Event takes place November 4th in Everhart Park in West Chester
Following the success of the first Color 5K last year, the Chester County Commissioners, District Attorney, and members of the County’s Overdose Prevention Task Force announce details of the second annual Color 5K run and walk, raising funds to combat the opioid and heroin epidemic.
This year’s Color 5K will take place at Everhart Park in West Chester, on Saturday, November 4, 2017. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and the race starts at 9:00 a.m. For details of the event and to register, go to http://chesco.org/color5k.
Chester County remains committed to tackling the opioid and heroin epidemic through intensive health, education, treatment, and law enforcement measures, coordinated by the Overdose Prevention Task Force. The 2016 Color 5K attracted more than 800 participants and supporters, and raised $25,000 to help coordinate a “warm hand-off” program with the county’s five hospitals, helping to transition those who have been saved from an overdose into treatment and counseling.
Chester County Commissioners’ Chair Michelle Kichline said: “The amazing community support that we received for last year’s Color 5K proved that there are, unfortunately, many people in Chester County who have been affected by this epidemic. This event helps to raise awareness of, and funds for, the opioid and heroin crisis, but it also shows that those suffering from addiction, their families and friends are not alone.”
“The opioid and heroin crisis is a great concern plaguing the nation, and it’s a concern that we, as a county, have been cooperatively addressing for some time now,” said Commissioner Kathi Cozzone. “While in Chester County the number of those abusing opioids is less than other areas of the Commonwealth, we still need to provide education, counseling, and rehabilitation services to help our residents.”
Funds raised through this year’s Color 5K will benefit a new program to provide one-to-one support for overdose survivors and their families and friends; provide overdose prevention information and outreach to first responders, hospital staff, family members and friends; and importantly, provide expedited admission into detox and a review of all treatment options for overdose survivors who agree to treatment.
“Americans are the number one consumers of opioids and they are being abused by young and old, rich and poor, urban and rural,” added Commissioner Terence Farrell. “Prescription drug abuse has opened the door to heroin use, especially among young people, because heroin is cheaper and easier to obtain.”
Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said, “The hard truth of the matter is that heroin and opioids have decimated this generation of American youth. In Chester County, we lock up the dealers and the pill pushers. But we also understand the need for a comprehensive approach to this health care crisis, including drug court, naloxone in the hands of our first responders, and coordination of innovative strategies by our Overdose Prevention Task Force. We work together every day to save every life that we can.”
Set for November 4, 2017, Volunteers Needed
More than 600 trees will be planted at Middle Run Natural Area on November 4 by nearly 150 Delaware Nature Society volunteers. Since 1991, thousands of volunteers have helped to plant about 55,000 trees at this New Castle County park, which is located near Paper Mill and Possum Park roads in Newark. Tree planting begins at 9:00 am and is expected to go until 12:00 pm. County Executive, Matthew Meyer, will be attending the event at 10:00 am.
“Tree planting is just one facet of the biodiversity management project that we manage at Middle Run Valley Natural Area under contract with New Castle County,” says Jim White, Senior Fellow for land and biodiversity management for the Delaware Nature Society. “We are working to increase the park’s forest habitat as well as to increase stream buffers next to Middle Run, which is a tributary of White Clay Creek.”
The White Clay has been designated by the federal government as a “wild and scenic river,” which helps to preserve the quality and health of the waterway.
Increasing forest habitat provides food and shelter for a wide variety of native wildlife. Stream buffers slow down and filter pollutants and help to reduce erosion. Tree planting also has myriad other benefits, including making a positive impact on climate change.
At Middle Run, Delaware Nature Society has planted a variety of native deciduous hardwoods, including tulip tree, ash, sycamore and oak, in addition to such native shrubs as viburnum, serviceberry and chokeberry. All trees absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and ‘sequester’ or store the carbon in the trunks, branches and leaves. The rate at which they do it varies by species, soil type, climate, topography and other factors. Planting native trees in appropriate locations provides maximum benefit.
All of the trees that are planted are protected from deer damage with cages, and each volunteer is taught how to plant a tree properly to help ensure they grow to maturity. Another key component of success is ongoing maintenance of the trees. This can mean watering a newly transplanted tree during a dry spring or removing bittersweet or other invasive vines from a mature tree years after planting.
The Delaware Nature Society is still in need of volunteers for this year’s fall planting that takes place November 4th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. This year’s park location is at the intersection of Polly Drummond Hill Road and Smith Mill Rd. Look for the “tree planting” signs. Volunteers are asked to bring a shovel and a jug of water to water the first tree and to later use for refills. Individuals and families can show up that day; however, pre-registration is requested for all and is mandatory for large groups. Please contact Marie Graham at 302-239-2334 x111 or [email protected].

