Andrew Wyeth’s Pennsylvania Portraits – A conversation
Aug 16 @ 18:00

We Hope You'll Join Us

Limited Tickets Remain

The Brandywine River Museum of Art would like to invite you to attend Andrew Wyeth's Pennsylvania Portraits, a fascinating conversation on the artist's approach to portraiture this Wednesday, August 16 at 6 p.m. The discussion is presented by Audrey Lewis, curator at the Brandywine River Museum of Art, and Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw, associate professor of American Art at the University of Pennsylvania, as a part of our exhibition Andrew Wyeth: In Retrospect.

Lewis will focus on local subjects including Karl and Anna Kuerner and Helga Testorf. Shaw will consider Wyeth's relationships with models from Chadds Ford's African-American community. Tickets are limited and going quickly for this in-depth look at the work of Andrew Wyeth who celebrated both Chadds Ford and its residents throughout his decades-long career.

The Museum will open at 5:30 p.m., with a reception after the lecture.

Andrew Wyeth: In Retrospect is an exhibition of over one hundred of the artist's finest paintings and works on paper selected from major museums and private collections. The exhibition brings together both well-known and rarely seen works created between the mid-1930s and Wyeth's death in 2009 that reveal the subjects that continually inspired Wyeth and the evolution of his imagery. This once in a lifetime exhibition will close on September 17, 2017 and is not one to miss!

Sixth Annual Cruise Night
Aug 18 @ 17:00 – 21:30

The Chester County Sheriff’s Office is revving up to host its Sixth Annual Cruise Night on Friday, Aug. 18, from 5 to 9:30 p.m. at West Chester University’s Farrell Stadium, and the public is invited to enjoy the festivities. Admission and parking are both free.

Organizers say they have no plans to shift into autopilot for this popular event because it continues to grow. Proceeds benefit the Chester County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit, which now includes 10 dogs and is financed primarily through private donations.

Chester County Chief Deputy Jason Suydam said the event creates multiple beneficiaries.  Car dealers and law-enforcement agencies get to showcase their vehicles, producing an impressive display the public can enjoy. Thirteen classes of vehicles, running the gamut from antiques and hot rods to state-of-the-art law-enforcement cruisers, will compete for cash prizes.

Chester County Sheriff Deputy Dan McCole and his K-9 partner, Nero, are among the beneficiaries of the Sixth Annual Cruise Night on Friday, Aug. 18, from 5 to 9:30 p.m.

“It’s a fun, family-oriented event,” Suydam said. “And we’re very appreciative of the support of the sponsors, businesses, community members, and law-enforcement partners who help make it happen. Some of the car dealers have been with us since the beginning.”

In addition to a high-octane array of horsepower, Cruise Night will feature a deejay, food vendors, door prizes, a 50-50 raffle, a dunk tank, and children’s activities, such as a moon bounce and face-painting.

One of the evening’s highlights will be the K-9 Thrill Show, which starts at 8 p.m. Attendees will get insight into why the unit’s K-9 teams each average about 100 calls a year for service, requests that range from helping to find a lost child to clearing a building after a bomb threat.

Lt. Harry McKinney, who heads the K-9 unit, said people are always surprised at how well-behaved the dogs are, compared with the service dogs of years ago. “I attribute that to the advancement of the training the unit has received,” he said.

Since 9-11, the demand for dogs has increased with heightened security needs, and they have also become a more versatile tool: finding people, drugs, and explosives as well as interacting with the public, sometimes in a therapeutic role, said McKinney.

“The ability to recognize the difference between a social situation and criminal apprehension requires a sophisticated level of training and dedication from both the handler and the K-9,” McKinney explained. He added that although the unit’s dogs enjoy meeting the public, citizens should never approach one without first receiving permission from the handler.

Chester County Sheriff Carolyn “Bunny” Welsh said she looks forward to Cruise Night, which helps to educate the community about the vital role the K-9 Unit fills in her office.

“This is an outstanding family event.  The great collection of cars is appreciated and enjoyed by everyone,” said Welsh. “It is really exciting to end the night with this spectacular K-9 thrill show. Cars, lights, sirens, dogs: It is a real crowd-pleaser!”

Media coverage is welcome. Farrell Stadium is located at 855 South New Street in West Chester.

Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling comes to Kennett Flash
Aug 19 @ 19:30

JACKIE “THE JOKE MAN” MARTLING COMES TO THE KENNETT FLASH

The Kennett Flash is proud to present a two-show evening with a legend of radio, television and the stage; a true master of comedy: Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling, on Saturday August 19th at 7:30pm and 10pm.  “The Joke Man” will bring his infamous comedic act to the intimate Kennett Flash, and is sure to deliver and unforgettable night of laughs.  Limited tickets remain for the early show, so a second show was added by popular demand.

Jackie Martling was born and raised in East Norwich, a tiny hamlet on the North Shore of Long Island. He graduated in 1966 from Oyster Bay High School and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1971.  In March 1979, to promote the fledgling Long Island comedy scene and the stand-up shows he was producing, he created a joke hot line, "Use Your Finger! Dial (516) 922-WINE!," which has been in uninterrupted operation ever since.

In 1982, after founding "Governor's Comedy Shop" in Levittown on Long Island and touring as a national headliner, on a suggestion from a Washington DC comedy club owner, he blindly sent his three self-produced LP’s to Howard Stern upon Howard’s arrival at WNBC-AM in New York City. Howard called him to make a guest appearance on his radio show. In 1986, Jackie became a full-time cast member and the head writer of Stern’s radio and TV shows, and as they say, the rest is history. For eighteen years (1983-2001) Martling was a fixture of radio & television's Howard Stern Show.
Jackie still works all around the country performing his solo act of rapid-fire filthy jokes and the classic finale, “Stump The Joke Man,” and guests on many of the top national radio shows and podcasts. Remaining ever current with comedy, he tweets a joke every day at 4:20pm on his twitter account.

