The MLK CommUNITY Food Drive
Mar 20 @ 09:00 – 17:00

MLK CommUNITY Food Drive March 20th – March 31st

Donations Are Critical

The MLK CommUNITY of the Greater Kennett Area kicks off their Food Drive starting March 20th and it runs until March 31st.  Historically, the food drive was organized on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Day of Sharing, however, this year it will be conducted later. “We are excited to continue the vision to create a beloved community in the Greater Southern Chester County area that provides opportunities for the eradication of poverty and the food drive is one initiative our Board has been coordinating,” says Carol Black, Board President.  “It is wonderful to honor Dr. King’s legacy throughout the year, not just on one day but also during the time to commemorate the March from Selma”, says Black.  The food drive benefits the Kennett Area Community Service (KACS’s Food Cupboard) as well as The Bridge Food and Clothing Ministry in West Grove.

“Today more than ever is it incredibly important for our community to support a food drive”, says Melanie Weiler, KACS Executive Director.   “Our supply is low, we anticipate cuts in funding, and we need to prepare.  We can’t thank our community enough”, says Weiler.

MLK food collectionFood items that are in the most demand include but not limited to: canned vegetables and low sugar fruit, tomato sauce, fresh produce, rice, pasta, oatmeal, dried beans, tuna, and peanut butter.  “We encourage food drives to be conducted by churches, neighborhoods, businesses, service clubs, schools, scouts, sports teams, etc. during this week”, says Ginny Levy, Chair of the MLK Food Drive Committee. “Have fun, make it competitive, get creative, anything you can do to spark the interest and get collecting”, say Levy.

Once items are collected, you can conveniently drop off your donations directly to the KACS Food Cupboard any day between Monday – Friday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.  Special volunteers will be at KACS on Friday, March 31st from 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm and then on Saturday, April 1st from 8:00 am – Noon.  Please visit KACS website for location information at: www.kacsonline.net

Additional information such as materials you can use for your drives including flyers, posters, tips on conducting a food drive in your community as well as information about the organization and volunteer opportunities, may be found on the MLK CommUNITY of Greater Kennett Square’s website: www.mlkcommunity.org or email them at [email protected].   And, follow them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Mlkcommunity.

About MLK CommUNITY:  For many years has been a non-profit service organization with a vision to create a beloved community in the Greater Southern Chester County that provides opportunities for fellowship, service, justice, and the eradication of poverty. MLK CommUNITY is a tax exempt, charitable organization as described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Crebilly Farms: Second Conditional Use Hearing.
Mar 29 @ 18:00 – 22:00

Wednesday, March 29th, 6-10PM Rustin High School will be the second Conditional Use hearing.

1100 Shiloh Rd, West Chester, PA 19382

Westtown Township Link

Below was submitted by Mindy Rhodes

Here is the link to a printable flyer with additional dates I encourage you to share with others:  https://crebillyfarmfriends.files.wordpress.com/2017/03/crebilly-march.pdf

Party Status will be determined for a number of groups and then testimony continues.  I had a dream last night only five people came to the hearing and the auditorium was empty with the exception of a full stage that included the BOS and Toll Brothers.  There are 850 seats in Rustin Auditorium.  Please do what you can to attend any part of the hearing.  Every bit helps... and don't forget to bring water:)

Last evening, Dr. Scanlon, Superintendent of the West Chester Area School District, issued a letter to the community that included a resolution from WCASD and the impact the Crebilly development by Toll will have on the schools in the district:

Dear Community Members,

The West Chester Area School District has passed a resolution at its March 27 board meeting to allow the Superintendent to request an annual impact fee of $645,000 from Toll Brothers developers for the added expenses the district will incur from the proposed Crebilly Farms housing development.

Crebilly Resolution.docx - REVISED 3-21-17.pdf

Currently Toll Brothers is seeking approval from Westtown Township to build more than 300 homes on the Crebilly Farms tract of land at the corner of Routes 202 and 926. Working with an experienced demographer, we have determined that this development will generate at least 172 students who would attend our school district. (This estimate already excludes the number of students we believe would attend private schools, based on our previous experience.)

It is common practice for school districts to request impact fees from developers when a large development is proposed. Simply put, a public school district cannot fairly shoulder the entire cost of a huge surge of students at one time. We will need to find additional space in our schools with modular units or additions, we will need to hire additional teachers and other staff, and we will need to provide additional transportation. (In addition, we are bound by law to also provide transportation for any students who choose private schools located within 10 miles of our borders.).  We anticipate approximately 56 private and/or parochial school students from this proposed development.

Final approval of this development rests with Westtown Township. We consider it our duty to keep you informed as this matter relates to our school district. Public hearings are continuing, and we welcome your voice in this matter.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jim Scanlon, Superintendent

CFHS – The Battle of Brandywine, Mike Harris
Mar 29 @ 19:00 – 20:00

The Chadds Ford Historical Society’s 2017 Spring Lecture Series commemorates the 240th anniversary of the Philadelphia Campaign of 1777. This year the series will be covering some fascinating topics that span the entire 1777 campaign:

Wednesday, March 29, 7:00 p.m.

The Battle of Brandywine, Mike Harris

Mike Harris, author of Brandywine: A Military History of the Battle that Lost Philadelphia but Saved America, September 11, 1777, will discuss the Revolution's longest single day battle that engaged more troops than any other. Mike will also be selling and signing copies of his book at the lecture.

Thursday, April 6, 7:00 p.m.

Remember Paoli!, Jim Christ

The Battle of Paoli, also called “The Paoli Massacre,” unfolded at midnight on September 20 to 21, 1777. After General George Washington’s defeat at Brandywine on September 11th, his forces retreated toward Philadelphia to regroup, and he ordered General Anthony Wayne to harass the British. But the attempt failed, and the result was the 9th deadliest battle in the American Revolutionary War. Jim Christ is the vice-president of the Paoli Battlefield Preservation Fund.

Wednesday, April 12, 7:00 p.m.

Present But Not Accounted For: Women at the 1777-1778 Valley Forge Encampment, Dr. Nancy Loane

Over 400 women camped at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78. Dr. Loane's presentation will introduce you to the women who traveled with the Continental Army, those with Washington’s military family, and the wives of the officers, such as Martha Washington, Lucy Knox, and Catharine Greene. Through the women at camp, you’ll discover a Valley Forge encampment that you never knew existed.

Admission to the lectures is free for all CFHS members and $5 for non-members. All tickets are at the door; no advance ticketing is available. The 2017 Spring Lectures Series is held in the CFHS Barn Visitors Center at 1736 Creek Road (Rt. 100), Chadds Ford, PA 19317. For more information please visit our website www.chaddsfordhistory.org.