SHINE in the Vines Set for Saturday, Nov. 11, at Galer Estate Vineyard & Winery in Kennett Square
Fall event will benefit Chester County Hospital’s SHiNE program to support patients living with cancer in our community
: Cozy bonfires, great food and local wines set the atmosphere for this year’s SHINE in the Vines fundraising event at Galer Estate Vineyard and Winery in Kennett Square on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 3 to 7 p.m.
A new way to SHINE: This year’s event is laid back and open-house-style, rather than the formal gala held in years past. Casual, weather-appropriate attire is encouraged for this outdoor event for those 21 and older. Although the event theme has changed to a more relaxed feel, the goal remains the same: to raise money for Chester County Hospital’s SHINE program, a volunteer organization that provides vital services for patients of The Abramson Cancer Center at Chester County Hospital.
SHiNE assists patients living with cancer in Chester County and is dedicated to Lighting the way in cancer care, close to home. Proceeds from SHINE in the Vines will be used to directly benefit patients and their families by offsetting the costs of cancer care and support services offered by Abramson Cancer Center at Chester County Hospital. SHiNE is a completely volunteer based organization with medical supervision. Services provided are based on need and tailored to give every patient every advantage in their battle with cancer while maintaining an overhead of less than 2%. SHINE services include transportation to and from treatment, fitness and personal training memberships, workshops and support groups, a SHINE padfolio, a one-hour therapeutic massage with an oncology certified clinician, and a complimentary fitting and wig thanks to the generosity of participating salons.
Tickets may be purchased online or at the door and are $100 each. Sponsorships are still available and benefits include promotion and advertising, event tickets, and, at some levels, tickets for SHINE patients. Everyone attending will enjoy delicious wines and food from local food trucks, including Haute Wheels, Natalie’s Fine Food Truck, and The Tot Cart, s’mores by the fire, live music from MK&COL, and more. This year’s SHINE in the Vines will take place at Galer Estate Vineyard and Winery at 700 Folly Hill Rd. in Kennett Square.
For general information and tickets, contact Kate Pergolini at (610) 431-5054 or [email protected]. Those interested in sponsorships should contact Lauren Roscovich at (610) 431-5328 or [email protected]. There’s also still time to donate online.

People’s Light Continues its Trademark Holiday Tradition
with Aladdin: A Musical Panto
By Pete Pryor & Samantha Reading
Music & Lyrics by Michael Ogborn
Directed by Pete Pryor
November 15, 2017 – January 7, 2018
(Malvern, PA) People’s Light invites you to level up your holiday at our annual panto, now the Main Line’s favorite family celebration. This year, Aladdin: A Musical Panto, an adventure story infused with the adrenaline of video gaming, follows a young ne’er-do-well and his animal pals as they discover a mysterious lamp, rescue a princess, pilot a magic carpet, and save their village from an evil villain. Written by Samantha Reading and Pete Pryor, with music and lyrics by Michael Ogborn, Aladdin conquers the Leonard C. Haas Stage in Malvern from November 15, 2017-January 7, 2018. People’s Light is located at 39 Conestoga Road, Malvern, PA 19355. For tickets, call 610.644.3500 or visit peopleslight.org.
“We had so much fun letting this genie out of the bottle!” says director Pete Pryor. “This season’s Aladdin is sure to delight with new adventures, fresh faces, and those company stalwarts who have made our own brand of holiday hilarity a family tradition.”
“Families all over the area have made our annual panto their go-to holiday experience,” says Artistic Director Abigail Adams. “That inspires us to continue to connect these productions to people’s everyday interests.”
This year, it struck us how many features the panto shares with multi-player video gaming. Both offer intense, interactive experiences. Both immerse us in imagined worlds of high-energy adventure. Both invite us to care about the characters, and help them travel successfully toward their ultimate goals. And like gaming, the panto invites us to take a meaningful journey in community. We can share laughs and thrills and surprises with one another along the way.
Aladdin features panto veterans from the resident ensemble at People’s Light. Mark Lazar continues as the Theatre’s celebrated Dame, portraying Aladdin’s mother, the Widow Twankey. Susan McKey plays the Nurse, and Christopher Patrick Mullen appears as the scheming Fu. Tom Teti plays the Genius of the Ring.
They’re joined by returning guests and new talents. Frequent panto guest Kim Carson plays the Sultan. Camilo Estrada portrays Aladdin, and Samantha Funk appears as Princess Mai Tai. Zack Aguilar plays Morris the Mantis, and Peter Danelski is Manny the Monkey. Nicholas L. Parker plays the Genie of the Lamp. Melissa Barnathan, Mike Dorsey, and Emily Kaye Lynn play Fu’s three interns, while Adam Howard and Tori Lewis serve as swings, understudying all major roles in the production.
Co-author Pete Pryor directs. Co-author Samantha Reading assistant directs and choreographs. Thomas Fosnocht III serves as Music Director, aided by drummer Kanako Omae Neale. People’s Light’s Director of Design James F. Pyne, Jr. designs the set, and frequent guest Rosemarie McKelvey creates costumes. Company member Kate McSorley Fossner stage manages and Gina Pisasale dramaturgs.

Sarah Yeoman is an award-wining American watercolor artist and a signature member of the Philadelphia Water Color Society. Her work will be on display at Chester County Art Association's West Chester gallery through the month of November until December 7
Sarah describes her artistic process as “sculpting and pulling the form out of the paper,” much as a sculpture releases the form from the marble. Her imaginative and unusual perspective frames her work with the deepest ability to project how she sees the world, formed by shadow and light. Her mastery of watercolor deepens the story and intimacy of her work, as the resulting texture, color shifts, and granulation reveal the warm feeling of light as well as the whispers of light air. As she minimizes detail, the abstract shapes and surface of the paper reveal her deep connection with the process.
Sarah is represented by Abanakee Studios and Gallery 3040 in New York State, Gallery One in Chadds Ford Pennsylvania, and Sharp Art Gallery in Washington State.