Jackie Martling will release his autobiography: The Joke Man: Bow To Stern, in October of this year.  A member of the notorious Friar’s Club, Martling’s acerbic brand of blue comedy is sure to fill The Kennett Flash with raucous laughter.

Opening for Martling is Rich Harkaway.  Harkaway has been in the Comedy business for 30 years with a long break in the middle to become a urologic surgeon. His relaxed brand of dark humor makes him a fan favorite wherever he goes and he has shared the stage with David Brenner, Kevin Hart, and Jim Gaffigan.

Celebrate Helicopter Day
Aug 20 @ 12:00 – 16:00

The public is invited to join the American Helicopter Museum and Education Center (AHMEC) to celebrate World Helicopter Day on August 20, 2017, from noon until 4 p.m. World Helicopter Day aims to raise awareness of helicopters’ contributions to society and celebrate the diversity of people who design, fly and support them.

Every day, thousands of people rely on helicopters for rescue, disaster relief, transport, firefighting, medical transfers, power line maintenance, tourism, agriculture and many other roles. Few people get to see helicopters up close or have the opportunity to talk to the people who work with them.

“I’m thrilled that AHMEC is taking part in World Helicopter Day,” said World Helicopter Day organizer Mick Cullen. Organizations in Australia, Canada, Europe, Hong Kong and South Africa will host events the same day. “If you have any interest in helicopters, the people who work with them or a career in aviation, please go along to your local event. You can also see more details on the World Helicopter Day website at www.worldhelicopterday.com or follow it on different social media platforms using the hashtag #worldhelicopterday, which will link activity around the globe.

Admission at AHMEC is $10.00 for adults and $8.00 for children, students and seniors. Helicopter rides beginning at 1 p.m. cost an additional $60.00 per person. Vendors include Crowded Castle Brewing Company, Kona Ice of King of Prussia, New Castle County Police, DogsHome Rescue and Petey Possum’s Hangout.

Contact AHMEC at 610-436-9600 or see the website at www.americanhelicopter.museum for more information.

The American Helicopter Museum and Education Center, located in the land of industry innovators in the Philadelphia region, is the nation’s premier aviation museum devoted exclusively to helicopters. Established in 1996, the nonprofit organization collects, restores and displays rotary-wing aircraft, including over 35 civilian and military helicopters, autogiros and convertiplanes.

Blood Donation at the Gables
Aug 21 @ 14:00 – 19:00

Every unit we donate at our blood drive can help save up to three lives. Each recipient of that blood donation has his or her own story. He or she could be an accident or trauma victim, cancer patient, a mother giving birth, a premature baby, a transplant recipient or surgical candidate. Our impact goes beyond that patient – it is multiplied by the impact it has on that person’s loved ones who are thankful for the unit we donated.

The American Red Cross could not meet patient needs and touch all of those lives if it were not for organizations like ours. We are proud to support our community, our country and be a part of the impact that the Red Cross makes every day.

Our upcoming blood drive collection goal on August 21st is 60 donors. Think about all of the lives we can touch by signing up to donate. A typical donation takes less than one hour, and we are proud to make that available to you in your neighborhood! Make your appointment today by visiting the Red Cross website, or by calling The Gables at Chadds Ford and asking for Nicole. If you can’t give, you can still make an impact by volunteering to support the drives and encouraging others to give using your social media channels and network.

Remember that every blood donation has a story attached to it. The story of why we donated; each volunteer’s story of why they helped; the story of why we hosted the blood drives and the recipient’s story when they receive a generous donation. Consider making your personal story part of the collective stories!

We are holding our blood drive in honor of Timothy "Timmy" Gaige. Timothy recently passed away from complications of b cell lymphoma. He is survived by his wife MaryBeth Saunders Gaige and three beautiful children. He put up a valiant fight, but unfortunately, he lost the battle. His treatment included many blood products, most of which came from anonymous donors, which would not be possible without donations at drives like this! Read more about Tim's journey on his CaringBridge page.

We look forward to your participation and seeing you there!

Best wishes to you, and thank you for making The Gables at Chadds Ford what it is. Let’s make an impact in our community on August 21st and add that to our list of great accomplishments.

International Justice Mission
Aug 24 @ 11:00 – 12:00

You are invited to a Brunch and Learn session with International Justice Mission, a global organization that advocates for the rights of the poor, including investigating and prosecuting human trafficking, fighting against police corruption, and working with local government to create and implement just legislation.

Thanks to guest donations in 2016, Salon Secrets Spa helped raise $2000 in contributions to fight human trafficking through Dressember, and these funds benefited IJM in part.

We are excited to welcome Alesha Guruswamy Rusk, who serves as the Senior Program Manager for IJM in South Asia. In her role, Ms. Rusk works closely with IJM's field offices in South Asia, which focus on combating sex trafficking and forced labor. She collaborates with field office staff in the design of new programs and in ensuring that IJM's work is as strategic and effective as possible, so that the justice systems will begin working on their own to protect and serve the poor. We are looking forward to the opportunity to learn more about IJM and the impact that the organization has around the world.

JOIN US on Thursday, August 24, from 11am - 12pm at Salon Secrets Spa
