Bayard Taylor Home & Garden Tour
Jun 3 @ 10:00 – 16:00

2017 Bayard Taylor Home & Garden Tour

Saturday, June 3, 10 AM to 4PM

The ever-popular Bayard Taylor Home & Garden Tour, benefiting the library’s Children’s Programs and Adult Literacy, will be held on Saturday, June 3, from 10 to 4.  This year’s tour, “It’s All About the View,” will explore the Unionville area known for its horse farms, equestrian sports and stunning views of the rolling hills of Chester County.

Among houses on this year’s tour are two ‘sister houses’ of Nancy Penn Smith Hannum and Averell Penn Smith Walker. For 58 years, Mrs. Hannum served as the Master of Mr.Stewart’s Cheshire Foxhounds. Both houses are still owned by family members and are full of memorabilia of the Hunt. At another location visitors can visit the Unionville Academy, once attended by Kennett Library namesake, Bayard Taylor.

Other historic homes open for viewing have been updated to accommodate modern lifestyles while retaining an English countryside feel. Tour goers will see some amazing architecture, home décor and artwork.

Visitors will also be able to sample food and beverages from local restaurants and merchants.  In addition, local plein air artists will be painting in some of the gardens.

  • Tickets for the tour are $40 and may be purchased beginning May 1
    • Online at www.kennettpubliclibrary.org

  • 4:00 Doug Gwyn will speak on The Quaker View of the Christian Revelation.
  • 5:00 Brief Meeting for Worship
  • 5:10 Break and fellowship
  • 5:30 Dinner
  • 7:00 Public Meeting for Worship
Marlborough Monthly Meeting
361 Marlborough Rd
Kennett Square, PA 19348

Public Meeting

The Public Meeting will be a silent  (unprogrammed) Quaker Meeting for Worship. We will wait in the silence for the presence of the Holy Spirit. There will be no sermon, but there may be Ministry. This Ministry occurs when someone, receiving a message from the Holy Spirit, stands and speaks the message out loud.  It is spontaneous, not planned in advance.

This Public Meeting differs slightly from most Meetings for Worship in that we have invited a number of individuals who are known as Recorded Ministers. These are not Ministers as one might find in other denominations. Rather, they are Quakers who have been recognized by their community as having a Gift of Ministry. That is, they are known for effectively receiving and speaking messages in a Meeting for Worship. They may sit on the “facing benches” but this is not a reflection of greater importance. It simply addresses a practical matter of allowing their messages to be better heard.

There is no guarantee that any of the Ministers will speak. In fact, the Holy Spirit can anoint anyone. All participants in a Meeting for Worship, whether longtime Quakers or first-time-attenders, must listen closely for the Still Small Voice. Anyone hearing this voice has a responsibility to stand and speak the words they have been given.

Doug Gwyn

Doug Gwyn grew up in the pastoral stream of Friends in Indiana. After experiencing a call to ministry in 1968, he attended Union Theological Seminary in New York City, where he began to know unprogrammed Friends better. His training in biblical studies has informed his research and writing on early Friends and on current issues among Friends today. Doug has coined the term “bispiritual” to describe Friends like himself who are engaged and nurtured by both pastoral and unprogrammed Friends, in different ways.  After serving as a Friends pastor in Maine, Doug is currently a Friend in Residence at Pendle Hill..

Friends Folk Club Presents Jen Chapin
Jun 3 @ 19:30

The Friends Folk Club is proud to announce a return performance by singer Jen Chapin, on Saturday, June 3rd at 7:30 pm

Jen Chapin's music is urban folk soul -- story songs that search for community and shared meaning, powered by the funk and improvisation of the city. Critics have hailed her work as "brilliant.. soulfully poetic" (NPR), "thoughtful.. worth-savoring" (People), "addictive" (Boston Globe), "smart, observant, lyrically deft, politically aware and emotionally intuitive" (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel). JazzTimes has called her "a first-rate storyteller" while Relix regards her as "one of the freshest voices singing today." Not at all surprising from the daughter of Harry Chapin, a master musical storyteller. Jen has been featured on “Late Nite with Conan O’Brien”, NPR’s Mountain Stage and WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour, Sirius Satellite’s The Loft with Mike Marrone and Mary Sue Twohy’s The Village, been honored by the USA Songwriting Competition, has performed on stage with Bruce Springsteen, and has opened up for Bruce Hornsby, Smokey Robinson, and the Neville Brothers.

Vietnam Huey Helicopter at Fatherfest
Jun 17 @ 10:00 – 15:00

Take Me Home Huey is a one-of-a-kind sculptural art installation by artist Steve Maloney that was once a U.S. Army helicopter medevac shot down in Vietnam during a medical rescue in 1969, and later scrapped. Its transformation from boneyard heap to restored glory serves as a mixed-media educational tool with music, an exhibition and a documentary film.

The American Helicopter Museum and Education Center (AHMEC) is proud to host this exceptional exhibit as part of its upcoming annual FatherFest. Working in conjunction with Dave Barron of Light Horse Legacy, Inc., which partnered with Maloney to create the sculpture, AHMEC will offer photo and interview opportunities with the original crew of Huey #174 as it was known during its service, as well as with Barron.

“Wander past the exhibit to feel the emotion it encompasses,” said Barron. “Listen to Veterans speak of things that haven’t come out in decades. Meet the brave men who lived the motto, ‘So that others may live.’ See the film (and) listen to the song. Let me invite you to watch something truly amazing as art heals. You won’t walk away the same.”

Saturday, 6/17:

Exhibit open all day; admission free for Veterans w/ID

10 am – Introduction/Welcome the Crew of Huey #174

11 am – Pinning ceremony for Vietnam Veterans

11:30 am – Take Me Home Huey film screening in theatre
