. From 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. there will be an Artist Reception and Wet Paint Sale, where guests can view and purchase artwork made during the event. Tickets are $15 per person ($30 for Chadds Ford Historical Society members) and includes light refreshments. Guests can view and purchase displays of the work just completed by the artists for the plein air event as well as other plein air paintings of the Brandywine Valley.
Please help support local artists by joining us for this fun event that steps back into time when early American illustrators and painters such as Howard Pyle, Bayard Berndt, and N.C. Wyeth were inspired by the beauty of our region and painted outdoors.

Jim Graham: Behind the Lens, Lecture

Award-winning photographer Jim Graham will discuss his creative approach to capturing a broad range of subjects in over 35 years as an editorial, commercial and fine art photographer. Graham is a former staff photographer for the News Journal Papers, and his editorial clients include USA Today, The Associated Press and Bloomberg News. He was Southern Photographer of the year and has been nominated twice for the Pulitzer Prize. His local subjects include The Cheshire Hunt, Winterthur Point to Point, and portraits of George “Frolic” Weymouth in action with both carriage and paintbrush.
Tavern Talks: Chocolate and Courtship
The Chadds Ford Historical Society’s Tavern Talks will kick off its third season on Thursday, February 15th from 7-9 p.m. with “Chocolate and Courtship”. If you are looking to bring dating back to the basics – 300-year-old basics – then you will not want to miss out!
Guests will have the opportunity to watch chocolate-making demonstrations by Mars’ AMERICAN HERITAGE® Chocolate’s very own Chocolate Historian David Borghesani, receive courtship advice from General George Washington (portrayed by Carl Closs), learn about dating in the Colonial period from historical novel writer Susan Holloway Scott, delight in historical chocolate pairings, and more!
Tavern Talks is a monthly experience (not a lecture!) aimed exclusively for adults 21 and older that focuses on unexplored aspects of early American history and culture. Guests will experience history with hands-on activities, food and drink tastings, demonstrations, and more. Tavern Talks takes place at the Chadds Ford Historical Society’s Barns Brinton House, an historic 1714 tavern, located next to the Chaddsford Winery at 630 Baltimore Pike. Admission is $20 for non-members and $15 for members. Tickets must be purchased in advance over the phone, in person or online as space is limited. All attendees must be 21 and older.
